The Reds are set to grab the prized signature of Wallabies finisher Joe Tomane to solve their need for size and speed on the wing. Sources indicate the Reds are well advanced in negotiations to lure the winger, who broke their hearts in April as a Brumbies matchwinner. Signing 102kg Tomane would be a big piece to sort out the puzzle of the wingers and fullbacks who have left the Reds.

Former Wallabies winger Dom Shipperley yesterday announced a two-year deal with the Melbourne Rebels. That followed the exit to France of flyer Rod Davies (Biarritz) and Aidan Toua (Agen). Australian under-20 fullback Jonah Placid this week spurned the Reds, who handed him a Super Rugby debut at 18 this season, to sign with the Rebels. Nine-Test winger Tomane is everything the Reds need as a belated replacement for Digby Ioane.

They have paid for being without such a weapon in all 15 games they have played in this misfiring season. Early season speculation he was keen to sniff out a deal in Japan has dried up with Tomane saying he wants to stay in Australia. Tomane, 24, was schooled in Brisbane, has family here and has made a success of his rugby career since wasting his NRL chance at the Gold Coast ***ans.

Brumbies sign Tomane for Super Rugby until 2016

Why anyone would sign for the Reds after this season, they're going to need to really look to build from within before anyone will sign for them again.

Because in a weak team, you have the chance to play more games, more minutes as Woodward in Rebels or Alby Mathewson in Force

Serious bro?

They still draw massive crowds and play fast attacking rugby. That's enough for most

I think they have other issue than poor form, looking at their leadership team Genia and Horwill they seem to be in a bad place this season and the environment at the reds dosen't seem like an attractive one to be at considering the number of players departing.

One bad season is not the end of the world, they made the playoffs for the last 2 seasons and won the comp the year before that.

A few young fringe players would get a good opportunity there.

I would say that a lack of carrying power in the forwards, especially back row and a weak front row are the main problems.

The Hurricanes are a good example that it doesn't matter how good your backplay is, if your forwards can't do more than just compete then you aren't going to be consistently good.
