Hi Everyone
My Brother in Law and I are going to be doing a coast to coast challenge, what are we actually doing well we are going to be doing two coast to coast bike rides in the space of a week, which will total 250 miles. The challenge is due to start on 12th September 2009, where we will be riding from Ilfracombe on the North Devon Coast to Plymouth on the South Devon Coast and then cycle from Tynemouth on the North East Coast to Whitehaven on the North West Coast of the UK.
We are going to be raising money for the St Mark's Hospital Foundation, which is a hospital which specialises in colorectal and intestinal diseases. The Foundation raises much needed funds for research, education and training for the hospital where the NHS can't.
The key reason for choosing this charity for our ride is my Brother in Law, has suffered from Crohn’s disease from the age of 15 and is now 38, he was referred to St Mark’s in November 2007 and was a patient again in March 2008, during this period he had several examinations and 2 major operations, he has since sustained a period of remission which has made us both keen to show our gratitude to St Mark’s Staff and the work which they do.
Approximately one in 1,500 people have Crohn's disease, and the condition affects slightly more women than men. That means potentially on this forum alone, we have 8 members could potentially suffer from Crohn’s disease. In the UK alone, someone is diagnosed with bowel cancer every 15 minutes, every 30 minutes someone dies. It's stats like these that really starts to make you think. For women we're all familiar with breast cancer and for men prostate cancer is the most common, but for both genders, bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer.
Over the next couple of months we are aiming to raise £1000 to help out the fantastic work which St Mark’s Hospital performs, not only to people of the UK but also internationally.
