Super 15: Stormers - Sharks in Cape Town (30-04-2011)

Well, Smit is off. Now McLeod, Alberts and Terblanche to be replaced and we might have a chance

Maybe I am biased but Elstadt has been so lucky to get away without a yellow card twice now, Burger tackling without his arms, full shoulder charge, and also no card. Not that it had to be a card, but they can count themselves lucky not to be off for 10

My stream keeps blowing. This is frustrating. Will download the match tomorrow and watch the rest of it

What a f*cking **** poor display.
12+ handling errors
11+ turnovers
Not a single effective line-break
Not even 50 percent of the effort of the opposition
Not adapting to the referee, if they can play like thugs and disrupt us and constantly throw the ball into the line-out within the inside shoulder, why didn't we?
Too much individualism, it was inevitable that we would get beaten by the better team, because the Sharks simply didn't put out one

But hey, at least Aberdeen won today :)

Idd, not the best match of the year.

Plumtree embaressed by Sharks performance

Sharks coach John Plumtree says that the lack of attitude on the part of his players led to an embarrassing 32-12 defeat at the hands of the Stormers in Saturday night's Super Rugby derby at Newlands.

After the match, Plumtree said it was one of the hardest defeats he's had to endure as a Sharks coach.

"They (the Stormers) hurt us ... they hurt us," said Plumtree. "The physicality and the power shift was with the Stormers.

"They wanted (to win) it more. We talk a good game but we're not delivering.

"It (the Sharks performance) was embarrassing more than anything else.

"We'll have to stand up and be a genuine threat but clearly our attitude is not right . We need to look at that," said Sharks captain John Smit.

"After those three tries we had to play catch-up and we just couldn't get there," said Smit.

"The Stormers seemed to get the ball from the breakdowns quite quickly so I'll like to see the video (of the game)."

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee, said as satisfying as the result was, the side still have lots of work to do.

"Beating the Sharks twice is very good but there is still a lot of rugby to be played," said Coetzee.

"The players are working hard to make this season's campaign a success and this result will be encouraging for them.

"We have to make sure that we get the technical stuff right and we have to make sure that we do that every week."

Schalk Burger, the Stormers captain, said the Sharks are a quality side but his side was better on the day.

'Man-of-the-Match' Jean de Villiers, the stand-out Stormers centre, said everything the side tried in the match worked out well.

I completely agree with this. It was an awful performance with conceded turn-overs, knock ons, horrible decisionmaking (kicking for goal every frikkin' time) and just not the willpower to win.

The picture says it all

Berger needs to keep his mouth shut and stop acting like some soccer player in histronics arguing with the ref, especially when he does a blatant shoulder charge and gets away with it. Horrible example to young players.

Ugly game all round, Sharks need to poach a better midfield.

One side in it today.
Stormers did the basic and won; we couldn't keep a hold of the ball.
JLP outside half, Lambie 12 and Jacobs 13?
Marius needs to hurry up...

Either way, simply amateur.
We are lucky to be in the top 6, but for how long?

Yeah, Sharks looked not up to it on the weekend. To be fair to them the Stormers were at home and after a bye I can't remeber the Stormers losing any match in recent years?

The one thing I just couldn't get my mind round and was glad the Sharks kept on doing; they kept attcking out of their own 22... against the best defense in the game (Stormers only conceding half a try a game so far in 2011)... even though there was tons of time left and they were within range (at least until they weren't anymore LOL). That's exactly the reason we lost against the Reds; we couldn't get uot of our 22 although we at least tried but got 1-upped in the kicking department with Grant and Aplon not getting any distance and Cooper putting in a master-class kicking display. Sharks were just naive.

Also, how horrible is Jaco Peyper? Even though we won I thought he nearly butchered what ought to have been a great derby match. He was horrible in the Stormers vs Reds game as well. I hope he doensn't blow a Stormers game again, yikes. Incompetent IMO.

