Australia have changed the Ruling on Overseas players, if you've played over 60 tests and had acontract for 7 years you can travel and still play for Australia:

NB: for ModS. I did this as an individual thread as i think it's a major discussion point for international rugby.

Wow.

I thought I would feel more strongly against this than I do, but I guess it's working to incentivize player to stay for longer, as there is no doubt the Wallabies jersey is losing some of its prestige. I hope with the money they will save, they spend extremely wisely. It will certainly hurt Australian domestic rugby as we will see a lot more players leave in the next few years. Will Australian fans still turn up to games when guys like Pocock and Beale leave in the next year or so when they hit that 60 mark? Would they leave anyway? The risk of course is that those players who are no longer playing in Aus, can still block the way for domestic players who may then just decide to leave.

Tricky solution. I can see some merit in it, certainly not a compromise I want New Zealand to make.

So is that's Giteau and Mitchell that are now available, anyone else?

Long shot but George Smith is still kicking around in Japan.

Barnes narrowly misses out. In reality this rule is probably more looking at keeping guys like AAC, Pocock, Cooper, O'Connor etc in the mix over the next few years - while not having to pay their wages.

Giteau alone is a massive move.

Stephen Moore
Ben Alexander
Benn Robinson
Adam Ashley-Cooper
George Smith

Rob Simmons (50 + 2 years)
Michael Hooper (42 + 4 years)
Will Genia (58 + 1 year)
Kurtley Beale (49 + 1 year)
James Slipper (2 years)
James O'Connor (44)
Tatafu Polota-Nau (50)
James Horwill (58)
Sekope Kepu (52)
David Pocock (45)
Wycliff Palu (54)
Quade Cooper (53)

top blokes are available for a move abroad without another cap or year, next group are close (some after W.C + warm ups like Horwill, Palu, Kepu and poss Cooper).

Need 60 caps AND 7 year contract with Australia (now I could have messed up what this means, in which case I give up, but i assume that is debut year until now?)

And here comes the massive English media rush for England to do something similar.

Australia needed it more than England IMO also I like the rules put up.

Personally i think it's a good long term solution, players need to do their ground work in the Aussie environment, and when the poachers come they don't' lose their 6-7 year investment completely.

This is probably a good move for Aus. Getting Gitteau back is massive.

Do we have any 60+ capped players??

Plus it persuades players to stay that seven years (maybe).

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

So assuming that Giteau will be selected, possibly Mitchell as well. How do we think they will line up ?
I'm guessing that it will be either Giteau inside of O'Connor or outside of Cooper/Foley. I would go for Giteau at 10 with O'Connor at 12, strong defence and brilliant attacking ability combined with kicking. AAC or Kuridrani at 13 with a back three of Mitchell, Folau and Speight would be quite dangerous.

This is great news for Australian rugby. Potentially Giteau will get a well-deserved recall. They have some much talent out of the country now. This policy of not picking players overseas was so daft.

Not as straightforward as you think. Before being selected to play for the Wallabies again, he still has to meet the criteria

► Must have been contracted to the ARU for at least 7 seven years prior to going overseas
► Must have won at at least 60 Wallabies caps (which take about 4 to 5 years)

If they do not meet the above two criteria,

► Must commit to an Australian Super Rugby team for two years minimum prior to selection

This last one will be a sticking point. Most players will not be able to come back and play a test season for the Wallabies then go back to their European Club, they will have to terminate their club contract or wait until it expires.

I think the Aussies have missed big financial opportunity here. What they should do is put all their Super Rugby players on 5-year contracts. Any player subsequently selected for the Wallabies must extend their contract a further 3 years. No contract, no play. If anyone want out of their contract to play for an overseas club, the club has to pay the ARU a hefty transfer fee.

I see Gits tweeted about it today. Didnt say much other than its a good move.

I think its a year to late for him to come back but stranger things have happened. He has 92 test caps according to google which I nearly fell over when I read that as I didnt recall him being around that long before he left. But I guess he was in the team for quite a few years.

Deans did us (NZ) a huge favour when he got rid of him.... Just quietly....

I felt like he was a very good player BUT he needed an atitude adjustment like alot of Aussie back line players tend to need... and Deans did the right thing but they should of got him back there within a year or so.

I think at the World Cup bringing back your best players is a great move. Giteau, in my mind, would bring experience and calmness to the Aussie backline. But the question is whether he would be a 10 or 12? Foley has had the 10 shirt for the past year, but then there is Cooper, Toomua and Lealiifano (I think the last two don't always play 10). Add onto that O'Connor who I think should be molded into 12 for Australia permanently.

10. Foley
12. Giteau

I think that's what has to happen, it means Cooper simply isn't needed barring injury. The less Aus rely on Cooper the better, he's more likely to lose a game on his own than win one. Consistency is what the Aussies require and this will allow it while still letting them play an expansive and skilled game.
