fairly interesting, kinda had the feeling something was going to happen in this area. strange now the time has actually arrived.

the last few years have seen a massive push in this area and the way the teams run is becoming more and more a business above anything else. you would have to think this is just the beginning as well.

the question i have is how much autonomy will they have? can they go to CCC or Nike and get a better kit deal? can they sell the front of the Jersey to ANZ or Westpac (other banks)? if they are constrained to the same deals the NZRU has signed i'm not sure what the point is

"The new owners will have the power to select players, market their teams and promote matches, retaining ticketing and sponsorship revenues."
I think that says they can do the things you mentioned.

The interesting part is "The NZRU will retain ownership of the team ‘‘brands’’ and pay players and coaches from broadcasting revenues." So, they can select any player, but he'll be paid by the NZRU? It would be interesting to know how this will work, will the NZRU have a word to say in the selection (like... i won't pay that player, so don't select him)?

Would this be likely to happen to other NZ franchizes? I have to say I've always thought that part (however small) of NZ being so dominant on the test arena has been the way in which the SR teams have effectively been run by the NZRU.

I think it's happened to the Crusaders as well. I agree about NZ's domination having to do with the relative control NZRU has over all things rugby here. I wonder what this will mean in the grand scheme of things.

I hope its a running rugby fan that bought the club and not someone that just want to make money, like the Yankee Glazers family that bought Man UTD and fcked the football up 6 love...

The yankees know fokol about football... they just in it for the money at the cost of beautiful football! thank god SAF is still the coach otherwise united would have gone under...

I just hope and pray its not the case with the Canes!!!

anyone know any details of the new owners...

only piece of mind we can have is asking why the canes? the most distructive running team in NZ... why buy them too play crappy rugby :?

maybe the new owner has got something special for us ;)

The majority owner is the Wellington Rugby Union now, so I wouldn't expect much change. We'll still mainly ignore Taranaki, Manawatu and Hawkes Bay <_<.

it has happened to the Crusaders too and i read their is a deal on the table for the blues althought not finallised
