After ten years at the club, Steve Borthwick has decided to leave Bath Rugby and make the move to Watford-based Saracens. “I have played for Bath Rugby since the beginning of my professional career and from the very start I was welcomed by everybody at the club, especially the tremendous supporters,†said Borthwick. “The club has a great history and is working hard towards a very successful future.â€

Confirming that his move was purely based on facing new challenges, Borthwick added, “after 10 years here, I feel that the time is right for a new challenge. A change in club provides that and I am excited about what the future holds.

“I am very confident that the excellent player group at Bath Rugby will get stronger and my commitment for the rest of the season will continue to be of the highest standard.â€

Head Coach, Steve Meehan, talking earlier today, is positive that the move will not impact upon the growing success of the club: “We need to concentrate on the remainder of the season. Steve Borthwick has committed himself to still playing hard for the club until the end of the season. At the same time, we have had considerable wins on and off the pitch and that will continue.

“Over the coming months, positive announcements will be made that will reassure fans that we will continue to move in the right direction.â€

Chief Executive, Bob Calleja, reiterated Meehan’s sentiments, demonstrating his confidence that the club is still moving in the right direction: “Naturally we are disappointed that he has decided to leave, especially in light of recent successes. The fact is the club is moving in the right direction and we thank Steve Borthwick for his commitment that he has shown in the past.â€

This is a huge shock for me and probably thousends of other Bath fans, he has been a excellent player for the club and has always given 100%. It'll be a shame to see him go :( :(

I think him, Chris Jack and Richard Hill will lend allot of experience and leadership to the Saracens pack. He seems in good fitness and form as well. At 28, he has at least another five years of loyal service left in him so I guess he'll find it in his heart to make the grade in training.

Huge loss to Bath, but he has been there long enough to make a huge impact to the club and the fans surrounding the club... I personally think this is a good move for Bath and Borthwick, players sometimes need new challenges and clubs need to push youth through the ranks to help grow the future of the club...

I want to wish Steve all the best for next season and the coming seasons at Sarries... Now lets win the Guinness Premiership or something to bring Silverware back to the Rec...
