Uruguay´s national rugby side, Los Teros will play against European power, Romania this coming saturday (november 13) at the home of Uruguayan rugby, Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo. The Estadio Charrúa regularly receives strong crowds for Uruguay´s international matches and this weekends clash should be no exception. The URU has been promotting the clash at the Centro de Eventos del Portones Shopping in Montevideo. Tickets are on sale for UR$100 for adults and entry for those under 15 is free. A crowd of 12,000 should attend the match.

The match is the most important rugby match anywhere in the world this month with the winner of the two match series to claim the twentieth and final place at Rugby World Cup 2011. The first match is crucial as the winner will have an advantage in the second match because it is the overall winner on aggregate who will qualify for New Zealand 2011. In qualification for France 2007 Uruguay lost the first match 12-5 to Portugal in Lisbon but won the second 18-12 in Montevideo. The aggregate result meant Portugal won 24-23 and qualified for its first ever Rugby World Cup. This time around, Uruguay will host the first match and are well aware of the consequences of failing to not only win but to win well.

Uruguay got this far by defeating Asia 1 - Kazakhstan at the same venue in July. Romania defeated Africa 2 - Tunisia in the other qualifyer. The matches were similar with the winners both outplaying their opponents to comfortably get through to the Rugby World Cup Final Place Play-Off. Unlike Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania, South America is not awared a direct place at Rugby World Cups. Hence, Uruguay despite being the top placed South American qualifier had to then face off against North America 2 - the USA and because they were defeated they had to play Kazakhstan and now Romania.

It will be only the third ever clash between the two countries and the first ever in Uruguay. In the previous two meetings Romania won both. The first was in 2008 with the europeans winning 10-6 and the second in 2009 with Romania winning 17-11. The margins of 4 and 6 points suggest that neither side should be considered superior to the other especially considering that both matches were played in Bucharest. Romania have competed at every Rugby World Cup too date but were unable to directly qualify for New Zealand 2011 after finishing third behind Georgia and Russia in the European phase of qualification. Sadly, Uruguay will be without its best player - secondrower / backrower Rodrigo Capo Ortega of Castres in the Top 14, who because of differences with the URU wishes to not represent his country.

Thanks for starting this thread Melhor, I'm excited for this match, I think Los Teros need a decent size win at home if they are to advance to the RWC and playing in front of 12,000 in Montevideo might just help them at home they are a minnow with some passion. I feel the Oaks are just too strong though and if Uruguay don't build up a comfortable aggregate the away leg will be tough. I think that Romania will do better in 2011 if they make it then Uruguay just because that pool is so pack heavy. Is there any word on the availability of the Romanian professionals for the game this weekend?

No word on the team itself yet but all professional players in France, England and Italy will be avaliable for selection. Interestingly, Romania refused to select playing playing outside Romania in 2008 and this led to poor results vs Georgia, Portugal and Russia. From what I have read, Romania aer packing their team with French based players. Two from the Top 14 in Perpignan´s duo of Tonita and Tincu and five from the Pro d2 and a few from the third division (Féderale 1). All are forwards! In the backs three are to be from France - one from each of the second, third and fourth divisions and all others from Romania. Nobody from Italy or England in the squad, if what I am going off is reliable.

I agree with your comments - Uruguay must not only win but socre as many points as they can. There is no second chance but Romania are not looking so flash. For France 2007 they had more professional players than today and importantly more in the backs. Vs Uruguay the way to score tries is decent centres and wingers. Russia showed this in the Churchill Cup. Going off the Oaks´s squad they are going to battle it out up front, meaning they are playing into Uruguays hands.

I am just bummed about the ongoing conflicts between the Carrasco club and the URU which means no players from the club are playing for Los Teros any more. At Rugby World Cup 2003, 12 players from the club were in the Uruguay squad. his has boiled over to the extent that captain, Rodrigo Capo Ortega no longer plays for the team. He is a world class player. Its unthinkable but true that a player from Uruguay could have a contract with a top French club in the Top 14 from 2002-2013. I really hope Los Teros can qualify. I want a repeat of Georgia vs Uruguay from Australia 2003!

