History has been made in South Africa as for the first time ever a non-South African team is champion of the Vodacom Cup. In just their second season of Vodacom Cup Rugby, Los Pampas XV have been crowned champions after completing a 14-9 victory over the Blue Bulls at Olën Park in Potchfestroom on Friday evening. The championship win means Los Pampas XV have gone through the campaign undefeated. The tournament is used by South Africa as a feeder to the Currie Cup and Super Rugby with many players every year going on to play as full time professionals at the top level. Argenitna´s participation and triumph is thus no small achievement. Rather it is an indicator of the strength of domestic rugby in Argentina as no player involved is based in Europe as a professional however a number of players will, without question, join foreign clubs for the 2011-2012 season and some already have contracts confirmed. The victory, against the Blue Bulls is also of high importance considering the Bulls top side are the current Super Rugby Champions.

The final was not the greated match of the Vodacom Cup as wet conditions dictated play and prevented the sort of running rugby that has been common throught the tournament. The games only try was scored by the Argentine side in the 25th minute of the first half. Los Pampas XV lead the game from start to finish with flyhalf Nicolás Sánchez slotting a penalty goal in the 11th minute. The teams try through inside centre, Agustín Gosio 14 minute latter would be the last time points were scored in the first half as Los Pampas XV led 8-0 at the interval. The Blue Bulls had the better of play in the early proceedings but were unable to convert their possession into points. Special merit was given to Los Pampas XV forwards Benjamín Macome, Maximiliano Bustos, Agustín Creevy and Julio Farías Cabello, who are all to train with Los Pumas as part of a 45 man squad for the June international matches vs the french Barbarians in Argentina.
The second half started well for the South Americans as in the 43rd minute, Nicolás Sánchez put Los Pampas XV ahead 11-0 with his second penalty goal. The Blue Bulls scored next as flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff kicked his first of three penalty goals in the 49th minute to cut the deficit to eight points. Two further penalties in the 62nd and 77th minute ensured the game would not be decided until the final whistle but the Argentine side remained in control of the game thanks to a 57th minute penalty to replacement flyhalf Santiago González Iglesias.

The five point victory should see many doors opened to Argentine rugby and to the players themselves. Thirteen of the players in the Vodacom Cup team are in consideration for a place at Rugby World Cup 2011. Many of these players have been selected ahead of players based in Europe to take on the French Barbarians in June. The current online debate of many as to whether or not Argentina should participate in Super Rugby has been emphatically answered in the most powerful way as Los Pampas XV celebrate their success and return home to Argentina as heroes. Clearly, Argentina has a lot to offer global rugby and the 2011 Vodacom Cup ***le further supports Argentina hosting Rugby World Cup 2023.

Congrats! I thought they would take i the final after they beat the Sharks quite convincingly in the semis, glad they beat the ******* bulls.

SupeRugby already? mhmm... perhaps it's a far, far better idea to let them play in the Currie Cup first. The transition from Vodacom Cup to Super rugby is a bit big isn't it? Let's not rush into things.

I agree that they should play in the currie cup first. However, it wouldn't be the same team that plays super rugby, with many of the professional Argentinians currently playing in Europe being drafted in, as well as the odd import. I think if it's feasible they should have a feeder team in the currie cup every year.

Where was Los Pampas based?

They were based in Stellenbosch I think

I said before they played the Sharks that a few of the performances were of Superugby level (they certainly could have given one of the Lions/ Brumbies/ early Cheetahs/ Rebels a hard game.
However, one must consider that the Bulls, Lions, Sharks, WP and Cheetahs put out fairly young teams in this comp, and pretty much every one of them got bullied physically by the Pampas, which obviously would not happen at a higher level

But none the less, they're handling was superb, and a much better effort considering how they were thrashed and looked shockingly out of depth last year

Is the Argentinian Rugby Union even bidding for the 2023 world cup?

I think it's good that the Argentines won in South Africa. before the tournament who had said they would win.

They showed many young players who can make much progress. Example: John Imhoff for his speed is a player to superugby. he plays wing.

PAMPAS players play in Argentina in amateur teams, this is very important and we must not forget when we think about them.

The Currie Cup would be the best for Argentina for a few years. and that their players do not leave Europe.

If zanzar helps Argentina to progress, they will have a great future.

I saw the game and was really surprised by the Level of the Argentineans ( I didn't watch so much Vodacom cup rugby this year).
Good stuff and looks promising for the RWC.

Well in my opinion the Pampas deserved the victory and was the only unbeaten team in the competition. The Blue Bulls lost four of their opening matches in comparison to the unbeaten Pampas team. The Blue Bulls did really well to get to the final with a young team and new coach to try and defend the Vodacom Cup. I would agree to let them have a go at the Currie Cup and see what they can accomplish. Looking at a team like Griquas that will have most of their regular players to start as most of them is with the Cheetahs at the moment.

The IRB have not yet announced the start of the bidding process for Rugby World Cup 2023 and for that reason no union has announced their intention to bid. However, hints have been made from the usual suspects. i.e. South Africa are to bid again. Scotland are to bid again with Ireland and Wales to subhost. Australia are considering but not sure. Italy are to bid as they did for 2015 and 2019.

Argentina have never bid but were in the process for 2015 and 2019 but pulled out to focus on getting Argentina into the 3N. Now that its confirmed and well have over a decade of Argentina in the Tri Nations before 2023 its clear that there is every reason for the UAR to indeed bid. - Hopefully my site helps!

in Argentina is said that they have an invitation to play in the Currie Cup next year ...
anyone know if this is true?

Could well be but I doubt they'd play in the first tier unless if they were added as a 9th invitational team; the other teams would take SArugby to court (with good reason) if they were dropped to make room. Maybe it would be best for all (Pampas as well; for building confidence through steady progression) if they did join the 2nd tier CC first in 2012 and could earn a chance to step up from there to the premier competition through promotion/relegation like all the other teams.
