Eddie Jones named new Stormers Coach for 2016

Losing Jones and Borthwick will be massive for Japan don't understand why Eddie Jones is leaving with Japan 2019.

Maybe he will back out?

Don't go Eddie!

I genuinely thought he was looking at retiring after this tournament.

If they're looking at hiring former Japan coaches why couldn't it be Kirwan .

I wonder who Japan will hire next? Robbie Deans has now spent a fair amount of time there..

Wow and here I thought the Japanese side was going to sign him. Well that's good news for the Stormers, play-offs again for them.

Eddie Jones clearly made a lifestyle choice here.

Cape Town is pretty the most awesome city where rugby is played. Barcelona, San Francisco and maybe one or two here and there might edge us but they don't have rugby the way we do.

Just look at the Cape's rugby acumen:
UCT just won the world championship for tertiary institutes.
Newlands is the oldest in-use pro rugby grounds.
The SA 2015 schools rankings feature Cape schools in positions 1, 2 and 3. The 3rd ranked team (top last year) won an international invitational rugby championship featuring schools from NZ, England and Aus.
The amount of pro rugby players we deliver to the world and Bokke is pretty impressive.

I am excited for the Stormers' 2016 chances. My only real concern is still in the halves. Jano Vermaak was a decent signing but isn't getting any younger and we don't have a world class 10. Hopefully Jones has the pull to get us someone. Even if they were foreign born, maybe an Aussie> I wouldn't mind in the slightest. A bit f size and power out wide would do wonders as well. Apart from that we have quality right across the deck.. okay, so a truly world class hooker would also do nicely..

Eddie Jones might be put into a little bit of a situation here... Would hate for him to leave a system on the way up, into something quite uncertain as Super Rugby. If the coaches don't make good enough impact, then they are gone.. And with the new Argentinian team coming in, which I feel will give some teams the run about. Would be interesting to see what happens to him if the don't qualify for the playoffs. You would assume it would Sharks, Bulls, Stormers/Cougars for the playoff berths. All eyes on Los Cougars.

I'd think we'd stick with Eddie no matter what happens though; just look at the type of support Allister Coetzee got despite an age with little to show for it in Super Rugby despite the player roster he had access too.

The Cape has bags of potential. We are an asstute coach and quality 9/10 combination away from big things and Jones might still be able to bring a player or two into the fold I'd imagine considering his influence/connections/profile and the fact that WP/Stormers will have some spare cash to spend still not having made massive player signings and having freed up a few big (senior) names/big salaries over the course of three years (Habana, Vermeulen, Jaque Fourie, Andries Bekker/Gio Aplon/Kitshoff/Catrakilis, maybe even Jean de Villiers and/or Schalk Burger).

From SA I'd expect the Stormers to be in with a good shout of making the finals. We are very consistent and I'm sure a good coach will only add to that. For the other 2 spots I see the Bulls, Lions and Jaguars (as essentially the Argentine national side) as competing. The Sharks are just too erratic and will suffer from player drain IMO- I can't see them pushing alongside with those 4 sides especially as they have the Lions and Argentina in their conference and have to play NZ sides while the Stormers and Bulls will play Aus sides from the NZ/Aus conferences.

Uh, finals, as in Super Rugby finals? Can't see it tbh. Pretty much everything that comes out of AUS/NZ into the playoffs will be better than the Stormers :/.

Also, isn't it the best NZ team + best AUS team then + the next 3 best across the two conferences... Yeah... Don't see Stormers in the finals.

The pool of teams you'll be looking at will be:

Tahs, Brumbies, Highlanders, Chiefs/Canes/Crusaders/Blues. The 4 teams besides the Highlanders have all had major losses in personal. No idea how they'll do.

Go read up on the new format. Then go read up on the Stormers' stats over the last 5 years (especially focus on their record against NZ teams) even with a very limited coaching setup. Then go do some research over Jones' coaching acumen. Put everything together and then come back here.
