Frans Steyn, in action against Samoa, looks set to go home after injuring his shoulder
AUCKLAND, 1 Oct. â€" South Africa may have guaranteed their place in the Rugby World Cup 2011 quarter-finals but coach Peter de Villiers had plenty of reasons for a restless night after the match against Samoa at North Harbour Stadium on Friday.

The Springboks battled hard for their 13-5 win against a bruising Samoan side with the physicality of the match taking its toll on de Villiers’ men.
“Frans Steyn is likely to go home,†he said. “His shoulder isn’t that good. The doctor will confirm it 100 per cent this morning, but it’s 95 per cent that he’s on his way home and that is a big blow for us.â€
The South African coach said he was reluctant to mention the seriousness of the left-shoulder injury to his inside centre because he was unsure of who he would call on to fill the gap.
“I was lying awake on a replacement,†he said. “What do we need really? That is what we have to look at now.
“I still have to make a few calls and see.â€
De Villiers acknowledged there were other players who looked worse for wear in the wake of the match, however the coach is confident there are no other serious injuries in his squad.
“Bryan (Habana), JP (Pietersen), all those kind of guys they’ve got battle scars and that’s all. Presuming they can recover quick enough to take their places this coming week.â€
While the Springbok coach is confident Frans Steyn will be the only long-term casualty from South Africa’s final Pool D match, he rued his team’s misfortunes in collecting injuries in the same places.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with us,†he said. “When we get an injury in one position we get it in one position. We had a lock, and suddenly we lost three wings in one game.
“When Lady Luck turns her back on us, she turns it properly on us.â€

Francois Steyn probably out for the remainder of the World Cup... That is a huge blow for us which can actually cost us the world cup. Let's hope Jean de Villiers is ready to step in and lets hope they don't call up Kirchner or Olivier to replace Steyn

Get Percy Montgomery out of retirement to play 10.

Oh my.

Despite reading every word of that article, for some reason when I went to make my reply I mixed up Francois with Morne.

I have no idea why I did that.
Clearly you're on drugs. Snort.

Very disappointed at Steyn's exit. Always thought he was the most underused talent in rugby, caused by SA's functional style of play. First time he turned up in the NH was in Ireland - 2004 I think - and his style of play was amazing: speed, angled running, huge kicks.

I guess he can look forward to 2015, but a great shame he'll never be one of rugby's greats.

That not good to hear for South Africa, F.Steyn was just about to peak and now his RWC's been cut short. They had a huge battle on their hands last night with the Samoans and it's very unfortunate that F.Steyn will have to sit out the rest of the RWC.

instead of playing off in a quarter, can the wallabies and springboks just join together to play the all blacks in the semi? :)

both teams have injuries, both teams are green and gold, and it's probably the only thing that could stop the all blacks from making the final

Two years before his pro debut

I've always thought he was a great player ... now I get to say "he was ahead of his time" :D

... a big loss for South Africa ... Morne's not missing many penalties, but Frans kicks them from so far out, and has been scoring a few tries too

Will Frans still get his winners medal though? - seeing as he has played 4 matches and would be replaced due to injury. ;P

But seriously, if we do go all the way (less and less likely T_T), would his medal be forfeit if he got replaced?

Knowing how frugal the IRB is, probably.

Massive loss for SA. Maybe a relief for other countries but always sad to see a player's tournament end due to injury. The 60+ m kick he pulled off against Samoa was crazy yet pretty awesome.

too late...

why the hell cant stuff like this happen to john smit or butch james?!?!? now it has to be one of our best players. and we're defo gonna miss his 60m canon as well.

Massive blow, not only the 50+m kicks but also our attack, but also getting SA over the advantage line which I think JDV doesn't do,and the number of defenders he attracts due to his huge presence, but also with his experience at flyhalf which is vital bcos of the passes he could pull off and putting players into space(interestingly enough all the teams that have won world cups have had an inside centre who is a flyhalf) does this mean it is a bad omen now since we'll have JDV...we'll just have to wait and find out. But a massive blow!!

we'll have to move lambie to 12 then and put aplon (or kirchner<_<) at 15...........

That or Dan Carter being ruled out the rest of the tournament. What are the chances of that happening though

hopefully kirchner won't get a chance. JDV will be back at 12, Lambie should stay at 15 and Aplon/Ndungane in 22 jersey. Along with Aplon Ruan Pienaar can cover 15
