Star players

should HB studios keep star players?

I do like Ranger's idea's. Simple and does reflect the true abilities of players in their own category of expertise...Will also allow gamers more coaching choice on all aspects of the game by allowing them to mix and match combo’s of players on attack and defense. Ex: The gamer will now have to think on his feet (attack & defense) should you for instance have an aerial ace (Mattfield) throwing a quick line out ball to a passer (FJP), who then throws a long, flat, skip pass to a tackle breaker (Jacque Fourie). By allowing the above will pro-long Rugby 2012 shelve live as this will never fall into a stereo type game play, where everybody finds a glitch and keeps repeating it.
 
When playing against the Computer I find that the opposition always attempt drop goals in the 22.

I think traits such as these should be Player/Team Specific e.g. French Teams such as Biarritz or Francois Steyn rather than every team in the game doing it.

The Reds run the ball OUT of their own 22 a lot compared to other teams

There are so many mauls from South African clubs and teams

Hope Lima would be included? lol

but it is a little ridiculous how legends are included in game from two years later.

Then again, youd have to include old players like Lima, Pichot etc because these rugby games dont come out so often?

He was playing at cardiff at the time.
 
Another "star" ability that a player should have is:
-Play/Game Reader or Master Mind {increased ability to perform an interception} (JDV , Habana)

This "star" ability will of course only work if HB includes an interception feature in the game...

Sorry man i thought about this and i just don't think it could work in game. The thing that makes JDV and Habana so good at intercepts is that they know when to go for them, in a game, the gamer controls when they go for an intercept.

All you could do is just make it more likely that an intercept will come off when a gamer tries it.. this is just wrong though because its all about timing. Even in basketball games when there are loads of intercepts per game they dont have an intercept rating because its too hard to implement.. It would be hard to assign ratings too, sure Habana and JDV are 90 something, but what number do you give everyone else? noone really knows
 
I like how people are picking the stats should relflect real players option. it makes me feel good to be a rugby player :)
 
Yeah I think maybe you dont need them, it really irritated me that Castrogiovanni wasnt one on the last game! And lets face it they would probably make Cipriani one....which would just be ridiculous! Get the player stats right and you dont need them!
 
i reckon in a way they should keep them but where they had player specialties (i.e. players could be specialist tackle breakers/tacklers/drop goal kickers/scorers etc.) they could further enhance them. e.g. ma'a nonu could be a star tackle breaker and he'll be near invincible :p, no but he could just break more tackles than ur average center.
 
I think the problem with the stars in Rugby08 was that the made the players TOO good. Every tackle Burger made he got a turn over, every tackle Jerry Collins made was a huge hit, every kick Dan Carter made went 80m on the full and landed 10cm inside the touchline, every time Shane Williams did a step he made a break.... I mean the players who we're given stars we're given them because they are good, but maybe not quite that good. Maybe if the skills were toned down a bit they they should be kept but it would be easier just to get rid of them.
 
Chasing restarts should be a special ability aswell, like Moody and Croft should have it and Ferris. And Tindall etc

Okay,

Ive given this a bit of thought and its actually a trickier issue than i first gave it credit for, Here are what i perceive to be the problems with the star player system as it is;

-The little stars above their heads look too arcade-y and a little bit gay. (petty i know but there it is)

-The distribution of star players will never be fair. Last time australia had 6 star players and the springboks had 3? Also, if the you have to reach to be a star player is at the level of Carter/Habana etc, why is O'Gara a star player? where is the line?

-A "Star" seems to mean something different to every player. In Carter and Wilkinson it meant you could kick a long way, In BOD it meant you were physically unable to be tackled (Infuriating), in Habana it meant your sidestep worked every time (Seriously, every single time. no matter where the defender was)

-The "Frans Steyn problem." Steyn has the biggest boot in world rugby, so he should get a star so that he can kick further than anyone else. BUT he has alot of flaws to his game, even the most vocal Steyn supporter couldnt argue that he was in the top 20 or 25 (what ever the number of star players there are) in the world. The same could be said for Rene Ranger. He has poor defensive positioning, a non-existant kicking game, he makes bad decisions often and has a suspect passing game. That being said he is probably the best tackle breaker in SANZAR. he should have a star to give him the ability to rip through tackles, but as it stands he isnt good enough allround to warrant one.

