Super 15: Crusaders - Highlanders in Christchurch (01/06/2012)

landers know they arent getting enough ball or territory to win this game, there panicking a bit. Its like they cant kick themselves out of their own half which is a real worry when your playing the saders.

Stupid play by Haskell.... the Highlanders now down to 14...

Dammit Guildford is fast...

18-13 to the Crusaders after 32 mins.

Crusaders just destroyed the Highlanders scrum

EDIT: Another try for Guildford setup by a brilliant Carter kick.. 23-13 with the kick to come. Make that 25-13.

Oh FFS..... now Crotty scores from a Fruean break.

I think it's time to bring Michael Bent on ;)

Length of the field try scored in the end by McCaw. Got away with a big forward pass though...

Crusaders just about score another, but Crotty went the wrong way after making a great break

Have to say these two teams would destroy ireland the way their playing. Incredibly depressing, good rugby tho.

Try Crockett. Crusaders far too good.

Intercept try for Gear now.. need two more to get a bonus point

Totally against the run of play - intercept try from Gear. Good chase from Crotty, who made Gear score close to the corner.

Fulltime. 51-18 to the Crusaders. A really enjoyable game (despite the final score!).

I suppose the big question for me is why are New Zealand investing so much into a player, Sonny Bill Williams, who signs one year contracts and flirts about with other sports when you have a real threat in Ryan Crotty. He was superb tonight. The other player which I reckon will someday be a great hooker for the All Blacks is that Quentin Macdonald, only 23 years old.

It was good to see Crotty have another strong game (the weak missed tackle on Ellison aside). He has really struggled with injuries in recent years - if he can remain injury free he has the potential to push for higher hours. Likewise Quentin MacDonald has really struggled with injuries too, so it was great to see him have a strong match - his running/handling skills are phenomenal for a hooker.

Man of the match for me though was Sam Whitelock. He was everywhere, both in attack and defense, and dominated in the air. McCaw continues to get better every week, and Read looked strong too. In the backs Ellis had a great game - he certainly has the AB's 9 jersey sewn up at the moment. Carter ran the attack well, and his kicking was pretty good. Guildford looked sharp too, but Dagg was again pretty quiet.

Hard to pickout standouts in the Highlanders given they were comprehensively beaten. Aaron Smith had a pretty good game at 9, though lacks the complete game that Ellis possess. Ellison was probably the pick of the Highlanders for me, looking dangerous on attack, and solid on defense - he certainly deserves his AB's call-up. Both Gear and Ben Smith were pretty quiet, but I'm sure they would have been far more effective had they been part of the Crusaders backline!

...and boy, didn't he grab his chance tonight with both hands!!!

Some absolute class in that squad. Funny that Crotty, Fruean, Guildford, Maitland and Dagg would later make up the majority of the Crusaders back line.

Considering that is U19, that is a decent amount of players who have continued to the next level.

Quentin was reall impressive, I really hope that was a breakthrough performance for him. It really should be and off the back of that he should earn some starts ahead of Flynn. NZ need more young hookers getting gametime at super level.

interesting game, despite the scoreline I think the highlanders would have beaten many other teams with that performance. Was a really fierce contest, with that I think the Crusaders have earned their tag back as being the most dangerous team in the comp again, a tag maybe they lost in the rebels game.

He was also part of the New Zealand Under 20 team the following year that won the inaugural Under 20 Rugby World Championship too. Others in that team (that were not also included in the U19 squad) were Toby Smith, Aaron Smith and Andre Taylor....
