Referees selected for 2011 Rugby World Cup
By Andrew Baldock, PA
Friday, 8 April 2011

George Clancy will take charge of the tournament's opening game between New Zealand and Tonga

English officials Wayne Barnes and Dave Pearson have both been selected among a 10-strong panel of referees for the World Cup in New Zealand later this year.

Barnes and Pearson are joined by Wales' Nigel Owens and Irish pair Alain Rolland and George Clancy, with Clancy taking charge of the tournament's opening game between New Zealand and Tonga in Auckland on September 9.

The remaining places are filled by Frenchman Romain Poite, South African pair Jonathan Kaplan and Craig Joubert, New Zealand's Bryce Lawrence and Australian official Steve Walsh.

The group will preside over all 48 games, supported by seven dedicated assistant referees and four television match officials.

Among the assistant referees are Stuart Terheege (England), Tim Hayes (Wales) and Simon McDowell (Ireland), with assistants Jerome Garces (France) and Chris Pollock (New Zealand) also acting as reserve match referees.

Full appointments for the pool games will be announced by the International Rugby Board in August.

Selections were made following a comprehensive review of refereeing performances by the IRB match official selection committee, chaired by IRB Council member David Pickering, at its two-day meeting in Dublin this week.

Clancy will be making his World Cup debut, while Kaplan and Walsh are set to officiate at a record fourth tournament. Between them, the 10 referees have controlled 287 Test matches.

Pickering said: "In selecting 10 referees, we are underlining our commitment to further enhancing consistency and a policy of selecting the best match officials for the world's best teams at rugby's showcase tournament.

"While inevitably there are those who are unlucky to miss out on selection, it is really exciting to see the likes of George Clancy, Dave Pearson, Romain Poite, Bryce Lawrence and Craig Joubert included within a Rugby World Cup referee panel for the first time on merit."

Among the names not included are Ireland's Alan Lewis, Australian Stuart Dickinson, plus South Africans Marius Jonker and Mark Lawrence.

How Steve Walsh made it I am not sure.

Cannot believe Clancy got opening game, he was terrible the other night.

Good selection mind, good to see a lad from Aberystwyth going to the big stage.

No Dickinson yay. Barnes and Walsh though... :(

Not happy at all with the reffing pannel. Shite. Rolland, Kaplan, Walsh and even Lawrence are rubbish. Would have much rather had Vinny Munro from NZ than Lawrence. At least no Dickenson, although I'm supprised he missed out considering who was let in. Owens, Barnes and Joubert are all class though, so I hope they get the good matches.

Hopefully Barnes will get New Zealand vs France :D

Though, for the record, I think he's one of the best refs around

No Alan "possum-in-the-headlights" Lewis either.

How did Joubert not make it, whilst the likes of Lawrence and Walsh do?
Imagine having the potential for a ref that was sacked less than 2 years before reffing the RWC final?

I hope Paddy is happy

O'Brien doesn't select the referees for RWC; he doesn't even select them for the iRB Test Panel, nor is he even the head of the Selectors Panel.

Poor old POB cops a lot of flack for decisions that were not of his making, and aren't even in his purview.

Bit surprised that the Welsh TMO Tony Rownlands is not going, made some pretty good decisions in the Magners.

Loving that Dave Pearson is going, supply's a good amount of chat, not as good as old Tony Spreadbury however.

Alan Lewis is a far better referee than Bryce Lawrence and Craig Joubert

any chance of one of the referees making the effort to speak French,Italian or Spanish this WC? *

Alain Rolland is the only one that does as far as I know, which is a bit pathetic in my opinion

*discounting Poite and Damasco as they won't ref any France or Italy games

Spreadbury was legendary aye...

Barnes speaks French a lot during the games...

Walsh, Barne... FFS
I thought Goddard retired :( (I was rather pleased at the time)

Just out of curiousity, if he doesn't pick the refs or have an input on the rules of the game, what the hell does POB do?

Poite at World Cup should be great craic. Has any of Southern Hemisphere met him yet ha ha
