[COVID-19] General Discussion

Sounds like lockdown until mid-March?

Mid-Feb target for top 4 tiers to be vaccinated,
Two weeks for it to take hold,
Two weeks for hospital numbers to drop
Start coming out of lockdown?
(according to BoJo)

Well this U turn occurred about a week earlier than I expected, they are getting better. Soon the U-turns might even happen before they make the decision...

don't get the last one, what with Premier league players getting it and matches being called off.

I reckon pro teams are fairly safe because of the frequency of testing, there's been few enough massive outbreaks and they've reasonably strict bubbles. I'd say morale of the population is a consideration too.

I'm happy enough anyway, I've got back into the PL after not taking any not much interest since I was about 14 and Ronaldo was about.

how far down the football pyramid will they allow to keep playing? just the PL?

Morale is a key point my father goes days/weeks without seeing anyone. He also has few interests outside sport which isn't uncommon in his age group, he kinda does need it for his mental health for something to do/watch. He's been struggling recently with only Wendyball and the odd smattering of rugby. The Cricket tests last summer genuinely gave him something to enjoy last year.

Plus as noted as long as testing is good it should be fine and they've proven at elite level it can be done pretty well.

An incredible tool available to everyone is meditation. Loads of apps available like Calm to help peeps stay in the present moment and help with me the health. there's a series on Netflix atm on headspace.

I really do think the Government should also be promoting this in all age groups, because mental health has suffered enormously this past 9 months. Getting peeps to do it and practise it is another matter. No different to physical exercise IMO.

Dr. Fauci warned us last March, but Trump said it's nothing to worry about. Well, Covid-19 deaths continue to spike and Trump keeps changing the subject. o_O What an A-hole!

Another 60,000 new cases today. That's the population of Hereford or the capacity of the Emirates Stadium.

I stopped following the finer detail of "the slides" a while back. Notwithstanding that the first wave was under reported, these are astonishing numbers if mostly genuinely new cases.

Boris Johnson says that as we take this "giant leap to reclaiming our lives", we have to "contend with the new variant".

It has been spreading with "frightening ease and speed" leading to "more cases than ever before" - and these numbers "cannot be explained away by the meteoric rise in testing".

With the numbers in hospital 40% higher than at the first peak, it is "inescapable the facts are changing, and we must change our response".

There is "no choice" but to return to another lockdown so the new variant can be controlled "until we can take the most likely victims out of its path" with vaccines, says the PM.
Sounds like this lockdown will last until vaccines are at a certain level (not defined) rather than be based on 'flattening the curve'. I wonder what that make of the new strain it suggests even this lockdown can't contain it.

From what I've been reading today the vaccine rollout has been a **** show,

GPs promised doses before Christmas still waiting on them to arrive now,
Other surgeries just keep getting their arrival date moved back further and further,
People told their vaccine date then the night before getting told their appointment has been cancelled because of lack of supplies