I think Pablo Lemoine is still playing professionally in France albeit at a lower level and his age should limit his action to a half or maybe an hour. A couple of Uruguay players impressed me at the Churchill Cup their Scrum half had some creativity and energy and I think it was Martinez on the wing that did allright. Canada took a while to get ahead of Uruguay this summer at churchill cup until they started tireing out them out on the wings, like you spotted also with the Russians.

Romania needs some talented backs desperately they have always had a strong group in front, but it forces them to play 1980's style rugby, the pick and roll, the maul, scrums and lineouts are their only places to launch attacks. I am hoping this first leg is competive which I think it should be so we have an exciting return leg in two weeks.

My prediction: Uruguay to win by 3 points.

I am really looking forward to this match. Its a 2000KM drive for me but would you believe I have to work on Saturday morning meaning no road trip!

Check out the team lineups and more in my match preview - http://rugbyworldcup-argentina2023....uguay-vs-romania-rugby-world-cup-2011_12.html

Did you know that since Uruguay first played at a Rugby World Cup - in 1999 there has been an increase of over 130% of players in the country. Obviously securing their place at New Zealand 2011 would further encourage this. Vamos Los Teros!

Little Guy

Yes, Pablo Lemoine plays in France´s third division - Federale 1 for Valence d'Agen. Other Uruguayan pro players in France include Mario Sagrario, Juan Carlos Bado, Nicolas Brignoni and the great Rodrigo Capó Ortega.

Sebastian Levaggi plays in Italy for Venice.

Uruguay 21-21 Romania

http://rugbyworldcup-argentina2023.blogspot.com/2010/11/uruguay-21-21-romania.html

Yesterday afternoon Uruguay hosted Romania in the first of two matches to determine who will join the 19 other countries as the final participant at Rugby World Cup 2011. Montevideo put on fine weather and the fans flocked into Estadio Charrúa to see the biggest match for Los Teros since 2007. With the overall winner on aggregate going through to New Zealand 2011 to join Argentina, England, Georgia and Scotland in Pool B it was simply a must win for both teams. Yet after 80 minutes the scores were tied at 21 all and now the teams have two to prepare for the winner take all rematch at the stadionul National Arcul de Triumf in Bucharest, Romania.

The match could perhaps best summed up as a game between two teams with two theories - oldschool rugby and postmodernist rugby. Romania used their forwards endlessly and it did work. They scored tries following extended periods of battering the Los Teros try line. Uruguay, in contrast, continued to play what has been a revolutionary style of rugby for Uruguay - the running rugby introduced by Teros coach and former Pumas winger Gonzalo Camardón. Despite not having the best players all playing, Camardón has transformed what previously was a team playing damage prevention rugby to one scoring impressive tries. As documented here on Rugby World Cup - Argentina 2023 an ongoing dispute between the URU and 2008 Uruguayan champions, Carrasco Polo has complicated matters dramatically for Los Teros with players boycotting selection for Los Teros. The greatest player the country has ever produced, Rodrigo Capó Ortega left the club over eight years ago but also remains out of the Uruguayan team due to the feud. In his place the most experienced player is backrower, Nicolás Brignoni who after only seven minutes of the first half vs Romania had to leave injured.

Romanian flyhalf Dan Dumbrava had a good match and had the Oaks leading 9-0 in the first half following forward domination from the visitors. It would be Los Teros, however, who scored the first try - a beautiful try to wing Ignacio Mieres who entered the line from the blindside in a set move and linked with fellow Teros wing Leandro Leivas and then received a return pass to score. Romania responded with phases of pick and go from the forwards as they camped on Los Teros try line. Backrower Alexandru Manta scored to give Romania a 14-5 half time lead.

Los Teros flyhalf Matías Arocena slotted two penalties early in the second half to cut the lead to three points before Romania scored their second try which again was on the back of foward power as prop Bogdan Balan scored a try near the touchline. With Dumbrava´s conversion the Oaks were out to a 10 point lead. Uruguay responded with smart play from scrumhalf Manuel Martínez giving the ball width which resulted in Leivas scoring a try in the far corner. With Arocena's conversion, the lead was cut to three and after more attacking play the hosts were awarded a penalty which Arocena slotted to leve the scores at 21-21. Romania had the chance to win late in the game but failed to do so.

