Cockerill fears diving Outbreak

So.. when he says "we're not going to coach it" - he actually means "we are going to coach it", or at the very least "we aren't going to tell players to not do it".

You get issues if you don't allow players to give a dig for being held around the neck.
By harshly penalising appropriate proportional retaliation to off the ball incidents as we saw with the Cowan incident you basically say to players "hold on to and irritate opposition players - they either wont do anything or they do and will be carded".

It's a difficult balance to strike, but one that is feasible IMO.
I know that Rugby's big-wigs will disagree though.

Diving is endemic now!!

Along with the vociferous and constant appealling to the ref, the cheating at the breakdown, the cheating at scrums, the falling over if touched when kick and chasing etc...................

The players are paid heavily so they cheat, the coaches are paid heavily so they encourage cheating, the owners/fans want winning results and if there is cheating by their side so what?......

What do you expect?

They cannot all be golfers!!!!

Lol! Anyone who got punched in the face and dropped will tell you that you can't simulate the movement as you are basically KTFO!

It's a bad example that they use in the article, because I have to agree with the TMO. In SA we use the term "handbags". From one angle it looks like the hardest punch ever thrown, but if you look at it again from another angle, the arm barely grazes the other player, or it's more like a slap or grab.

I would rather look at the diving itself, of which Bryan Habana is a prime example. Look at the last Heineken Cup final as prime example.

This is true. Very often you see players at the edge of rucks being held onto, and then act to try and get them off. We saw this the other week when Tyrone Holmes was red carded after having a little dig from being held back by a player and removing their arm with their foot. Stuart Barnes called it a "charter for cheating".

hope you noticed the video ref did say QUOTE "he stamped on the black guy on the floor" now was he refering to the colour of his kit or the colour of the guy who was actually white......... taken out of context it could mean either, this is surely a ban for this video ref from the TRF for racism!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now now, taking things a bit personal are we. In every game I have watched, the TMO and the Refs only use colour in terms of the kit. Like "Hands off Green", "Roll away Black 7"(Richie Mccaw), "Advantage Blue".

nobody is taking anything personal i did not post the video, i watched and heard the quote, it was real and from the video ref not me and he did not use a number,!!!! I knew exactly what he was saying but would everyone??? people who now nothing about rugby could assume thats what he meant to say its was an observation end of story even Phychic Duck is sending private messages saying i am bitter!!!!!! what the f$$$ is wrong with you guys have you lost all sense of humour, it was an observation an observation hope you now get it. This forum is becoming more and more Pudding Club!!!!!!

I agree with Rats point but at the same time it's enshrined in the rules that retaliation is no excuse. If Declan Fitzpatrick is sent off for one not great punch when blood is coming out of his eye, then how is a punch for being held not a red cardable offence?

If they start reffing on effect then they are encouraging a higher level of simulation then exists. I don't have an answer, but it's an issue.

Perhaps they do not appreciate the humour and look on life of we of the older generation in the same way we do not always get theirs!!!

Haha I remember that game, couldn't believe it when he pulled out the yellow...

Its been frustrating to see it creep into the game over the last few years, and if it gets worse I hope the IRB bring rules in to stamp it out as soon as possible.

Main incidents that stick to my mind are Olivier Azam's massive milking of a Tom James "headbutt" back in 2009. Does lean his head in, but Azam's reaction was up there with the Premier Leagues best! So glad the Blues beat them with 14 men, felt all the better.

The other one in Vincent Clerc in that Wales vs France RWC semi, and no I don't mean the Warburton tackle. Couple of moments where he got clipped after kicking, not much contact if any, but went down and started rolling around. Lost a lot of respect for him after that.

Although Marshall did ham up the push, the other player did blatantly interfere with the halfback so I guess the yellow was okay, though it probably should have just been a penalty without a card. Marshall's theatrics, I'm sure, didn't hurt though. His face in the slo-mo is just priceless!
