Excellent try

Try of the round so far. Could this guy be the next Bulls star winger?...they've had Habana and Houggard now it could be this mans year. I dont know, but I'll definately like to see more of that kind of individual brilliance.

Only saw a few mins of that match but managed to catch that try
Some slack defending, but a cracking try either way

Yeah, was impressed when watching that. Is there not an already a Bulls v Lions thread?

Yeah this kid is a real talent. I screamed my head off for his inclusion into the Springbok team last year. Unfortunately though, Mr. Untouchable Habana will never get dropped for a kid. :(

I don't see one nope, and it was a good game in my opinion, can't wait for the Lions' next match.

van den heever is better than mvovo and basson and the other young springbok wings who started ahead of him in the autumn

Good vision and pace counts for everything. Someone asked in another thread what a swerve was; that was a good example.

He'll never get a look in though. He's white and there are quality black wingers out there (for SA). Let's face it, the Springboks are still a very good deal away from being remotely representative. Politics.

He'll have to develop a solid kicking game and move to 15 if he wants a chance at a Springbok jersey.

Kirschner actually had a solid game; I was glad to see my comment of him slowly but surely improving was right so far. Hope he keeps it up.

politics sucks. That said, SA could happily have either Steenkamp or Mtawarira in at loosehead; add that to de Jongh at 12, Habana/ Basson/ Mvovo/ Pietersen on one wing, and Kirchner/ Aplon at fullback - 4 coloured players in the starting lineup with room for van den Heever!

I hear you but the powers that be still wouldn't be happy. From the point of view of politics;

Beast is Zimbabwean. Has lived here more than long enough to qualify but the fact of the matter is he is Zimbabwean.

All the rest you mentioned apart from Mvovo are 'colored' and not black if that makes sense to a non-South African; They are colored Cape Malay from the Cape and not considered black by the vast majority of our black population although they are considered as previously disadvantaged along with Indians. To some extent a portion of the SA black population have traditionally seen the Cape coloreds as having been 'favoured' by the white population. You often hear them jokingly complaining that they weren't light enough for the old regime and not dark enough for the current one.

I don't like getting into this sort of stuff but it is a reality in SA and the only way of dealing with it is to have it out in the open. Although a team representative of SA rugby fans would look something like (out of a matchday 22) 14 white, 5 colored, 3 black a team representative of the entire nation would look more like 18 black, 2 white, 2 colored. For the first one I used blacks who would consider rugby their 1st choice sport. Many are somewhat interested but not overly concerned. I guess thats why we see so little interest because rugby is seen as a white sport and the team make-up won't change much if this perception is addressed at grass roots.

Just some useless info to give others an idea of what rugby in SA is all about.

Yeah, Kirchner did well hitting the lines, but his flat running cut off Basson and v/d Heever multiple times.

+1.

What I cannot get my head around here is why the powers that be in SA keep focussing on a sport like rugby. As with most of the world, is football not the most popular sport in SA? Have they not just hosted a world cup, and invested millions into the infrastructure of the 'black' sport? Firstly they should be concentrating on actual issues with the economy etc., and not race in a sport that is the 2nd or 3rd most popular.

Racial representation is always going to vary culturally. England - proportionally, our starting lineup should have about 12 white players, and 3 who are black or asian. As it is, we have hardly any asian rugby players, but usually have between 1 and 3 black players. In football this changes - again no Asians, but the team often has 4, 5 or 6 black players each time. Then you get to cricket, which uk blacks no longer seem to play, but there are a number of asians in and around the England team. And then you look at Great Britain athletics, in which almost everyone is black. The point I'm making is that sport is completely cultural and can never be proportionally representative of a population. Afrikaners are known for their love of rugby; surely if anyone high up in SA had a brain, they'd realise that it's no surprise that a lot of them play it, the same way a lot of English rugby players are middle class and a lot of rugby league players are Northern. It's just where the sport has its roots.

A country where race is codified into its institutions is never going to be going along the right path.

I think Robbie Coleman's destroying of Mils Muliana is worth a mention too.