First off he is the captain and like a good captain he needs to communicate with the ref , secondly he never argued , he simply apologized and admitted he made a mistake and said that he tried to adjust. Nothing horrible about that , the shoulder charge yes but not him rtalking to the ref , he was in fact very diplomatic in my opinion. AND Thirdly it was not a ugly game all round , Stormers scored some awesome tries , De Villiers and Fourie once again proved their call , Habs looked a little better , we saw another side of Aplon with a great Drop goal and the Stormers forwards owned the much more fancied Sharks forwards , our loosies killed the sharks loosies.

So Jaa , sharks did not play crap , Stormers outplayed them and out muscled them for the second time this year. 32-12 says it all. I think the sharks biggest mistake is that they relied too much on Lambie and Alberts , Take them out and the sharks crumbled. Stormers showed that they can play without grant which was a surprise for me actually.

I'm not surprised we were competitive without Grant at all; Grant is still no.1 but he doesn't get much distance on his kicks. Him at 10 with Aplon at 15 both not gaining more than 25m on return kicks is the reason we lost to the Reds; couldn't get out of our 22.

If Grant is at 10 we need Jantjes' boot at 15. Cronje has a decent boot and with him at 10 we can afford playing Aplon at 15 but my picks for the backline would still be;

9 Duvenhage
10 Grant
11 Habana
12 De Villiers
13 Fourie
14 Aplon
15 Jantjes

20 Januarie
21 Cronje - can cover 15 as well; in fact I'd rather have him come on at 15 than Aplon move to 15 should Jantjes come off but I expect the staff see De Jongh as the best back on the bench so they bring him on and shift De Villiers to wing and move Aplon to fullback. I don't like this one bit; De Villiers is allright on the wing but wasted and Aplon and Grant at 10 and 15 mean we can get bullied for distance on kicks again.
22 De Jongh

No he was getting in the refs face and arguing until he was told to shut it. Kinda like Matfield has started to do, telling the ref to watch it on the big screen etc. And it was ugly from a Sharks perspective, wouldn't be ugly from a Stormers supporter as they played very well and look a mile better than the team that the reds destroyed.

Another little clip of Burgers attitude towards the refs.

Well I disagree , he was in my opinion very tactful and diplomatic with the ref , guess we will agree to disagree , wonder how our NZ and Aussie friends feel about it.

Re the performance , yes as Sharks supporter it was not a lekka game and performance but I will take out one positive and that is that the sharks frontrow scrummed very well and as it stands now the sharks frontrow will be the WC frontrow come September.

I hoped for a better game between these two topped ranked teams in the SA conference. With plenty of supports around my area glad with the result saying the Stormers have the best chance at the ***le this year. I was quite confident that the Sharks would put up a better match up but was proven wrong as it was apparent that the Stormers had other ideas.

Well played and thoroughly deserving the victory. Now we get to see them take on the team that will test them in all aspects come Saturday. Good Luck holding thumbs from a SA point of view!:)<O:p</O:p

Well, we got thoroughly F'd in the A. Next??? <_<

The Stormers played one hell of a game. I think we should give Stefan a rest, and give Jacobs a full go at it. He has the knack to create space.
I'd also give Hoffman a go, Mcleod can't seem to give consistently high performances or maybe he just needs a rest.
Our backline also seems to have no time on the ball, we need to stand deeper.

Yeah but then the danger is not making the advantage line and turnovers, big difference hitting a breakdown when your forwards have to run backwards and then forwards through the channel to compete. Rush d's are vulnerable to smart teams, but Sharks were just too one dimensional.

The saders will be expecting the same sort of rush D and will have multiple counters worked out in advance, although not having Carter and Ellis really limits them.

Yeah the Sharks midfield is their weakness IMO. Playing a flyhalf at 12 and a fullback at 13, both rather small, is probably the reason the Sharks lack some penetration.

I certainly respect the Crusaders but don't see them scoring more than 2 tries against the Stormers. Will be a bigger challenge than the Sharks but if we can halt the forwards gaining momentum i can't see even the Crusaders put us under too much pressure.
