The Kings have officially been liquidated

Nothing has been made official about the Super Rugby as of yet. But it's a mere formality I suppose.

The vote by the SARU members on Tuesday revealed that everyone was in favour of the Kings not to participate in the Currie Cup Premier division, but that it was the Griffons who voted against the promotion of the Leopards who they feel unfairly gets a promotion that wasn't on the cards during the prelims.

Yea, that's true nothing has officially been said. But I really don't think they can come back from where they are now. I get the feeling that this process is not going to be a quick one and with the debt collection now being priority number one, they are effectively done.

Yup. They will basically have to start a whole new rugby union for that area, and rent the stadium from the Municipality for a venue. Something I don't see happening any time in the near future.

The Question is now, what will happen with the Super Rugby? Will we be obligated to have 6 teams in the tournament? Will we just have 5 teams? Will we give up our spot for another region to launch a new team? Or will the Kings spot just be given to the 6th best position on the Currie Cup overall log?

Thinking outside the box here, but could Namibia front with a Super Rugby team? (The Windhoek Fish-Eagles)

In general there's talk about new Super Rugby teams in the Pacific Islands, Uruguay, Palmerston North, west coast of North America...

But I don't see any of them being ready in time for 2017, unless they radically change the format to have a 2nd division.
If I had to pick one, probably a Pacific Islands team in Fiji and a return to a 3 conference format.

I highly doubt it.

Namibia's Currie Cup team only won 1 game all season so far in the qualification rounds.

Also a new development that happened late yesterday was that the Port Elizabeth metro municipality gave the Kings a R20million support package and now they will remain in the Premier Division of the Currie Cup, but their first match that was scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed to next week, in order to give them more time to prepare.

Taranaki would be the next in line for a Super Rugby team in NZ, if there were to ever be another.

Namibia would suffer in SR. While the Pumas, Griquas and Boland would do better than the Kings in SR as is I still feel the Kings are better placed long term but for politics. Am I naive in thinking they know what is wrong and will address it?

If we can't get the Kings up and running then we need to look outside of SA because I expect we won't be able to go back to 15 teams. My gut feel is put Argentina in the SA conference, Japan in the Aus one and get someone new on board and into the NZ conference whether that's another NZ side, a PI side or another Asia or Americas side I wouldn't know which would be most lucrative/competitive.

I almost want to say even if the Kings stay on board have a 6 team SA conference and toss the Jaguares into the NZ conference (Japan still with Aussie). But I think it'd be best if we can keep the Jaguares within the SA conference because they are a competitive team or at least should be next year.

I'm just wondering what the impact will be due to the Liquidation... Will SARU now just start from scratch with a new Franchise, keep their base at PE and do a mashup of players who are next in line for a Super Rugby spot, as in mash the Pumas/Boland/Leopards/Griffons together and make a new team.

A pacific island team could probably get organised pretty quick, wouldn't be undeserving

That would be embarrasing for them and for the competition. They don't have the skills to play at that level

Jags should play better next year so competition will be tougher on that conference. A Namibia team would be trashed. I would put the next one in the line from SA that has the money to back a up a decent team. I was pain full to watch Kings play in that big ass stadium for 300 people.

Perhaps this is the awaited opportunity for a South American multi nations franchise.

This would be my hope as well. We could possibly go back to 3 equal sized conferences with Jaguares in an SA conference, Sunwolves in the Aussie one and a PI team in the NZ conference playing half of each other conference and double in-conference for only one less game week. I think the Jagaures should be a lot more competitive next year so the SA conference should have 5 relatively equally strong sides while the NZ conference should also be strong. I fear the Aussie conference wouldn't become any more competitive with the Sunwolves there though but it does make more geogaphic sense.

I hate it when you type a very long post click post and it just disappears. That very demoralizing.

On topic. Its probably more likely that they will get a new team instead of changing the format. Surely they cant renege on the contracts with the broadcasting companies. SANZAAR has probably spent some of that TV money as operational costs during the recent tournament. If a new SA franchise is going to join they have not yet started planning so very unlikely. I Suspect a new kings will join next year with pretty much the same players just a different owner.

Sorry to the club and fans, it's never nice to see a liquidation. But I must admit I'm pleased they are no longer in SR, they were a warmup match that gave you 5 points and the SA teams in their group got to play them twice, lopsiding an already lopsided competition.

I hope they give the remaining spot to an NZ team. A Pacific Island team would be nice, but I doubt they have the financial backing to ever pack or punch or be capable of maintaining a team.
