Tbh my old next door neighbours had a massive Amercian Bulldog cross Staffie and it was the softest thing to man or beast. Absolutely loved my dog Daisy(who would be but a tooth pick) as well as with small children.

This is so sad and yes i agree why buy a massive dog with an unknown temperament(because you just cant know) with a small child about.

Yeh I think in this instance they got the dog one week before he killed the child so he or she was not used to being around kids or trying to settle into its new home environment. Personally not a fan of this breed and certainly wouldn't have it around any young children.

i am sure on a case by case basis there are good ones but the staffies I have come across have been quite aggressive. Got bitten by one, which drew blood in the back of leg in the park who was thinking he was just playing.

Staffies are lovely dogs, incredible softies for the vast majority. But they have a problem with "Idiot Human Syndrome".
They look a bit like a Pitbull, which means that:
A: Idiots that want an aggressive looking dog, get a Staffie, give it a studded collar, show it aggression, and reward any aggression it does shows - these are bad owners, and they tend to gravitate to Staffies at the moment (now they can't gravitate towards Pitties)...
B: Other humans can be a bit scared of them as first instinct, and avoid socialising with them (making harder for non-idiot Staffie owners to socialise the dog), and have a bias that they'll consider confirmed by a single anecdote.
C*: Having a lot of irresponsible owners leads to being a lot of them in animal shelters, and they take a long time to shift - meaning that there are even more unloved and unsocialised Staffies out there. Also further "confirming" bias against them by otherwise reasonable dog-people ("If they were easy dogs, there wouldn't be so many in shelters")


* Same goes for Lurcher types, which "everyone knows are hard work"

Staffies are also incredibly powerful dogs and don't know their own strength unless they have been trained/socialised properly. The one that bit me wasn't even on a lead.

One of the owners when she saw it had bit me only went " oh sorry" like it was normal for it to greet strangers like that and no big deal. Should have told her control your dog and put it on a lead if you can't control it. But was in a bit of shock and pain at the time.

Only other time was when a kid had it on a lead and lucky he was as lunged at me and had to be pulled back.

Your right staffies incredibly powerful and some are vicious and many hate other dogs, but Diesel loves Daisy. As @Which Tyler said its the owners that shape the dog, thats not to say the breed dont have a more aggressive nature than others. My experience with staffies is that they love people and often are hit and miss with other dogs, Diesel will run up and play with small dogs without issue yet snap at them if he's on the lead sometime.

To have a breed like a staffie you have to know how to train them properly. But they are lovely dogs. As said too many idiots out there who want them so they can look the big man.

Every time they mentioned his name, Talisker looked up, and twice left the sofa all excited to search around the house, obviously, we stopped watching after the second occassion.
