Swing Low

Jerusalem's class I think. It's about Jesus headlining Glastonbury in 23 AD or something. What's not to love? If that was the English national anthem, even James McClean would sing along.

Reminds me of Jonah Lomu Rugby game, back in 97', fend fend fend.

Ohhh yeah @Kiwi_; the best rugby game ever! Despite the terrible graphics and the jerseys didn't have numbers. The gameplay was amazing

well, she's annoying....
Anything in particular you disagree with?

For me, she's spot on, and her story is something I can relate to. I hide my sexuality in general, not because I'm worried about negativity towards it, but because I'm tremendously introverted and hate being in the spotlight. I don't want to be politicised for my sexuality.

And this draws parallels with Chris Oti. Unless he himself drew attention to his race, it's generally unwelcome for others to do it for him (even if in a positive light).

Really? It's a fairly commonly-held belief in my experience. Not saying I know whether it was intended that way, but can see why people might assume so.

No, you categorically stated that "the story of how it started was racist". This gets dredged up every once in a while when the Grauniad and their ilk are short on stories, but I've never heard an accound of the origin of Swing Low being an anthem told any different to how Wikipedia tells it - it was sung because Oti is an old boy of the Benedictine school, not because he is black.

I hate the idea that it should be done away with because people too ignorant or lazy to find out the origin of the song and its use in rugby might be offended, but then I live in a country in which people worry about the racist implications of ordering a black coffee!

Jerusalem is a much better song, much more stirring and emotive. But it isn't the song of English rugby, and that's just the point for me

There are plenty of songs that I would prefer to hear, Jerusalem being one of my favourites, but it's a moot point. Singing Jerusalem required a vocal range and a memory. When's the last time the "supporters" at Twickenham got past the chorus of Swing Low and on to the first verse?!?

I said "the story" because I'm repeating what I've heard, not because I believe that myself. Perhaps I would have been better saying "the story I heard is that it was racist". I wasn't there, I don't know, and more importantly it doesn't matter because no one who sings it nowadays is being racist.

I don't think it's racist, but lets not forget the Benedictine order is the Black Monks etc... iirc, there is certainly some tongue in cheek-ness around the use of the song by the school.

I'd like it to go because it's just a really boring monotonous song when sung en mass like that...

I'd prefer Jerusalem be sung as an anthem, and Land of Hope and glory as the in game song. :D

Absolutely no problem with what she's saying, i agree with her I merely find HER annoying - in style and delivery.

Though, and i want to be a little careful here, i do find it a bit ironic that she's telling people off for unwanted attention on Youtube.

Okay slightly tangential here but would rather talk about this than some song a bunch of rugby fans sing when on top or to gee up their team.

I agree about the irony but I think some people who like j'nuh (and I'm not speaking for him) would rather live their lives like everyone else with only difference being they like members of the same sex need people to say things like this. Now in the very brief clip I saw I'd say she actually does want the attention due to as GN10 pointed the style and delivery she just wants the attention on her terms. I find that a little bit more something to struggle with, if you want the attention to drawn to yourself you have to take the good with the bad. It's like j'nuh said if your courting to become an "icon" of something you get everything even the bad (even if you shouldn't).

Now for me most of my life is within geek culture a community that has embraced (at least within the circles I run in) the LGBT+ members within it with open arms. I think it comes from being a bunch of social outcasts ourselves we just want people to happy within themselves (which is slightly amusing considering most of hobbies involve escapism). However there is a very vocal subset of them (I'd say they were in majority of the group but there might be many more less vocal ones I don't know about) that demand to be heard for their LGBT+ issues and really thrust the issue in people faces. Some of arguments I've seen have been absurd we had one game (30+ people) set in 1941 Nazi occupied territory and we had complaints characters couldn't out and proud gay people even though the entire setting would of required players to treat them pretty badly but those players wouldn't of been allowed to that according to this group due to reasons... Another lesbian friend of mind is into cosplay but insists on always doing gender swaped versions of male comic book characters.

I'm not saying they should speak up for their views on things god knows I do all the time and my voice isn't more important than others. My point simply is there are plenty of LGBT+ people out there being very vocal and demanding attention that we sometimes forget there are people like j'nuh that want none of it.

I hate it and I hate the actions pricks do with it.

Hahahahahah lets do a w*****g sign when we sing coming forth..... Because we are such Lads and banter masters.

Mind you in general I hate the twickenham crowd anyone up themselves pricks full of "Lads" who will never accomplish much on a rugby field but are the armchair masters.

If you haven't guess I hate the whole Lad culture.

Rant over........ For now.

Jerusalem would be amazing though.

You're sound with drinking loads of pints though right?

Land and hope and glory for everything Imo, a crowd belting out the chorus to that would give me goosebumps.

About that song. I'm looking a good video of that, please upload a video with good quality. Thanks
