England Six Nations Squad 2025

So a bit of reflection now that everything's calmed down a bit.

Very well done to get the result. Looking at the way everyone else is going 4 wins should now be realistic.

But let's also be honest. France chucked that away through some dire handling and a bench of 9 year olds. 95 times out of 100 they'd have won that. But fair play to us for staying in the fight and finding a way.

But, parking the late drama, I actually thought our first half in Dublin was more persuasive and authoritative.

So onto the cast list…..

1. Genge. I'd still like to see more from him. Our pen count was low but he still managed to give away 2. If there were prizes for running sideways he'd win every time. You don't throw away his level of experience lightly but I'm hoping Baxter can back up his cameo on Saturday.

2. LCD. Darts never perfect but fine, he's aggressive and keeps his place.

3. Stuart. Has nailed down the shirt. Not destined to be an all time great, but going OK. Brain fade to give France possession for their first try.

4. Itoje. Thought he was fine. He was skipper so takes some credit for the result, but was only seconds away from brickbats for another narrow defeat.

5. Martin. Did his stuff OK but want to see more. One line out went straight through his hands, can't recall (m)any others thrown to him.

6. Curry. Outstanding, did exactly what the hype says he can. Lost one own ball line out at the front when the French jumper got in front of him. Looked to be struggling with an injury towards the end.

7. Earl. Better, but still not convinced that he's quite where he'd want to be. Curry (both) better than him at 7, Willis better at 8. Might find himself on the bench where he'd be a great option.

8. Willis. Decent, but not earth shattering as you'd expect for his first proper start. Having a powerful 8 is a good thing though and we should invest in him and CCS.

9. Mitchell. No competition for the shirt. Went fine but defensive stats lousy for the second week in a row.

10. F Smith. Shaky start, not an 80 minute performance but grew into the game and had a calm head when it counted. Suspect players around him may 'get' him more than M Smith.

11. Sleightholme. Nice to have some gas in the team. Narrow like everyone else in defence. Deserves more chances. Bad hairstyle.

12. Slade. Missed one bad pen to touch otherwise I thought OK if unremarkable. Definitely better in more open games.

13. Lawrence I thought went pretty well again. Shirt is his for the foreseeable. He's a strong guy, but just need to keep reminding ourselves that he's not an out and out bosher.

14. Freeman. Much better, well done. We just need to find ways of keeping him involved.

15. M Smith. Jury has to be out, but he's got to be given the rest of the championship. An undercooked Furbank shouldn't be rushed back.

Bench. Impactful, for once. Well done them, and also to SB for not just blindly using them all.

Please, please, please, can we refuse to let Fin v Marcus become a re-run of Fazlet v Ford, with sides taken, battle-lines drawn, and an inability to acknowledge when the "wrong one" does good things.

Fin and Marcus are both great, differently great. I've no particular problem with either, though I do have issues with each individually that I'd like them to prove me wrong about.

So pretty poor defence but 2nd only to Marcus in numbers of carries, and a 5.25m metre average, for a forward, is decent - can't remember if he did any kick returns or anything that might have boosted the metres?
As shown in the article, yes, yes he did. Often Marcus collecting the ball, and giving to Early for a 5-10m run-up before contact

Fin Smith played well and I honestly wouldn't mind if he became our starting 10 - if that's what is right for the team (even as a huge Marcus and quins fan). Cant help feeling like Marcus was in a lose lose situation though on Saturday.

Enjoyed that. A very good article that focuses on the facts rather than preconceived BS.

The strip from LBB and the missed kicks at goals were poor but they have garnered an insane level of criticism that ignores all of his other, positive involvements. Having rewatched the over-run pass several times, I'm pretty sure he was running a decoy line and didn't expect to get the ball. Marcus is smart, he knows he's not going to bust through a set defence - I honestly think he was looking to take defenders eyes off a pass to a deeper player.

As Charlie Morgan said, he wasn't targeted under the high ball and could well be exposed by better tactical kicking, but if we're going to start focusing on what worries the opposition rather than what they might do, it's definitely worth persisting with - at least for the remainder of the 6N.

Ramos missed a kick and Penaud dropped a kick so they must be almost as crap as Marcus.

Seeing lots of praise for F Smith and to be fair he was excellent as the game went on, it is fair to say he bring players into the game and makes them look good, if however we are looking at the entire picture he had a lot of familiarity around him, 9 and both wingers club mates, your very unlikely to get a more favourable start familiarity wise than that, I don't begrudge him any success and am happy for it just think it's needs pointing out when talking about involving others when comparing the two, if the backline is to continue to heavily feature NH players then he probably makes the most sense.

on reflection, and TBF, I don't think he WAS passed the ball - had Marcus not taken it, it was dropping into Slade's breadbasket

Problem with the turn style at 12. Ankles made of concrete 😜
We joke, but we do need to address that midfield in the summer.

I do agree they were better on Saturday...and whilst i can see Lawrence in the side still, i struggle with Slade. His kicking is a certainly a key aspect for England BUT im not sure about the rest of his game.
I hope the young pretenders at both 12 and 13 have a really good second half of the season and stay injury free...ie Will Joseph

Will Joseph is a random one - been mostly average and barely played. Also apparently headed to Gloucester so he'll never play for England obvs.

Beard is ahead of him at 13 for Quins and actually in the England squad already
