Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has decided to walk away from the national coaching job.Supersport.com has exclusively learnt the Bok coach will announce his intention not to have his coaching contract renewed later Thursday.
Meyer has informed the South African Rugby Union of his intention not to have his contract renewed when it runs out on 31 December this year.
Meyer did an about turn after announcing after the Springbok’s 3rd place finish at this year’s Rugby World Cup that he wanted to carry on â€" “to make a difference†as he put it.
But the public outcry, some of the vitriol directed at him and his family and the comments made by various rugby personalities about his coaching caused him to rethink.
Meyer spent some time away with his family over the past month where he discussed the position with them and according to supersport.com’s information, decided to put them first.
SARU’s General Council will still meet on December 11 but it will no longer be to review Meyer’s position as coach and the way forward. Instead they will need to get to work at finding a new Springbok coach to take the team forward.
More to follow.

Well, this was unexpected. Who will take over now ?

Lots of talk in the media has been Allistair Coetzee. News24 said the other day that he is really the only option left.

Not really unexpected.

I think he has done the right thing for himself here. Now he's not under scrutiny by any of the clubs/unions, and now the whole prejudice of Northern Unions in favour of him can be disregarded.

It just shows how down in the dumps SA Rugby is that Allister Coetzee is an option, and worse yet, the only option.

Oh sweet Lord not Allister Coetzee, what has he ever gotten right?

I'm a WP/Stormers supporter but I can't help but agree much as I appreciate what Tetie has done for us- and he did run a steady ship- I can't see him taking SA any place better. Not that other options fill me with any hope.

Eddie Jones must be in the running. I mean, he's taken England as far as he possibly can.......:D

Very good! How long does it take to get a visa to work in SA?

Has Meyer / the SARU taken the lead from the famous 9/11 memo suggesting that it's a good day to bury bad news?

Don't think that's good news. Clearly had plenty of downs to go with the ups but not a healthy position at all.

He organized that when he was supposed to coach the Stormers, so sorted there........not that we would ACTUALLY allow him into the country.

I'm now very interested to see what's going to happen next week at the SARU meeting.

It's clear that the WP Rugby Union is going to put AC's name forward as a replacement, and they've been on HM's case even before he was appointed.