Uruguay had a strong crowd of over 10,000 supporters. The IRB must be called upon to ensure Uruguay recieve more games like this. Today´s match marked the first European side to visit since France 2007. The likes of Canada, Fiji, Georgia, Japan, Portugal, Russia, Samoa, Spain, Tonga and the USA should all visit Uruguay between now and Rugby World Cup 2015 and should do so in tours which include tests against the lieks of Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay. South America s Today´s match is a further indication that the region merits an automatic qualifier. Every other region have one or more automatic qualifier.

The possibilities of Uruguayan rugby are bigger than some might think. With Argentina joining the big 3 to compete in the new Four Nations competition from 2012 onwards gives them the chance to develop into an even bigger force in world rugby. If Uruguay can go through the same transformation Argentina went through they can surely become a massive surprise in the 2015 World Cup

I want Uruguay to qualify for this world cup... because I want us to beat the team other than Romania and We want revenge for 2003 oh yes we haven't forgotten that cursed day where 9 of our players missed the game because of injuries... anyway best of luck to Uruguay its going to be tough in Bucharest, but its not impossible..

Latest news from Bucharest are that the game is sold-out and the weather forecast predicts rain at the time of the game.

Otherwise, I'm confident that Romania will qualify for the World Cup. And Toko, Georgia has beaten Romanian experimental sides time and time again, but winning against our 1st team at the RWC will not be easy for you.

Great game last week, Los Teros showed great resilience in coming back to earn a draw, I think that it will not be enough though as I said before I think they needed a modest win at home by at least a converted try. Under rainy conditions and at home I say with their superior forwards that the Oaks pick up a five to ten point victory, I'm not totally counting out a Uruguayan upset but I'd say 85% we will see Romania take the last spot and preserve their perfect participation record at RWC's.

Dragos why was Romania experimenting on the European nations cup ? I believe that Romania will be on the world cup but I still would like to play a team that we don't get to play often.... we will play with Romania this spring so we'll get to see which team is stronger... I hope you will not do experiments just before world cup... Its been long time since strongest teams of Georgia and Romania last met. I think that Uruguay would be a much better team if they could play teams like ours more often

The experiments were part of an attempt to create a younger team, with only Romanian-based players. The disastrous results showed it was a bad idea, but I would not be too sure the first team will be used in the spring games either. But I do hope the first teams will meet at the RWC, and that Romania or Georgia will manage at least one decent result against one of the stronger sides in the group.

Otherwise I agree that Uruguay needs more games against European teams, they did get invited twice to the IRB Nations Cup, and that trend should continue.

Uruguay also got to play in the Churchill cup this year facing off against Russia, Canada and France A. They had a decent game against Russia but could only hold off the Canadians and French for a period of time, I'm glad they are getting invited to more competitions it would be nice to see another team from the Americas on a regular basis.

With Argentina joining the Four Nations in 2012, Uruguay is the next country on the list to make a breakthrough. Uruguay is a country with only 3 million people so the chances of them ever threatening the top countries is slim but who knows what it may bring

I agree that rugby will benefit tremendously from Argentina entering the 3N. No question about this. it is going to be absolutely huge. As a rugby player, coach and massive fan in Brazil I am extremely happy about it. Brazil, though, has the msot potential of anyone to join Argentina at the top table. There are 30% more players per year and more clubs than either Chile or Uruguay.

Anyow I predict Uruguay to get a 1 point win in the cold in Bucharest and advance to New Zealand 2011. Here is my match preview: http://rugbyworldcup-argentina2023.blogspot.com/2010/11/romania-vs-uruguay-preview.html

You honestly think Uruguay can beat Romania in Bucharest ? and USA beat Georgia in Tbilisi ? I think you are underestimating ENC teams

Anywhere streaming this? And what's the GMT for the game?

I know I'm side tracking the thread by asking this but is Sevens inclusion in the 2016 Rio Olympics helping to raise rugby's profile in Brazil much?
