This is not totally unexpected news, as the signs were there, that Matt Giteau would not feature in Robbie Deans's world cup plan, but it looks like he has lost out to Berrick Barnes.

... Barnes has had a real problem with concussion this year, so it's a bit of a risk including him in the squad.

Anyway, here's the Sydney Morning Herald article

That'll be all ... Matt Giteau has been told he won't be going to the World Cup.

MATT GITEAU'S Test career was officially ended last night when the playmaker was told by Wallabies coach Robbie Deans he wasn't required for the World Cup.

Berrick Barnes has earned a place ahead of Giteau in Australia's 30-man squad - to be announced this morning - and the most pressing question to be answered will be who misses out between back-rowers Ben McCalman and Radike Samo.

Wycliff Palu ticked the boxes at yesterday's fitness test at Coogee Oval, and is a certainty for the squad, leaving McCalman to jostle with Samo for the final place in the forwards. The others who trained in the rain yesterday - Tatafu Polota-Nau, Drew Mitchell, Rob Horne, James Slipper, Dan Vickerman and Nick Phipps - are also expected to be named.

Winger Lachie Turner and second-rower Sitaleki Timani will likely miss out to Waratahs teammates Mitchell and Vickerman.

Deans all but confirmed those who trained yesterday would be chosen, saying the players would not put personal agendas before the team. ''If they're not right they're not going to promote themselves in the interests of the team,'' Deans said at Sydney Airport before heading to Coogee. ''That's where these guys are at. They want the best not only for themselves but the group as well, so we're just catching up and signing off that they're good to go.''

Giteau was told he would not be part of the squad shortly after landing in Sydney from South Africa.

As the small group of players required for fitness tests gathered on Coogee Oval, Giteau confirmed his axing by posting on Twitter: ''Thank u ballboys, thank u linesman! That's it.'' He added later: ''Really wanna thank everyone for the support! Was a huge honour to get the chance to represent my country as often as I did.''It has been suspected for some time that Giteau was out of favour, and when he was dropped following Australia's shock loss to Samoa, the 92-Test veteran faced an uphill battle to regain a spot.

Deans said players had been kept informed of their status throughout the year. ''We've already had conversations with them, so it's not as if it's the first time we've spoken, but there's no easy way to deliver bad news,'' he said.

Giteau, 28, is headed to France next season, and unless there is a spate of injuries to playmakers in the next two months, he will finish his career in Australia as the third most-capped back in Wallabies history behind George Gregan and Stephen Larkham.

Barnes was not required to undergo fitness testing despite his battles with concussion and footballer's migraine because he has come through four club games without a problem. He will be an option at inside-centre, and will be Quade Cooper's back-up as five-eighth.

Deans said while many players chosen would be under injury clouds, all of those named in the 30-man squad would be fit for the first World Cup match against Italy on September 11. ''There's some blokes who have history with us; we know what they're capable of,'' Deans said. ''You consider all of those factors. That can be an advantage over someone … who we haven't seen at that level.''

The injured players will get some match fitness when they play for the Australian Barbarians against Canada on August 26 on the Gold Coast.

The IRB said that all nations had to finalise their World Cup squads by August 22. Given that deadline falls just days before the second Bledisloe Cup match in Brisbane on August 27, Wallabies officials decided to finalise their squad today so they could focus on the All Blacks next week.

Teams will be allowed to replace injured players before and during the World Cup, but a replaced player will not be allowed to return if he regains fitness, forcing coaches to look for versatility as well as potency.

Samo, 35, said he would be delighted if selected for the World Cup after his Wallabies career stalled following six Tests in 2004. ''I got passed the last two World Cups, and to come back this year, I didn't think I would be in this position,'' Samo said. ''To me, it'd be like a dream come true.''

Meanwhile, the Waratahs have signed Ireland's backs coach Alan Gaffney as an assistant next year.

Huge mistake, I know he had a bad game against Samoa but he's still up there with some of the best in the World. Australia have quite a young team and really could do with someone of Giteaus experience in NZ and his creativity is only gonna add to what is already an impressive Aussie back line.

