Immortality "20 years away"

According to scientist Ray Kurzweil.

Immortality only 20 years away says scientist - Telegraph

The 61-year-old American, who has predicted new technologies arriving before, says our understanding of genes and computer technology is accelerating at an incredible rate.

He says theoretically, at the rate our understanding is increasing, nanotechnologies capable of replacing many of our vital organs could be available in 20 years time.

Mr Kurzweil adds that although his claims may seem far-fetched, artificial pancreases and neural implants are already available.

Mr Kurzweil calls his theory the Law of Accelerating Returns. Writing in The Sun, Mr Kurzweil said: "I and many other scientists now believe that in around 20 years we will have the means to reprogramme our bodies' stone-age software so we can halt, then reverse, ageing. Then nanotechnology will let us live for ever.

"Ultimately, nanobots will replace blood cells and do their work thousands of times more effectively.

"Within 25 years we will be able to do an Olympic sprint for 15 minutes without taking a breath, or go scuba-diving for four hours without oxygen.

"Heart-attack victims â€" who haven't taken advantage of widely available bionic hearts â€" will calmly drive to the doctors for a minor operation as their blood bots keep them alive.

"Nanotechnology will extend our mental capacities to such an extent we will be able to write books within minutes.

"If we want to go into virtual-reality mode, nanobots will shut down brain signals and take us wherever we want to go. Virtual sex will become commonplace. And in our daily lives, hologram like figures will pop in our brain to explain what is happening.

"So we can look forward to a world where humans become cyborgs, with artificial limbs and organs."

Like this you mean?

Awaiting the Christian Fundamentalist shitstorm as they claim we can not play God.

And that sounds like a load of crap. Just twenty - twenty-five years? Sure.

I don't believe for a minute that all of that will be possible, but let's say immortality (in that you could live forever should you not throw yourself into a woodchipper) becomes possible.

What happens to the world? There are already 6 billion people here. So, the planet can easily handle 15 billion, 50 billion, 100 billion? The population issue will have to be addressed one day.

Engineering to not need food and robot legs that can do all the jobs of transport, all we'll need is a box to chuck our stuff in, no sleeping needed.

Although who would want a bunch of 80 year olds with a body of a 20 year old, it would be far too wierd I would think, meeting your nannys school friend who just got the surgery done at a bar and taking her home at the end of the night? Too wierd.

Whether or not we eat, we'd still need to eventually use all the earths resources for more and more people to live here.

Futurologists are a weird bunch. They are paid, and paid well, to predict things like this, but it just sounds so unlikely and ridiculous. The best part of it is that by the time this stuff is due to happen, they've probably made enough money to retire 5 times over and have long since buggered off!

It's just a bit too heavy on the amazingly unbelievable side. Immortality will come a long time after the first person reaches 150 not out.

You forgot money in this little equation. This technology will probably cost hundreds of thousands of $$, so obviously normal people like you and me will probably die of cancer anyway. Only the super rich will have access to this.

Immortality sucks you'll have to watch all the people you love die and live with the pain stuff that. Load of crap thou I mean if anyone can remember the program "Beyond 2000" they said we'll be flying around in cars and living in space after the year 2000. Come year 2000 and we were more worried about a stupid Millenium bug that didn't even exist.

On the other hand at least I'll probably live long enough to see New Zealand at least win one more Rugby World Cup.

The most amusing thing for me is that the gy is 61, if what he says happens, chances are he'd have died beforehand

What if they're all immortal?

The planet will become like an over-stuffed sock drawer full of humans.

Run at full sprint for 15 minutes eh...I guess rugby will be being played at a quicker pace in 30 odd years if that is true...

Honestly, does anyone even slightly think that something like that will really happen? I mean before or after the flying DeLoreans?

Man has been having virtual sex since the beginning...it's called ************. Someone should really explain that to this "genius" doctor.

But after all this, if it was to happen.. we'd still not have peace. We'd still need oil!

I think I'll pre-order a set of robot legs. Maybe they'll throw a set of robo-balls in for free!

Meh. I was hoping they could figure it out now so that Matfield and Botha can play forever.

Gay scientists.
