On Friday afternoon Los Pumas head coach, Santiago Phelan, named a list of 39 players to travel to the U.S. city of Pensacola, Florida to train in a two week extensive athletic program from July 3-17. Only one player not selected remains in contention for a place at Rugby World Cup 2011, Juan Martín Hernández. El Mago was not selected as he will remain in Paris to continue his rehabilitation following picking up a severe knee injury fowhile playing for Racing Metro earlier in the year. Phelan´s squad includes a number of surprizes such as, Andrés Bordoy, who has been picked following his impressive season for La Rochelle in the Top 14 and positive performances this month for Los Jagures in the IRB Nations Cup in Romania. His selection is based on the fact that he is capable of playing both prop and hooker.

The inclusion of Bordoy means there is no place for Toulouse hooker, Alberto Vernet Basulado or Gloucester hooker Matias Cortese. Other professional players to have missed out on selection include Juan Pablo Orlandi (Racing Metro), Horacio San Martín (Aironi) and Ignacio Mieres (Exeter Chiefs). The side has a number of players from Los Pampas XV, the Vodacom Cup Champions. Those included are Gabriel Ascarate, Maximilano Bustos, Agustín Creevy, Julio Farias Cabello, Genaro Fessia, Mariano Galarza, Agustín Gozio, Juan Imhoff and Nicólas Sanchez.

Of the 40 players (including Juan Martín Hernández) 30 will represent Argentina at Rugby World Cup 2011. The campaign for Argentina to host Rugby World Cup 2023 wishes the players the best of luck on being selected.
