England EPS and Saxon Squad

Im more disappointed to see that Steve Thompson has not been picked. Bloke is a solid hooker. Had he made his comeback earlier he may well have toured with the Lions!

About the same amount of time as Rikki Flutey[/b]

yeh but I heard that Flutey was looking for residency way back when he was playing at Irish.

Barritt, on the other hand, has been what I thought was a temporary SA player for Saracens... he's been back to the Super 14 ffs. I didn't realise he was planning on playing for England. Wikipedia says he has a passport. Still, Adam Powell's a better player imo.

Someone explain this EPS craic to me again. Is it an agreement with the clubs that these are the players that England are going to call up or something?

It's the <strike>bullshit</strike> halfway house "Agreement" between the clubs and RFU instead of the central contracts. Bacicaly, if a player is selected for the EPS, the RFU had something like 1 callender month rightss to those players during the domestic season for training and other issues. They are also obliged to release those players for any fixtures.

That said, anyone can still be called up and there's still always a smear campaign against any club which doesn't oblige to Baron and Andrews whims, even if the players contract is the sole property of the club and not the union.

I don't really know, but i think its something like this. I could be completely wrong, however.

From Wikipedia
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
In 2001, the top clubs and the RFU formed England Rugby to help govern the club and international game. The parties agreed to restrict the number of matches at club and international level that elite players (a group of 50 or 60 players selected by the RFU) could play in order to prevent player burnout and injuries.[90] In return for releasing players from club commitments, the clubs were to receive compensation from the RFU.[/b]

Okay, so why don't they just call up players from English clubs. Surely the French clubs don't have honour this little agreement. If they're needed they can just call them up as normal.

It's because the Premiership fixtures have been played during the AIs and 6 nations, so therefore clubs were losing key players for extended periods of the season and this was taking its toll (e.g. when the players inevitably got injured). Factor in potential relegation issues and the Club vs Country debate was born.

The Unions answer however is still a 10 team ringfenced franchise, dispanding of the clubs (and all the traditions behind them) and assuming complete control for themselves.

Hense why English international rugby is so week despite having the most competitive league in the world.

Back onto the original point, I've only just noticed that the worlds greatest scrum-half annihilator, Courtney Lawes, has made it into the Saxons squad! Well done that lad! :D

Well it looks like that the top level English players that are in France had to make sure that they can join these training sessions to have a chance to play for England. Most of them have therefore clauses in their contracts that force the clubs to release them when required by the RFU.

As reported in this article from the Times the RFU staff are apparently in close contact with the French clubs and know quite well what is the form of the English players based in France. As far as I remember Rob Andrew was less open regarding the players that had decided to cross the Channel but I guess being pragmatic he had to change his position.

Times

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Wilkinson joined Toulon at the end of last season and is one of a number of French-based players named by the England manager.

"Our selections include players based in France and Rob Andrew and I have had extensive discussions with the French clubs, who have recruited English players, and these have gone well," Johnson said. "We are looking forward to continuing the positive working relationship with them, which worked so well last season.

"We will continue to monitor the form and fitness of the following players who were involved with England last season with a view to inviting them to training sessions as appropriate: Andy Goode, James Haskell, Tom May, Jamie Noon, Tom Palmer and Steve Thompson."[/b]

To put it more simply its:

And there you go. Thats basically all there is to it.

Lets not beat around the bush here, the Clubs made the best out of a crap situation and took the RFU to the cleaners because if the RFU want players who are frankly contracted to the clubs then obviously the clubs want some financial reimbursment...

Many of the England players going abroad have played hard ball and demanded that they get the time off that Martin Johnson demands for EPS training periods. Toulon for example caved in when Wilko said very bluntly that he'd walk if he was told he couldn't go join the EPS when and where Johnno demanded. Brieve have been really flexible as well with Riki Flutey.

But at the end of the day its still all down to...

Pfft, need to learn your list of TRF legends sunshine.

Can we not implement this as a necessary requirement when people join the forum?

Also, could someone please remove the f'ing 'Schweinsteiger' from my username. It's been there for about a year now and I think it's lost all meaning. Until the next world cup at least.

Flood will be injured for the AIs, and Toulon are asking whether Wilkinson can not train with England for the AIs, so Goode will probably be the man Johnson picks (yipee...)
