Heineken Cup 2013/14 Pool 6, Round 2

anybody watching USAP Edin ? Scots just scored an awesome try, Visser...

What a try by perpignan, you guys are missin oooooot !!!

USAP salvage some pride on Sunday after Sombre Saturday, can Clermont make it Sunny Sunday, although at the moment we are under a massive storm that has been going on all day!!! Raining Cats, Dogs and Britsh Referees !!!

Didn't make it at Leinster, went to Rotherham (a lot of our guys end up over there for whatever reason), Cardiff gave him a shot due to his cheapness. He's done very well over there and could very easily be offered a contract back in Ireland. I reckon Ulster could use him the most.

We've enough backrowers on the books as it is...

Henry, Doyle, Williams, Wilson, Diack, Henderson... all here for a few years yet and all good enough for game-time. Of that bunch, only Williams is NIQ.

Also got young Conor Joyce coming through over the next year or two, so I don't think a move here would benefit Copeland or Ireland [as he wouldn't get the gametime needed].

Yeah I don't really see how we need another backrow? Forgot about Ferris too, but I guess his situation is a bit hopeless now.

The word is "PASSION" played it for the best part of 25yrs, club tresorier in France while in the later days of playing, and now heavily involved in the TOP 14 SINCE 2006, so its PASSION PASSION AND MORE PASSION, but just a bit less this morning (PASSSION that is), when i had to write my article for the site.

Glaws have impressed me in round 1 and 2 of the Eurocup. I don't see them getting out the pol but they may have already dealt a blow to Perpignan and pose a threat to Munster at Kingsholm. Munster fans will be pumped for the round 5 match up. That's what rugby's about!

Edinburgh, having derailed Munster in round one are another side that can ruin someone's party. A neutral's dream pool!

I read on www.planetrugby.com 's HEC team of the week that he had a good game (having made their select XV for the week). Very glad for him and that he made the move as the Lion's (Gauteng's Golden Lions) were underutilizing him and trying to force him into being a centre (due to their lack of centres and oversupply on the wing) whereas he is purely a wing IMO.

^ fantastic performance from the Saffa winger...
I know about the whole SANZAR nations can't select a guy who plays abroad - but wouldn't the Boks want to select that dude ?? I mean, just based on pure athleticism, power and sheer speed...I KNOW this guy would definitely help the Boks out.

South Africa does allow for foreign based players to play for the Bokke (recently Guthro Steenkamp, Ruan Pienaar, FdP, Francois Louw) and there will probably be more if you consider that all of Morne Steyn, Zane Kirchner, Juandre Kruger and Chiliboy Ralepele have this year signed for NH clubs though we hope HM will use his discretion and not select most of these players almost all of whom we can actually do without but he is a conservative coach and puts a lot of stock in 'experience'. SARU does however ask- as a suggestion- that the coach uses local players firstly if the local players are near enough up to standard.

On Mjekevu, well he is 'one that got away' because of a number of circumstances even though he was identified and played for the junior Bokke mostly to do with the fact that he was at the Lions hen they were really under the cosh. The entire team's defense was brough into question but I think that is a coaching/structure issue more so than the individual players, he was pushed at too hard a pace rather than nurtured IMO, he was injury prone (IMO due to being too young and forced into a higher level- and out of position- too early), played out of position and then to top it all off the Lions were relegated out of Super rugby. Can't blame him for moving on. There are a number of talented guys that just don't end up making it for a lot of reasons mostly not their fault.

Even though SA do allow foreign players to a certain extent I cant see him getting in. Simply because he is an unknown factor. For instance how do we know he can do the above against a team like the Crusaders? We simply don't know and can't compare his game against the same opposition like we can with someone locally like Gio Aplon. No offense meant to Edinburgh but that defense looked rather lacklustre. The same goes for a player like Rory Kockott. The foreign guys tat tend to get a call are the guys that have 'put in the hours' locally and have been established test players for the most part and have proven themselves prior to going overseas. I wouldn't surprised to see someone like Jaque Fourie get in but would be if one of Mjeevu, Kockott, Stander or such get a look in. There will be a lot of players slipping through the net and well, no use in crying about it.

Mjekevu was on trial with us in 2012, didn't hear much about him to after he was released he seemed critical of our selections of young players. Maybe we wanted to persist with the players we brought up from U19, U21. We weren't really gasping for wings either.

O/T but do you think Meyer should look at selecting SA-based players over foreign ones?

I really do think there should be a heavy bias in favor of locally based players long term though I don't think it's as big of a total wreck waiting to happen like some people forsee. Also there should at least be some sort of limit; IMO the selection of all of Steenkamp, Louw, Pienaar, FdP n top of the departing players mentioned was a bit OTT considering Pienaar was naff in any case, Kirchner is limited, so to Juandre Kruger (though TBF Du Toit was injured, the 2 FvdMerwes also limited and Bekker was off in Nippon). M Steyn found something akin to a purple patch but I still think we would have been better served giving Lambie more responsibility rather than furthering Steyn's.. legacy. Steenkamp is good but is he that much better than what we have here? I also think something holding HM back to a certain extent is his tendency to for 'Bulls first' because thats what and who he knows. Greyling being the biggest of the blunders in that regard but I am sure Kirchner, Basson, FvdMerwe and some others should never have gotten as much chance as they did. Look at Vermeulen now- on fire- but he wouldn't have gotten a look in if Spies hadn't gotten injred while trying to stay out of sight. But who knows?!

yeh, I'm sorry I spoke too fast and not clearly enough. I know obviously South Africa can still use Habana or Steyn or whoever else, I meant like they'd rather not get a guy who's been playing abroad too much. Like surely Kockott would be a big addition to the squad, at least on the bench, but they won't pick him because he's Top14 now. Of course essential players like the ones we've mentioned would still return in Bok colors...

and right, no use in "crying about" all those potentially interesting players slipping away from the Boks' grip, because S.A. is deep and very resourceful. Obviously they won't fall apart because they don't have Kockott or that Mjekevu winger....
but looking at his strength and speed, surely he would be a fine addition to almost any team, and besides Habana I don't see anyone vastly superior to his ability, whether we've seen him play in SR or not, the guy's got pace and athleticism...surely an interesting fit for the Boks potentially...
