Can I get a "HELL YEAH!!"? This is great. The kid is 19, we've lost yet another starting centres player. Just what we needed, someone who is going to stay there, and just, just hell yeah?!

Perenara
B. Barrett
J. Savea
J. Barrett
Laumape (who is killing it in the provincial right now)
Jane (I thought he was retiring from Super Rugby.. He's playing one more season)
NMS

Oh boy.

Gives us a season to find a right winger.

Or you go, NMS on the wing, in his AB position, and Jordie at 15, Proctor or Aso in at 12. I don't like that though.

Personally I'd go this:

9. Perenara
10. Barrett
11. Savea
12. Laumape (Beast, in great form, perfect replacement for Nonu)
13. Proctor (Very good player, a lot of pace and skill, great asset to the backline and ideal for 13. In good form also)
14. Jane
15. NMS

With Jordie on the bench. He's got a big future no doubt, but I don't think he is proven enough yet to warrant selection over any of those starters. I think it'd be good for him to be molded into the team from the bench as he is still young and will only improve and grow in confidence. Also, his versatility would make him a very useful and valuable bench player.

That being said, I'm ECSTATIC that he's come to the Canes and very excited to see him in the black and yellow for years to come! HELL YEAH!!

Laumape, I don't believe has that vision, it's not his thing... I'm pretty sure... I'll have to ask something who played him when he played Palmy Boys. But I think he was centre to Jason Emery's second-five. I've never rated Proctor. Ngani, would serve best playing centre, like he has been for Manawatu. You've got to go with the kid who has a lot more options than the two of them, even at his age. Especially playing second receiver to his brother. Yes, no doubt very exciting for the Canes, he will be something. He is going to be an All Black. People I know who are a lot more involved in coaching levels just say "he has it", his work ethic, he just wants it, and he's very talented.

Bro, funny you say that, because I went to school with him (Laumape). He played 2nd five for the 1st XV right through from year 10, Emery was centre. He played there for NZ schools too. He's always been a 2nd five and that's actually where he has played most of his games for Manawatu this year.
I see him as very much in the same mold of a young Nonu. Definitely work to be done on distribution and finer skills, but the raw talent is there and I think he could develop into a very good long term 2nd five.
As for Jordie, no doubt he's got incredible potential and has all the skills. I agree he'll for sure be an All Black down the line, but for now he's still a 19 year old newbie and I think the bench is his place until he develops a bit more into the player we know he will become.
I seem to rate Proctor more than you do. He did a great job for us last season prior to injury and I see no reason why he wont continue to do the same this season. He's nothing special but he has good speed and good skills and plays well, so deserves the 'Canes 13 jersey IMO (at least for now).

Yeah, was trying to remember. They just said that they were impossible to play, lol.

I know Nonu wasn't seen as a typical second-five, and obviously, became one of the better 12s in the world. But I've always liked my second-fives to have that ability, that they could slot into play first-five. The vision, the tactical kicking, the great passing ability. I've just felt that Ngani will better fit centre, that way, he can focus on his running, where he's lethal, and just running through/over dudes. This Super season will tell us tbh. Hard to tell with his first season back from league.

soo... safe to say I was right then? Laumape being used at 12 and doing awesome, Proctor at 13 and Jordie as a utility

Ah... One of those guys eh. Hurricanes score 140 points in two games, and then I literally saw Laumape and Proctor mentioned like twice versus a good team.

As I said, I still don't think Laumape has the vision. I'm old school, I prefer good 10s slotting into 12, not fullback.

Sooo are the Highlanders a good enough team for you? Or is Ben Smith a good enough defender? I know I'm harping on lol but I just rate Ngani that much. I genuinely think he may be the future ABs 12. I will say though that Jordie has exceeded my expectations and has slotted into the line-up nicely. It'll be interesting to see though where he plays once NMS, Jane etc are all fit. I suspect he'll go back to the bench as I originally suggested.

Alright, I think you've got me wrong a little here. I see you're obsessed with Laumape, every little thing he's done right so far, you quickly make a post on here. I like Laumape, I know he's talented, I'm happy he's had his one little "coming back from league" season, and now he's going for a black jersey.

But can I ask you how Laumape was in those positions?

Jordie Barrett, cross kick, as a second receiver... To Laumape. Do fullbacks kick like that? No. Do second-fives? Yes. Could Laumape have made that kick on the fly like that? Don't make me laugh. If anything, last night highlighted how it should be... And that's B. Barrett/Savea/J. Barrett/Laumape/Aso/NMS.

The coach at the end of the match even said how Jordie still wants the 12 jersey. How long do you feel he'll be held out for, with Nehe holding fullback when fit? Proctor is the one that will miss out, and I don't care about that.

And this, bar Vince Aso's play... Was the line-up I suggested originally.

The NZ media is also hyping him up so much after last night... It's only one game. I know he's 19, but ****, relax New Zealand.

it would be hard not to hype Jordie Barrett. I think hes the most promising young back to come onto the scene since Carter. his elevation through the ranks certainly beats out Cruden & Beauden who both arrived with a lot of hype. And hes just getting better and better. I think he looks better in super rugby than he did in age grade. And he just looks like that kind of player who will transition to test rugby the same way.

Hurricanes aside I hope he is developed as a fullback. I believe after 10 that the next important position in the backs is 15 and his height and skillet would be a huge asset there... and we do eventually need someone to take over from Ben Smith.

We have a logjam of players fighting over midfield (Crotty, Moala, Fekitoa, SBW, ALB, etc... Plus a few really promising young guys). We lack depth at 15 Since Dagg has proven to be much more effective on the wing. Currently our best #2 fullback is our #1 first five... I think Jordie will be selected for the AB's this year and his main job will be cover 15 and serve a bit of an apprenticeship under Ben Smith.

(I'm a bit late, didn't see this reply :p)
I don't think our fullback stocks are too bad (Smith, Dagg, Mckenzie, NMS, And now Duffie and Jordie who are looking good.) TBH I'm not sure where I wanna see him long term. I do like the idea of him at 2nd 5 and think it'd be cool to have a play-maker type there who also has an element of x-factor and nice offloading game, but the again his height (as you suggested), speed, defence and kicking game all bode well for a successful career at fullback, so it's a tough one.
I'd like to see him at 2nd 5 before I make a call on which is best for him long term but for now at least I think fullback is his best bet given the riches in the midfield, and besides he has a lot more freedom from the back to do his thing and develop his game which I think is good at this stage. Plus I obviously view Ngani as the new permanent Canes 12, and maybe even ABs (probs once SBW moves on), so I guess fullback it is for Jordie for now.
