After sifting through a few controllers in 2024. Here's the only one I've managed to actually enjoy with two players on the PC download from abandoned ware. It's a PS4 controller. You need to get x2 PS4 controllers and it has to be wired into the USB. Check in the blue tooth settings to see if it's connected. Start up ea rubgy and it should work nicely.
So if you're in new Zealand you can purchase the power play PS3 wireless with cord from warehouse for 30 dollars and that works well but not as good as the PS4 original controller.
Note: Xbox series is terrible for this game
Also if you're still interested in looking for compatible controllers you can go to rugby file and locate Data and in that file is a file called controllerconfig. It's a excell spread sheet format. In there is a list of controllers that will work.
For some reason the PS3 from warehouse works is that windows must emulate it when it's plugged in that's just my observation. Maybe the same for PS4 too. If you can alter the excell spread sheet you maybe be able to map any controller .

Any thoughts 🤔

Forgot to mention that xpadder works well but the issues with xpadder it only emulates a keyboard for the controller so when you decide to use xpadder you have to move keyboard in only for controller to work in the game. So long story short no two players option.
