Ireland v South Africa

Don't even start; I mean what's the point of bringing up one isolated instance in an entire match of lets-fall-over-and-see-if-we-get-away-wi't-again or whatever else. Take it on the chin as Ireland took their opportunities and we didn't look up for a game to be honest.[/b]

I'm not starting anything. I just want a better understanding of what happened. I get really confused at some of the calls. I'm not blaming the ref in any way. Besides, he blew some bizarre calls both ways. Morne Steyn gets pinged for a high tackle when he went for the ball, but Pieterson nearly decapitates Bowe and nothing happens? Weird.

I was severely ****** off by them lazy runners after that incident. Stopped a certain try. But if the ref doesn't see it what can ya do. Thank god it didn't affect the outcome, i would have been disgusted.

Fantastic result for Ireland - really enjoyed the match actually. The Irish forwards are something else at the moment - and there just seems to be a massive amount of belief in that squad.

Have you guys peaked to early for the WC maybe? If the WC was tomorrow I reckon you'd be silly to say they wouldn't be in with a shout (braced for abuse)!

I actually thought we werent hectic over the autumn... our scrum was terrible by international standards and we were destroyed at the breakdown by both Springboks and Aussies and untill both are worked on and vastly improved then we have no chance of competing at the very highest level... As the man above me stated.... the foundations are set..

Wouldnt say we've peaked at all. The foundations are in place, that is all.[/b]

Agree. The foundations have been there for 5 years - consistent good performance. The 6Nations was when Ireland realised they were capable of being world class. This autumn was where Ireland realise they are world class.

2010 must bring a great 6N performance - if they lose in Paris or London so be it, but they can only afford to lose once. They then play New Zealand and Australia on tour... 1 win would be a great result from that tour.

Then comes the autumn, and Ireland should hope to beat both NZ and SA again. Then 6N 2011... another good performance and Ireland have all the foundations in place to go into the world cup 2011 with hopes (and not unfounded ones either) of winning the world cup.

If only it were that simple mate.... we are still 2-3 top forwards from being competitive with SH teams in cold face war... When i see the handling skills of the australian and All Blacks front row as an added bonus to the fact they can scrum well makes me wonder. We need a replacement for Hayes and its a bit early to pass judgement on cian healy..he is great around the paddock but got mangled in the scrum... We dont have an open side comming through unless people want to see Sean O Brien or Neill Ronan (who looks too small).... so unless these areas can be remedied, i predict we have a fair distance to go yet!

the problem with the scum on Saturday and against the Aussies was not down to Healy, all the power of the scrum was coming through the centre, targeting Flannery, who has always been a mediocre scrummager, Best definitely would have started this Autumn had he been fit. Once du Plessis came on and Smit went back to prop we didn't have any major issues.

Healy gave away a few penalties over the course of the internationals... Flannery doesnt have this problem when Horan is playing... but i agree Best is a better scrummager!!!

Most, if not all of Ireland's problems at the scrum come from John Hayes having his head shoved up his hole by anyone remotely competent at propping

the fact that penalties were given away doesn't mean a jot as the refs are generally guessing when it comes to the front rows. Flannery also hasn't come up against a hooker the size of Smit who has added a couple of stone since moving to prop.

Ireland need a tighthead before they can be considered World Cup contenders. John Hayes starting with Tony Buckley on the bench doesn't fill me with confidence.

A proper openside wouldn't hurt either, Wallace is an excellent player who does good work on the deck, but he is a 6/8, his main strengths are his pace, power and hands. If we can bring a guy like Willie Fallon into the side for 2011 we would be doing well, but you can't not pick one of Wallace, Heaslip and Ferris if they are all fit, all fantastic players.

in other news the claims of gouging against Healsip have been thrown out according to RTÉ

Paul O'Connell said before the game South Africa were not dirty players, but honest, fair and hard. Guess we can scratch the honest bit so?

Where is the doosness (dickheadness) coming from? PDiv?

I mean seriously, they are making the whole SA look like **** now.

Disappointed, rugby is the only thing we can be proud about.

Pdivvy must have stepped in, reminded everyone that this is rugby not ballet, and gouging is fine

Agree with all of that. Plus didn't really see any centre combinations or good skip passing - Kidney's very conservative in that area, but the players seemed to want it in the opening part of the matches and screwed it up.

Mind you, if we're talking about foundations the scrum is the main one and we're unlikely ever to be world class in that. That's the kind of thing England do, but their builders can't figure out this new fangled plumbing. If you need the electrics done, call the French, but make sure your insurance covers it. Italy will build you a decent brick shithouse but forget to leave a way out. And Wales are great at the gardening - pretty flowers and water features tralala. Scotland don't bother with this fixed abode stuff - they live under a bridge and rob passing Australians.
