My own tips
Learn to use the through ball on manual. This will revolutionarise your game. Keep normal ground passes on assisted but change the through ball to manual. What happens is that you will use the assisted ground pass for accurate snappy to the toe passing....and the manual through ball pass for when you want to put the ball into spaces for your man to run on to. You can control the direction (any) and power for the manual through ball pass which will really come in handy when you are marked closely. You can also IMMEDIATELY control your reciever and run to the ball to meet it if you want.
When defending set the autoswitch to the lowest setting. You want to have complete control of who and when you select a defender...don't forget you can also use the right stick to select a defender that is further out.
When defending push the directional pad down (team press) and get ready for a pass.....try and anticipate pressing "change player" (L1) a SPLIT SECOND BEFORE they pass and hold down press (x). What should happen is that you will convert to the guy who is "on" the reciever...and you should at times cut in front of him to recieve the ball. If you don't make it then pull back as they often turn away and beat people who are a bit slow sticking on them.
When it comes to defending people who want to run down the side to get around and head into the box. Run with them ahead of them. Look at where they are heading....then run in front of their feet. You have to remember that when someone has sprint on they have limited turning. DO NOT use press as this makes you sprint slower. Do not call for another player to assist as this strangely also makes you slightly slower (though not as bad as press). Just hold sprint and anticipate where they are going...then run in front of their feet. They can't run past you if you are already running ahead of them....you just bide your time and wait to cut in front in front of their feet when they choose a side to try and get past you.
