Messed up films ?

I would 110% stay clear of the Serbian Film unless you are tapped!

actually, I checked out some of it on youtube, and this isn't nearly a tough guy conversation, I'm the least macho there is, but it wasn't too bad...at least, not nearly as bad as I thought. I think Salo and Cannibal Holocaust are on another level...(again, only checked out scenes).
A Serbian Film is just way too over-the-top, and some scenes actually made me laugh they were so exaggerated. I do in fact believe some scenes are intended to be comedic. It's still very silly, totally unnecessary and contains concepts that are downright harmful...and, need I say it, 'harmful' is never justifiable.

Not really into horror films at all, I find gore and jumps fright type films to be a cheap excuse for what horror should be which IMO is when the film is able to create an atmosphere that makes you feel unsettled. I don't like them but i can appreciate a good sophisticated horror movie, something like the serbian film (which I've just read about not seen) is to me not even worth the time of day as it's just trying to shock you.

I don't like films that are disgusting for the sake of being disgusting , if there's no substance behind it save for shock value.

I don't watch that ****.

I don't watch horror films, particularly the "horror for the sake of horror." genre. i.e. plotless, storyless 90-120 minute collections of various graphic and gruesame ways for people to be dispatched.

I reached my limit with the "Alien" franchise, which, from what I understand, is a pretty tame example of the genre.

OK well since this has turned into a completely subjective thread, rather about people's taste or not for horror rather than the actual issue at hand in the original post, let me ask you forum people this:
what do you consider a good horror ? (film or book). Give me names.

My favourites (in no particular order):
Let Me In (Let the Right One In is great too, but I think LMI is more frightening)
Saw
The Descent
28 Days Later
Drag Me to Hell
Quarantine
Cry Wolf
The Exorcist (One of the few 'classic' horrors which is still actually scary)
Paranormal Activity (2/3 are the best, 1 is fine the first time but average after that)
The Uninvited (Haven't seen the original Korean film, A Tale of Two Sisters)
Rest Stop
Dead Silence
Final Destination (So much fun)
1408
The Mist

And then there are more humorous ones, which I don't really include in the same category, such as Tucker and Dale Vs Evil, Cabin in the Woods and Shaun of the Dead.

Everyone stop what they're doing and watch Kill List. It's not shock horror per-say, but it's the only film to have properly scared me in a very long time. It's directed by Ben Wheatley, so it's also got a really wicket sense of humour running through it. It has moments of real oppressive violence, but it's mostly the intensity of the atmosphere (Largely on the two central performances) that does it. The ending's both amazing and disturbing as well. God, what a film.

Ooh, sorry there fellas, forgot I even asked the question !

Invictus:
-
don't watch Quarantine, watch [REC] the real spanish version. Excellent horror, the last horror film to have actually scared me. Not an easy feat these days.
- The Descent was a very underrated, very well made horror. Not much substance, just very good scares, good atmosphere. A proof you don't necessarily need a philosophically calibrated screenplay to write and produce strong horrors.
- I'm sorry, I must interject: 1408 was a disaster.
- Yeah, gotta love those comedy, or somewhat tongue-in-cheek horrors. All three of those are very good. Well, 'Shaun' was alright...had its moments.

j'nuh:
good taste there, man !
I've kept hearing for the past aeons how amazing "Let the right one in" is...never happened for me...gotta make it happen at some point.
Braindead is so fkn bloody it's just simply ridiculous !! Of course that's exactly what it's supposed to be.....ridiculous. May I suggest "Black Sheep" to you, another NZ made funny horror, but much less bloody, but still entertaining.
Pan's Labyrinth was beautiful, I feel moved just thinking about the ***le. A little girl's imagination in a world of brute force and war.
Don't watch 'Cronos' though by the same director. Starts out amazing, awesome original plot, but the end result is just close to terrible. Don't get seduced by the IMDB synopsis.

Question: I've been reluctant about watching 'Deep Red', I'm assuming you mean 'Profondo rosso'. But I've found old Italian horrors way too over-the-top and simply humorously dramatic. Also, they age horribly past their decade. And Dario Argento (director) seems like the typical artsy fartsy Italian director...and ppl have actually called his stuff all that...but it's regarded as a horror classic at the same time. Your take ??

P.S.: huge Alien fan here. Prometheus may turn out to be one of the greatest trilogies in film history. So far that throne is occupied by the Matrix :D

Kill List was on TV last night, and I worry nobody took me seriously and watched it. It's so amazing and so disturbing. Now you'll all just have to hunt it out on DVD. It's well worth it.

J'NUH !!!! ANSWER MEEHHHHH !!!

never heard of "Kill List"....will look it up.

Enter the Void is excellent and messed up not in a gory way. Same director as Irreversible, Gaspar Noe.
Heard the August Underground series is awful in a way you might like.
Battle Royale was very good.

Any of the Evil dead movies are messed in the head (but amaxing)

Although the most disgusting disturbing movie I've ever seen and will never watch again (unless i'm forcing someone to watch it) was Lars Von Tiers "Anti-christ".
Know whats good for you and never watch it!

All great movies by the way
Anti christ is beautiful movie with a fantastic director and the old Evil Deads are classics (number two is my favorite)

Antichrist I was really looking forward to, was one of the most disappointing films I've ever seen. Absolute garbage, Lars von Trier is one of the most boring directors I know of. His 'art films' are awful.

I've read threads and threads about how disturbing the rape scene is ? Apparently anal :p I MEAN UH, oh my, how awful....

I just can't think of anything graphic enough of a rape scene between a man and a woman that would hurt me mentally...I can think of horrible scenes right now, but nothing that comes close to me cringing or grimacing at all...
Anyone ?

I liked it, but i dig the arty **** i suppose :( I think its one (and maybe the only) of lars directing gems

oh and hey btw, I'm not saying anything at all about my views on those horror-tinged topics in actual life. Obviously I'm just saying movie/art wise, certain things just seem to not shock me or get a peculiar reaction out of me.
We are, alas, the desensitized generation of ultra-violence through gaming, films and even music...but we ought to never lose sight of what's right and what's wrong.

- (in the background) Amen !

Thank you, yoe91...

Just saw Stoker last night. I picked it up simply because of Park Chan-wook and the fact that I loved Oldboy but was hugely disappointed TBH. It looked so atmospheric (and was to some extent) but I just found the actual development of the story underwhelming and relying too much on the gross factor (ITO social taboo like with Oldboy but Oldboy was executed masterfully IMO) and not having enough depth of content.

In general I don't mind some 'shock tactics' (there is a line though IMO and I think some things are better left implied rather than shown in full graphic detail) but if a film depends on them I will probably lose interest very quickly.
