Mathematical Possibilities

Haven't posted here for a while...

Perhaps its time to have a look at this.

It has come to my attention recently, that providing results go the way of any team in question - the entire top 7 still has a chance of getting a home final. The top 5 have every chance of getting 1st place. Is this the first time this has happened? I believe it is.

The Brumbies for example can take number 1 spot providing they take all points from Hamilton and not allow the Chiefs any, and if the Bulls lose by a very large amount. It's the same deal for the Crusaders, but should the Brumbies also win, it will come down to points differential.

So how do you think this years top 4 will look? And can you come up with any other unlikely scenarios??

My Top 4:
Bulls
Hurricanes
Brumbies
Chiefs

You think the Brumbies are going to beat the Chiefs by more than seven points and get four tries? You're very optimistic aren't you?

1. Bulls
2. Chiefs
3. Hurricanes
4. Crusaders

I don't think it will change from this week. I agree with you that this has to be one of the closest Super Rugby finish ever. It will be all decided by the last week and I am very much looking forward to it! :)

I'm a little less confident about the Brumbies pulling off an upset now that two of their best performing players of late - Fairbanks and Chapman, have been ruled out this week...

Otherwise, as long as the Brumbies can pull off a win, they're in with a decent chance of at least making the finals...

I feel like this is 2007 all over again... however, if the Brumbies had made the finals that year they could've gone all the way with the form they had in the last half of the tournament...

This year, if they had of just hung on to beat the Lions they would've been in a very good position right now... it's the loss that they'll regret having if they don't make the finals... personally, I'm quite happy with how they've ended up despite the setbacks they've had...

I'm not really fussed so long as the Hurricanes are in and the Crusaders are out.

Would have been good if the South Africans agreed to a top 6 finals system last year.

I think only 3 teams can win it, Chiefs,Bulls or Hurricanes, the 4th team will need luck.

I actually don't know about the Hurricanes. If I recall correctly, they've lost every match against the top four sides, except for the Crusaders.

Basically what the sharks need to get in is this.

The Blues have to preferably win against the Saders.
The Chiefs have to win against the Brumbies (which I expect them to do anyway)
and the Sharks have to win against the Bulls.

This permutation would meen the Sharks move into 4th on the log and the Bulls would drop down to third.
So we'd have both in the semis, but without home advantage for either.

The Sharks can also still make it into the semis if the Saders win, but would have to hope they only win with 4 log points.
Then the Sharks would have to do the seemingly impossible and beat the Bulls with a bonus point nad they would still go
into 4th as they have a better points difference than the Crusaders.

It seems like a long shot considering how "meh" they've been now for a while, but last year they did the same thing in the
last round robin game and completely destroyed the Chiefs to go into the semis.

hope that helps Stevo-O
;)

Yeah thanks it did, I must say the possibilities look better than I taught they would. I was thinking we'd have to beat a team by 90 points like the Bulls did in 2007

Yeah the sharks still have a reasonable chance at this, but you have to admit that they haven't looked like ***le contenders for the past few weeks anyway, so unless they suddenly find that elusive next gear
they're not going to win the cup this year.

Would have loved to see them do it though, would have gone nice with that brand new Currie cup trophy (which will be ours this year by the way ;) )

Haha not so sure about that one. With Brits and Mujati leaving you'll be the only 'big 5' union in SA with no Springboks in your front row. Its sad actually, both players are only in their mid-twenties...

Well, as much as i would have love to have 2 sides in the semi finals, i don't want the Sharks to win. The only thing that would do, is put both teams on a plane towards a quick exit. The Bulls, have been the better team this season, and if they finish at the number 1 spot, they get a home semi, and a home final.

I think that if the Bulls can win the competition at home. Loftus is way too hard for anyone to win at. Because I'm somewhat of a neutral, i want to see a South African team win, and because the Bulls have the best chance at the moment, i think the Sharks should lay down, and go away for now. They threw the season away themselves. After that loss to The Reds, it was all downhill from there...

Hopefully the Sharks beat the Bulls and we get a home semi. Then again, I wouldn't mind another go at the Chiefs.

Well the sharks are pretty much screwed, the Waratahs made it to the top 4, the Saders are on their way to winning the match and the Hurricanes should realistically beat the reds as well.

I'm sorry but I don't think we'll have both teams in the semis, so I'm hoping for a bulls win.

Ahh even when the Crusaders are crap they still make the finals. Please f*** off and die.

Ridiculous, the Sharks can obviously play with some amazing intensity and so they leave it for the very last game, if they had played even half as good last weekend they would be in the semis.

Bulls have home semi though, I'm hoping for all things good in the rugby world that they can knock the Crusaders out and get the home final.