Heres what i offer therefore to replace the stars;

Instead of having the top 20 rugby players in the world getting stars that show they are awesome at everything, how about if a player has a particular talent, then they get some sort of icon to show and enhance that talent. Sort of like the player abilities section that exists at the moment, except you would have noticeable improvements in the way the player plays and they would be given out as sparingly as the stars.
You would have abilities with tangible results such as;

-Tackle Breaker{increase in the amount of tackles broken} (Nonu, Ranger, Ioane, Caucau, Powell etc)
-Power Kicker {increase in kicking distance}(Steyn, M Steyn, Nick Evans etc)
-Big Hitter{increase in noticeably heavy tackles/ balls jarred loose, maybe even some different animations} (Nonu,SBW, Chabal etc)
-Ball Winner {increase in the likelyhood that a tackle of theirs becomes a turnover, maybe even different animations} (McCaw, Brussow, Pocock, Dussitioir etc)
-Aerial Ace {increased ability to win lineouts} (Matfield etc)
-Scrum Technician {Increased ability to win scrums} (Hayman, Alexander, Murray etc)
-Fleet footed {increase in agility, acceleration and side-step abiltiy} (Nanai-Williams, Quade Cooper, Shane Williams)
-Speedster {Increase in raw pace} (Rod davies, Varndell ect)
-Passer {Increase in speed of pass and likelyhood the player will catch it} (Conrad Smith, Genia, FDP etc)

There are definately more categories i just couldnt be bothered continuing.

How about, there is an icon and name for every rating and if a player gets to 95 in any rating, they get the corresponding icon.
So if they get to 95 in lineout jumping, they get the icon aerial ace, if they get to 95 in tackle breaking, they get the icon tackle breaker etc.

The icons are shown under a players name (but whether you can see the icons can be turned on or off depending on if you think the icons are too arcade-y or a little bit gay)
If a player has say 5 icons, then they are truly an allround superstar footballer, and those 5 icons get replaced by a STAR that shows that they have mastered 5 or more aspects of the game of rugby.

I like this idea to a certain extent, the thing is rugby 08 already has this sort've system. The command abilities? They do actually have quite a large influence.
 
get rid of stars and use stats to determent the players ability every sports game i played has gotten rid of them
 
Stat-specific "stars" as suggested by ranger sounds good! But I don't think all players with a 95 or higher rating should get an 'boost'. BTW, Spies has a monster boot, dropped a goal in training from 60 meters, but his accuracy is not that good. So his kicking power could be a star but his accuracy a low 60 or something. Would be nice if Carter or Steyn could 'hook' or 'slice' the ball. Even they make mistakes when kicking under pressure or with too much time.
 
Certain players should be STAR players. The Rugby 08 game had the option to remove the yellow star whle playing. The Star players still made the same impact even though the "STARS" were removed! I don't think anything should change!
 
After reading most of this Thread i don't really think that i want 'Star Players' but more the 'Special Ability' Feature from Rugby 06 to be greatly enhanced.

In Rugby 06 players had these abilities, they included: Command, Passer, Playmaker, Scorer, Tactical Kicker, Crash Ball, Tackle Breaker, Tackler, Ball Winner, Defensive Organiser, Scrummager and Jumper. But they didn't seem to have that much effect on the players.

If this feature was used i believe it would be more accurate and realistic, because as mentioned in earlier posts some players like Dan Carter would have more than one Special Ability, and other players like (obvious example) Franciuos Steyn would have to have the biggest boot in the game probably wouldn't be worthy of 'Star Player' status because there are other aspects of his game that aren't so great.

Plus the Stars looked very arcade like and this is supposed to be a rugby simulation game not an arcade style game!
 
the only problem with alldifferent icons is then the screen is going 2 be cluttered with them, but i guess u can have an option so 2 see them or not. but maybe put a different stars eg, player with 2 or more abilities gets bronze star, 3 abilities silver and 4 and over gold
 
I've always played with everything off anyway it just gives an unfair advantage and it makes it a little bit more of a challenge.
