Uruguay vs Romania - Game of the week - RWC 2011 spot on the line

I agree that rugby will benefit tremendously from Argentina entering the 3N. No question about this. it is going to be absolutely huge. As a rugby player, coach and massive fan in Brazil I am extremely happy about it. Brazil, though, has the msot potential of anyone to join Argentina at the top table. There are 30% more players per year and more clubs than either Chile or Uruguay.

Anyow I predict Uruguay to get a 1 point win in the cold in Bucharest and advance to New Zealand 2011. Here is my match preview: http://rugbyworldcup-argentina2023.blogspot.com/2010/11/romania-vs-uruguay-preview.html

Not sure that I agree that this is the only international match that matters this week ... I think they all matter to varying degrees ... anyhow, about this match - I really think that Uruguay might have blown their chances of qualifying for the 2011 RWC by not winning at home. It sounds like it's going to be cold and wet, which suits a forward dominated game, and if you combine this with home ground advantage, Romania should win this.

You honestly think Uruguay can beat Romania in Bucharest ? and USA beat Georgia in Tbilisi ? I think you are underestimating ENC teams

Honestly, I think it could go either way. Uruguay can certainly win and have been playing far more positive rugby this year than they previously have. Romania will keep it tight and be happy to kick for the corners. It is what has always worked for them. But since I live in South America I will take a risk and say

The USA should win, they have a worldclass back three that should break the line. Georgia will totally control the frontrow though and be great in general in the backrow and secondrow but the USA have some great players in these areas too. Todd Clever will play 8 rather than 7. Louis Stanfill at 6 is for me maybe the most underrated player on the planet. He would make many test sides such as Argentina, Ireland, Italy, Samoa or Scotland. Hayden Smith is great in the secondrow too. I pick a USA win but in a close match - by 5 points.

Sorry, if it reads with disrepect. I have nothing but utter respect for Georgia, Romania, Russia, Portugal and the ENC as a whole. I wish South America had the same tournament!

The only match to see a team qualify for the Rugby World Cup. Thats all I meant. Of course all games are important. Ireland vs Argentina is very important for me personally. All matches are very important. Rugby has no friendlies.

I call bullshit.

You would

Yep, well sorry for not being unbelievably biased towards the minnows. A guy who plies his trade for a very average Italian club is being compared to the likes of Nathan Hines, John Barclay and Stpehen Ferris and it's a bit ridiculous. If the guy was that good he would have been picked up by either Aironi or Treviso for their franchises surely? Same goes for Inaki Basauri. Todd Cleaver was ok for one of the worst teams in Super 14 history and is now off playing in Japan. Hardly what I'd call a 'world class' back three.

Maybe it's just me but I reckon they'd be destroyed by the likes of McCaw, Kaino and Reid. That's the standard for world class.

Louis Stanfill got offered the contract while he was playing in Australia for a Canberra club and was having some issues with the management and took it. Between you and me this is what happened. I have it on a 100% reliable source. Stanfill had attracted scouts from Australian Super Rugby sides. He could certainly play elsewhere and will do so. Aironi and Treviso could sign him but I don´t know if they will because they are so driven to sign Italians or Italian elligible players. They already have enough imports. But, Stanfill will be a name people will hear a lot more of.

Clever is outstanding. better than David Wallace and a lot younger. As good a player as John Barclay. I am not saying so because he is from a minnow country. The USA aint no minnow btw. Been to all but one RWC. I would think minnow, these days, are teams outside the top 20? But call it as you will.

Iñaki Basauri is a player I need to see a lot more of. I am interested in how he goes today vs Georgia.

The USA are superb in the backrow and the backthree but have problems gallore in the front row. They always have. The positive is that there are some great players in other positions. Hayden Smith in the secondrow is a good player. He plays for Saracens. While Emerick and Seta are both decent outside centres. They will be much stronger vs Ireland in New Zealand 2011 than they were in RWC 1999.

