In theory communism is the closest system to being perfect. You don't have to pay for school or medical expenses. The problem is that most communist states become corrupt and the people end up becoming oppressed. It has it's downsides like state run economy and the fact that one cannot gain personal wealth like in a capitalistic state. But the benefits are also undeniable. 100% employment, no medical or schooling costs. This is of course the base of the system. If run in the proper way communism is a great system, but it is also a system liable to be abused.
A nationalised economy is bad, especially when they start to subsidise parts that don't work. When Labour nationalised certain industries to maintain high employment in the late 40s he did just that. But to keep it that way, he didn't close mines that cost the government money, and instead threw money from other areas that did make money at them, which had serious problems after in the 80s, which was only resolved by privatisation and mass unemployment aswell as cutting public sector money.

I'm of the few that you should have a privatised economy that makes money, for both the individual and the state to provide for the individual.
