Premiership Cup 23/24

I know (most) Prem sides are putting out very young/inexperienced sides but I wouldn't have expected two scalps in the first round!

Given that sides that are relegated from the Premiership usually use the parachute payment to retain most of their Premiership quality and even then, lose a handful of games, it doesn't seem surprising to me that full-strength Championship sides are beating slightly augmented Premiership academy sides.

How accurate is that?
I've not looked at most of the teams put out, but Cornwall pushed Bath close, and Bath most certainly weren't a slightly augmented academy side.
I didn't get the impression Saracens were either, but dunno.

Only 3 of Saracens' starting lineup were academy players. The rest all on senior contracts.

Cornwall won't be playing until next April / May. Pirates.

Maybe "slightly augmented academy side" was overselling how weak these sides were, but my point stands - these sides are significantly weaker than the sides that the demoted Premiership team would be expected to field in The Championship.

How many players in these sides would be considered first choice for their clubs?

If I were to predict Sale's first choice 23 for the season then one player was in this week's side (either Veainu or Reed on the bench)
We had a few squad players with a decent amount of prem experience (Luke James starting, Ross Harrison and Josh Beaumont on the bench) but the majority are current academy or recent academy grads

1. Technically correct - the very best kind of correct
2.
3. For Bath? 3 first choice starters, 1 academy kid in the starting 15. Very much a 2nd XV, but not remotely academy - I don't know for other teams, hence asking.

Personally though, I've been calling for this competition since the AWC started, and I'm delighted with how it's gone, and (Exeter aside) has been more-or-less exactly what I was hoping for from it.

Come to any Cornish rugby club outside Penzance / Newlyn and explain that the fact that Cornwall != Cornish Pirates is a technicality and see how it goes down. This sort of confusion is the reason that a lot of the Cornish rugby community were up in arms when Pirates decided to adopt the Cornish moniker. But feel free to trivialise the feelings of a group of people who you neither know or understand to score Internet points.

A] Calm down dear, it's only a meme
B] I'm genuinely sorry that I offended you by agreeing with you

So when did Coventry and Ealing get relegated from the Premiership?

Eh? In Coventry's case, they dropped from level one in 1988. Ealing have never played at level one. I'm not sure what either of these things have to do with my point that these results are not as surprising as suggested, given that a couple of years back, Pirates rolled over a Saracens side containing Lions and a World Cup winner.

When was the last time that the side relegated from the Premiership went undefeated in The Championship?

Might be missing something but you are making a point that Championship clubs could beat weaker premiership clubs due to parachute payments? Ealing and Cov who won yesterday have never had such payments

No I'm not. I've just re-read my original post and think it was pretty clear. "sides that are relegated from the Premiership usually use the parachute payment to retain most of their Premiership quality". Where did I say that Ealing or Coventry have ever received a parachute payment? Neither side have ever played in the Premiership, hence, have never been relegated from it or received a parachute payment.

Ignore the parachute payment aside, which seems to have confused you. The point stands that neither of the wins for the Championship sides against Premiership sides are particularly surprising, given that historically, Championship sides have beaten stronger opposition.

We had quite a few seniors and new signings in our squad ..but I suspect a whole new coaching team wanted to take the opportunity to see the players in action as a guidance for the prem games.