The thing to remember is there are many elite players from countries further down the ladder. One of the worlds best secondrowers is Canadian - Jamie Cudmore (Clermont). One of the best backrowers is from Namibia - Jacques Burger (Saracens). One of the best wingers is from the USA - Taku Ngwenya (Biarritz). The difference is having elite players and having a complete team.

10th minute Romania score a try and convert it 7-0

12th minute Dangerous break by Romania leads to a scrum and eventually a penalty try after Uruguayan Scrum half makes a silly decision 14-0. Bad start for South Americans. small arena in Bucharest is full of people. Romanians are enjoying the game.

23rd minute Romanian scrum 5 meters from Uruguay touch line.Uruguay number 14 sin bined. Romanian scrum overwhelms the opposition third try for Romania conversion is good. 21-0

24-29 minutes Uruguay finally get possession but cant get far past the halfway line

31st minute Oaks attack dangerously. number 12 comes close to scoring another try but well played by Uruguayan defender stops him inches away from touch line

32-35 minutes nothing interesting the ball is in the middle. Uruguayan scrum is no match for the opposition that is where most of the troubles come from for South Americans

35-40 Uruguayans are trying hard to break Romanian lines but Oaks are well organized and more powerful.

41 first half ends 21-0

Second half

45' five minutes gone after the start of second half Uruguay desperately trying to make their attacks count. good luck to them I'm switching over to Portugal vs Canada much more interesting game
17-20 in favor of Canada right now

56' Uruguay finally break through nice try by number 13. 24-7

66' Try not converted by Romania 29-7

72' Uruguay giving all they have left try not converted 29-12

73' Romania respond with another converted try 36-12

80' Romania score free kick and Romanians are celebrating they join Argentina, England, Scotland and the arch rivals Georgia on the rugby world cup.... Congratulations. final score 39-12

And the 1,668,870,408 people that use the internet globally.

Congratulations to Romania I thought the final score would be closer but the result does not surpirise me, get ready for a pack driven pool in the group, with England, Argentina, Scotland, Georgia and Romania.

Too bad. I would have loved to see Uruguay-Argentina in a world cup... Good job Romania! My driving instructor will be delighted (He's Romanian haha)

I knew Romania would win, and I was on the stadium. The difference is harsher than I expected, but the Romanian forwards overwhelmed their opponents even without the rain. Uruguay has shown determination and a good ball game, but it wasn't enough, it is hard to win when you lose most scrums and lineouts, but their effort is to be appreciated. Good luck to them for the next RWC qualifiers.

Hai Romania!

My post was referring to the irony of the "between you and me" line, I have no doubt that you're right lol... Sorry for the misunderstanding!

Congrats on the kid Melhor....

Fair play Romania. Went in as favourites but after a disappointing ERC campaign they did well to recover.

Thanks so much.

Truth be told Romania only ever got into the Rugby World Cup Playoff Final based on their own silly ideas. For the first half of their qualifying matches they refused to select players based outside of Romania. In the first of the ENC (the 2009 games) they therefore were far from full strength and it told. Their results were home losses to Portugal and Russia, an away los to Georgia and wins but not by too much vs Germany and Spain.

Spain 10-19 Romania
Germany 0â€"22 Romania
Romania 19-28 Russia
Georgia 28-23 Romania
Romania 21â€"22 Portugal

It changed in 2010 with the French based players flocking back into the team. They defeated Georgia, who rested players, and crucially Portugal. This meant they finished third in the ENC and advanced as Europe 3, after defeating Ukraine, to face Africa 2 - Tunisia and then Uruguay. They were far betterthis time around vs Germany and Spain.

Romania 67-5 Germany
Russia 21-21 Romania
Romania 22-10 Georgia
Portugal 9â€"20 Romania
Romania 48-3 Spain

A lesson learned - don´t be like Wales and think second string teams are as good as the first choice.
