New Cycling season

@Old Hooker yeah I haven't heard amazing things about Trek. I really wanted my checkpoint for gravel/bikepacking but ended up with an emonda cause it was what was available in my size. Trek has been real aggressive in buying up local bike shops in the states so I'd have to travel a great distance to get a non trek.

also pavé is producing a great stage

The pave was always going to cause a bit of havoc. Loved Van Aert's attack yesterday - he's just a monster.

Pog up to 4th already. Yellow is his when he wants it - might not want to burn his team by having to defend it for too long.

Cobbles are a bit too much of a gamble for me in such an event. You can lose more time on a stage like this through no fault of your own than you'd lose in a two or three mountain top finishes.

Roglic's crash into a hay bale that had come onto the road is pretty tragic.

Slightly mixed feelings on that. Not all stages affect the race equally and I quite enjoy seeing riders using different skills to meet different challenges. It was just one of 21 stages and contenders who lost a little time will need to be more aggressive on other stages possibly leading to more exciting racing. I think I was OK with it, but if it had been wet I'd have been calling it out as an unnecessarily dangerous lottery.

Roglic is fated to never win this, you know the cycling gods are against you when taken down by a motorbike disturbed hay bale. Crashes happen for all kinds of reasons but this was a particularly unlucky one. But as a bad pun connoisseur I'll fess up to quite enjoying "The final straw for Roglic" headlines.

Pog really is quite something. Van Aert's a total entertainer who'll never die wondering, he'll be on super domestique duties for much of the rest of the race but no doubt we'll also see him chase a couple more stages.

Good to see Pidcock going well in his Tour debut. He's a hell of an all round talent who'd be talked about a lot more if not for Pog. Will be interesting to see how he goes in the high mountains.

most people would applaud van aert for bringing water bottles back to the team after his chase fell apart; but not I.
Why not?

Time wise he's still just about in reach, but Pog's really stamped his authority on the race. Doesn't miss the chance for a few seconds here or there, determined to beat Vingegaard in a sprint etc. His team doesn't seem that strong, but he doesn't really seem too bothered by it. He'll have a bad day somewhere along the line, the only question being whether it coincides with someone else's good day.

Did not disappoint. Possibly the finest stage I've seen in my puff. A stage so good that literally nobody mentions something like a three way sprint for KotM points.

Geraint was joking that Ineos and TJV riders were moving away to stop cycling behind Majka with his positive Covid test. Which rider had the worst performance of his life today? Oh, the guy who Majka is paid to ride directly infront of for hours each day! Just a theory.

but but but but the doctor said . . .

What a great stage that was today, I wasn't expecting Pogacar to break in the way he did even with missing some of his team mates.

Also I know it's only the minority but I'm getting a bit fed up of the antics of some of the spectators during this and every tour. Watching today's stage and I spent a fair bit of it muttering get off the road at the TV. Obviously the incident last year doesn't matter much to them.

He did. It did.

What. A. Stage.

The only consolation for Pog is that it was a crap day all round for Slovenia with Roglic now totally out of contention meaning Jumbo V won't be able to play another 2 card trick.

Many will be hurting after today. Will be interesting to see if there are more fireworks tomorrow or if the main contenders call a truce.

Ineos are now the only team with 2 riders in GC contention. Yates looked like he had more in the tank and Thomas rode smartly. Thomas can attack but is more of a defensive rider, but if Yates feels OK I can see him attacking for either his own benefit or Thomas.

yeah it's a bit much, especially with Paris-roubaix having an incident this year. These guys work their asses off years and people have no issue ruining their race.
