Dwayne Chambers for Castleford?

<div class='quotemain'>in turn (we understand) become the fastest man to have played the game.[/b]

Assuming he can sprint with a ball in hand, wearing studs, on grass.

9 seconds? Doubt it.

Doubt he'd do nine seconds, but I can't see anyone being faster than him.

I'd put down £5 that Rocket Joe and Habana would skin him on grass.

On a rubber running track in his plimpsoles he'd easily muller them, but I dunno about in the real world wearing studs.

Plus, I'll wager he's not got the stamina for 40 minutes at a time.

Mug. Olympic quality athletes are much fitter than rugby players, the one thing that he won't be concerned about is stamina.

If you measure speed over 100m or even 60m then Chambers will be the fastest man ever to have played rugby seriously.

However, rugby isn't about running quickly over 100m. It's about the 20m speed, at most 40m. That's why American footballers do a '40 yard dash' because speed over an extremely short distance is the most relevant. Over 100m the likes of Jason Robinson and Shane Williams would be relatively slow. Over 20 I wouldn't be surprised if (in their primes) they beat Habana and Chavhanga.

So, in terms of potential top speed Chambers is the fastest. Whether he's that amazing over 20m remains to be seen.

I doub't whether Chambers will have the stamina, he doesn't like that, he only works on his fast twitch muscle, and not his slow twitch, which is needed for endurance.

Plus, track and field athletes can only run at 100% once or twice in a training day. Usually they train at 60 70%. So deffo no stamina at all I think.

Apart from the fact that even if you're a sprinter you'll be doing a lot of running and gym work aside from the sprinting. The same if you've been training for American Football.

My old sports science teacher used to play football for a living, he ended up at Weymouth who at the time had Darren Campbell playing for them, he said that if it came to a long cross country run Campbell would always be lagging behind as he was not trained for that type of fitness.

I'm very interested to see how he does, as much as i hate Rugby League.

However, most of those guys play the game from 7 and have at least a decade of training, skill, conditioning and game time behind them. Chambers would probably struggle to catch the ball and run the right lines- skills that take years to refine too. God forbid he gets tackled too hard.

He would probably be more suitable to the more open style of rugby, but then again years of sprint conditioning would not be condusive to an 80 minute running game. The space that he needs as a newcomer isnt available in rugby and certainly not rugby league where the defense is set for every phase.

honestly I can't even believe they attempted this.... such a publicity stunt and a real **** one at that

according to eye-witnesses yesterday's debut for Chambers wasn't exactly earth-shattering...

lasted 37 minutes (plus had to be taken off a few times), touched the pill only 5 times, made one decent run, driven over the line for an opposition try once...hurt his shoulder

Will Castleford sign him?

I'd say that's it - it's been a memorable circus!

And that was only for the reserves!!!

Hate to say "Told you". But then again, so did everyone else with half an ounce of common sense.

this is the kind of **** that makes the super league seem like a joke ... I caught some of the highlights it was pretty funny I enjoyed his sideways running.

I fail to think of anything else.

Anyone else going to disagree with me over this in the future? [/b]

Yes me Dan .....

No no kidding!

He was never going to make it, I was hoping for him to do so tho :D

Oh dear, this is shocking.

Dawyne must be paying his publicist/HR person big bikkies to sell him like this.

They really expect to be able to get a walk in gig with a reserve grade team after his performance?

I hope for Dwayne that he gets further chances and he finally realises that he isn't cut out for it. But then again he might all of a sudden show a glimmer of hope and come good...who knows. I'd say its better not to risk it though.