Its a pity, looks like he won't get the 8 more caps he needs for the 100

I like Barnes and Gitts equally, but when you have a player taking himself out of the game because of "headaches" I think that is a big issue and should be probably monitored. He has been out of professional rugby for what â€" 2 months. He is still playing club rugby, so how can you say he has even fully healed. I am not Australian, but I am pretty sure that those club games Barnes played are nowhere near the level of Test Matches, let alone Super 15.
I guess the thinking is that Barnes is better, and if he does get a head knock early they can bring Gitts in. While if Gitts starts and has horrible games, they cannot switch him for Barnes. I still worry for Barnes, he made a conscious decision to step aside from the professional game to help his future be a brighter one. Now with the RWC knocking at his door, it looks like he wants to change his mind for the “Big Prizeâ€. I hope that this does not bite him in the bottom later in life.

He will return after his stint in France to win over 100 caps; this time away will do him good.

I can't see that happening - O'Connor will take over as the 12/10 when Mitchell is back playing
By the time Giteaus contract runs out at Toulon he'll be 31+

I think Barnes (if fit) will offer a more steadying influence at 12, if Cooper is at 10, than Gits would ... I would certainly expect that Barnes would be sent home if there is any sign of the concussion troubles, as no side can really afford to carry too many injured players at the World Cup

... I wonder if Gits would make himself available, he might give Robbie the international one finger salute ... probably not though, as it's the World Cup

I think his dropping from the squad is as much or more to do with his clashes with Robbie Deans , and his inability to fit in to the team culture, than his on field form, so if he does come back, it will have to be after 2013, as Robbie has been appointed coach until then

I always thought his best position was 9. Never really rated him as a 10 or a 12, I think he runs laterally too much. He hasn't had a good game for the Wallaies in two years, and it has not been due to lack of gametime.

This group of Australia players are very young and could be together right up until RWC 2015. I doubt the Australia team for the 2013 Lions tour will be very different.
I think they should have selected Giteau, although purely because of what he's shown he's capable of in the past, he was awesome when I saw him play against Wales in 2009, I wouldn't have him as a starter though

and I disagree with ZeFrenchy, he was terrible at scrum half playing against Wales back in 2007, I haven't seen him there since

and I'm not sure about McCabe though, I think Anthony Fainga'a would be a better choice

The thing is with Giteau is that he next to being a better player than Barnes is, is a 100% fit and can play every position in the backline. With him being able to play 9,10,12 very well.

Gits brings a lot of experience to a very young team. Not a good move by Deans. He probably take Barnes as QCs replacement but with his injury history I don't see him all that reliable. Big gamble. Only a few weeks to know how this pans out.

Giteau is crap, he hardley ever brings the ball to the line and on the rare occasion he does he doesnt do much. Not a fan sorry

It's a tough one as Barnes is also a very good rugby player. Personally I wouldn't have McCabe in there and if you needed a direct runner, put AAC outside of Cooper for the play as he is pretty physical or Ioane. Barnes and Giteau are both great readers of the game and I would much prefer to have one of them outside of Cooper to calm him down and bring the technical game that Cooper doesn't bring.

Dropping Giteau for McCabe is wrong. For Barnes is just about understandable on form, but I still think it's a mistake to drop him all together. A shame, as he's a classy player and it would have been nice to see him play in the World Cup.

No surprise at all to see Giteau not selected - he is nowhere near the player he was 3-4 years ago. I don't think he deserves to be selected based on how he has played over the last couple of years, but still it is a very brave call to let him go given his experience. Giteau's only real chance to make it was if Deans decided to take only 2 halfbacks, with Giteau included to provide cover in emergencies. However it seems that Deans has decided to go for the more traditional three halfbacks (which is probably no surprise given Giteau has always been poor when he's been used at halfback).

I can't see that happening - O'Connor will take over as the 12/10 when Mitchell is back playing
By the time Giteaus contract runs out at Toulon he'll be 31+
Has a get out clause to come back for the Loins Tour, but unless he improves in France he won't come back, or so he says.

He seems management didn't want him because he was 'too predictable'.

Sydney Morning Herald said:
His last chance to show he was a proper on-field leader came at the start of this year's international season when he was selected at five-eighth against Samoa. While Giteau was nowhere near the worst Australian player on the field, the defeat did not help his cause.
Shortly after, Giteau was told by team management he had become too predictable, and that opponents had worked him out. Giteau stood up for himself, arguing that he would be better served if he were playing in his more natural position at No.12, but was told he would have to join the queue, as the Wallabies had several midfield options.

I wonder what Deans will be thinking if Gits out performs Barnes in the Ranwick - Sydney Uni clash today, especially with Sydney Uni having the better team and pack.
