Harlequins are poised to announce the signing of highly-rated Newcastle Falcons flyhalf Rory Clegg who is out of contract at the end of the season. Clegg, who has stood in for Jonny Wilkinson for much of the current campaign, has been unable to agree a new deal at the Falcons who claim he wants too much money.

Quins have been looking to sign a young No.10 to back up Nick Evans after allowing Chris Malone to leave for London Irish and were quick to move for the 19 year-old.

Sale Sharks were thinking about making a move for the England age-group international but took too long and were beaten to the punch by Dean Richards.

Meanwhile, Newcastle could be left without a flyhalf for next season should Wilkinson follow up a big-money off from Racing Metro Paris and third-choice playmaker Rob Miller opt to follow Clegg and join a rival Premiership club. Northampton Saints are believed to have held preliminary talks with the extremely talented England Under-20 flyhalf Miller, who is out of contract at Kingston Park at the end of the season.

Miller, 19, only signed a one-year deal at the start of the season, as opposed to the three-year contract Newcastle wanted him to pen, and has found himself in demand.

Miller, who can also play at fullback, helped Tynedale to win promotion to National Two while on loan at the north-east club last season.[/b]

Are Clegg and Miller any good?

I've seen Miller play a couple of times for England U20's and he looks pretty useful. Certainly a prospect I wouldn't mind Saints getting their hands on.

Clegg looks to have good potential whenever I've seen him. It'll be good for him to learn his trade under a class act such as Evans.

Wouldn't Andy Goode be a good short-term investment for Newcastle untill Wilko returns?

Newcastle might do well to look across the channel... must be a few French players looking for a game these days?

Never seen Miller play, Clegg strikes me as little more than competent. Doubt he's a future star.

Now I've said that, he'll probably go on to become one.

At this rate, they could have Glen Jackson for a year!

Wilkinson edges closer to French move
• Fly-half's advisors have opened talks with Racing Metro
• Deal reported to be worth £1.5m

Jonny Wilkinson's possible move to the French club Racing Metro may be edging closer after it was reported last night the England fly-half's advisers were in talks for a deal worth £1.5m that could be sealed in a fortnight.

Newcastle Falcons will demand a fee of at least £300,000 for the World Cup winner who, despite a string of injury setbacks since 2003, remains England's most high-profile player. It is understood that the French club's president, Jacky Lorenzetti, is prepared to pay "whatever it takes" to sign Wilkinson, who has been out of action for the past six months with a fracture kneecap but hopes to be fit for the end of England's Six Nations campaign.[/b]

£300,000 to sign Wilkinson?

Thanks to the poxy government making me a partal shareholder in the clubs assets (via Northern Rock), I'll await my cheque in the post.

He is, but you know as soon as Wilko's fit he'll be pushed straight back into the team, only for Newcastle to drop 3 places in the table. That's if he's fit in time for Newcastle to pick him before he leaves for a French paycheck with one digit too many.
