I'm pretty sure i know what people are going to think about this but thought i would through it out there and ask for thoughts

would be a hugh change if they go ahead and they have confirmed they will be making a huge announcment on monday, these rumours have to come from somewhere so if not a change in colours what else could they be announcing?

Interesting stuff. Not sure the Highlanders moving further away from the unions is the best idea. Even though the Highlanders have had a good year, in my experience, no one really cared how they got on. Most of my friends are bigger fans of the NPC teams than the super teams. Bold move but time will tell if it's the right move. All I know is that when I watched the Highlanders it was in a half empty/full stadium.

If they are going to change, why not Tartan :p ... actually, I think the colour of the jersey's are fine as it is

Not sure that I agree with the crowd comment ... the home games look pretty good this season to me.

... Interesting comment about those that follow the NPC Vs the Super teams ... I follow both, but I think theres more following the Highlanders this year, because they are doing well. Southland's ITM cup team has a good following, but they performed well over the last few seasons - not sure if the same can be said for the Otago ITM cup side ... and as for North Otago ... North Otago just rocks :D

all i know is there are quite a few people who still dont follow the highlanders. One of the reasons several southland friends hav told me was they play in blue in gold (they didn't wear the maroon kit whilst playing in invers which was a trick missed i think) and although unoffically are still refered to as the otago highlanders by many.

it could be a real chance to start fresh and build a following again...but getting more Maroon on it to represent the dominant union would be the most logical option, blue and maroon stripes like the stormers jersey would be sweet

and the second part of my question? if not a colour change then what could this big anouncement be?

Best. Call. Ever.

Anyways.... I agree re: Highlanders crowd numbers. Though over the last few years the crowd numbers have been disappointing, they have been reasonable this year, with an average of just over 9,000 people per game (including the two games in Rugby Park Invercargill). These crowd numbers are only just below what the Hurricanes are averaging (just under 11,000), and about the same (or possibly even higher) than the Chiefs have been getting for their home games (though I couldn't find crowd number for many of their games, so I'm not sure). The crowd for the match between the Highlanders and the Crusaders was probably the biggest crowd I've seen for a Super Rugby match in Carisbrook for probably 10 years. Hoping there will be a good crowd this week v. the Lions, but it sounds like only 7500 tickets have been sold so far...

Yeah fair call about the choice of colours for the games in Invercargill, and how Southland supporters feel in general, particularly as they currently have the better ITM cup side in terms of results

It really annoys me as well that people still refer to the New Zealand super franchises by putting a region before it, as they all have multiple regions making up each sides ... being a Crusaders supporter from the Nelson region, I object to them still being referred to as the "Canterbury Crusaders" in some quarters, but i'm okay with them playing in predominantly Canterbury colours - it's more about what they do for their regions in terms of games and player development, than the colours that they play in.

Best. Call. Ever.

Yeah, I was born in North Otago, and had a standing bet for a couple of jugs with a good friend of mine, whenever North Otago played Wairarapa Bush ... lots of free beer for me :D

The crowds looked quite good on TV, but obviously looks can be deceiving ... maybe the numbers are down (in general) because people are saving their money for the RWC

Great place to be born :D

Hey i think the change of the Highlanders jerseys would be a good thing,The Hurricanes need a jersey change more then the Highlanders.I want to see some black and white in there somewhere.

I like the look of the new jersey in honesty. I've been waiting for a green team. The current Highlanders jersey is alright, but it is more blue, than the traditional maroon, and I'm sick of blue teams. I don't know if the change will be liked by others (especially many of my mates with old Highlanders jerseys), but I quite like it. Just as long as the away strip isn't that depressing grey/silver that Adidas seem to love.

Great place to be born :D

and a great place to visit, went to the 97 NPC final in Oamaru and although the result was not the best it was a great day out, invited into the aftermatch etc, good times

yeah, was a bit annoyed both the Force and the Rebels went with Blue when they joined

This whole green thing is kind of coming out of left field really. I seriously hope that this idea of distancing themselves from Otago, North Otago and Southland rugby is eventually seen to be the mistake that many fans in all three provinces will almost certainly feel it is.

I say that and green is my favourite colour! :D

I like it, there are too many Blue teams (Force didn't help). With the Highlanders on the rise, this new Jersey will stand out and help push their brand forward.

Have to agree. Hopefully it will not be a mistake, but when I was there no one really cared. However saying that the Highlanders were pretty unsuccessful and you know what they say about a team that is winning, it breeds success on and off the field. I hope it does work out but many of my friends already feel alienated from a team that has more Southland players than ever.

a change is confirmed, something still doesn't sound right about doing it half way through the season and no Marron at all when the southland ethics are such a big part of the current ethos

im still expecting a twist like green as the base colour (to differenciate us) but blue marron and gold playing a big part

That being said IF they do do a jersey as described in the artical it will never fly next year as there has been a pretty big outcry

Well, that hasn't stopped the Hurricanes playing in that dreadful silvery grey that they play in ther away strip. Frankly, the jerseys for the New Zealand franchises are constantly pretty disapointing. I'd get rid of that terrible silver and replace it with a nice, solid white.

Super Rugby could cetainly do with a team in green, but I'm not convinced the Highlanders are the best fit for it.

I always thought that green would be a great away/alternate colour for the Hurricanes.

If I was doing the hurricanes jerseys, I'd use yellow and black (Wellington/Taranaki) the home strip, and green white and black for Hawkes Bay & Manawatu as the away.

Agreed. looking at a fantasy rugby team it is almost always a horde of blue (Stormers, Blues, Bulls, Highlanders, Waratahs, Force and a bargain Rebel) with a few red jerseys in between for your Crusaders and Reds (not mentioning the bargain Lions player.) In fact everyone apart from the Cheetahs/Chies/Hurricanes/Sharks are either blue or red. Should the Kings ever join Super rugby they'd probably be in red as well!

The problem is that it's tricky to find teams that can naturally move to a green strip.

I suggested that the Hurricanes away strip could be a green, black and white strip because that would mean that all the top-rank teams in the region get some representation in the colours.

But I can't find any reason to change the Blues, Chiefs, Crusaders or Highlanders colours -home OR away strips - besides replacing all the much-despised silver with white.

similarly, I can't find fault with Queensland, New South Wales, or Melbourne. they all wear well established state colours. You could suggest the Western Force could change to some shade of yellow with black (being the state colours of Western Australia).

Even though you'd never see a Force v Hurricanes game with both teams in yellow, I'd love to see both sides having yellow and black home jerseys, with the Hurricanes in a lemon-yellow, and the Force in a darker yellow (such as mustard yellow).

Are the colours of the Brumbies the territory colours of the ACT? They might be an option for a green strip, but it might have to be a dark shade to distinguish them from the lime-green Raiders in the rugby league competition.

I don't know what latitude there is with the South African teams for green teams, but it's a shame that the Cheetahs don't make more use of orange - THAT is a distinctive colour in Super Rugby! (especially with teal alongside it)

I remember that the Stormers went through a few colour schemes in the past.. But I can't recall them trying green.
