Chiefs vs. Rebs

Foster has been in charge for 8 years now..... And nothing. Truly an awful coach

Well he's going at the end of the super season anyway - but, perhaps not a totally fair comment as he did get them to a final against the Bulls one year, and when you consider that their tight five haven't always been the strongest and that only four different franchises have ever won it, that makes an awful lot of awful coachs

Nanai Williams, Masaga and Sivivatu... What a dangerous back three!
Although i do like deMalmanche I'd love to see Elliot get a start and deMalmanche come on for 20mins when everyone else is tired, he's brutally strong and devastating with the ball in hand.
Umaga = Awesome!
Ref = A bit useless...

Rebels so far are inconsistent. Mortlock cant afford to be injured they'd miss him badly. I too thought the reff was a bit harsh on some calls but the Rebels dropped their standards also. Yes the Chiefs away in slippery conditions is always going to be tough but the Rebels could've done better. Masaga did very well to score his first try, that fend of his on Gerrard was well done but he shouldnt have scored that try, still its not the first time Ive seen Masaga fend of someone for a hard fought try.

Reb's weren't too bad, cipriani is doing a good job and Mortlock's experience is a bonus. I tell you what though if I could choose between either Tana & Mortlock in my team it wouldn't be a contest. It does kinda make the All Black mix interesting too because if a couple of All Black mid fielders get injured, heck if Nonu is injured before the world cup and tana continues this form he's sure to be in the mix - he wont play every game but he should only be needed for the couple of important ones.

Williams is a good player but Sivivatu is Sivivatu, he's not even back to his best and he's scored 2 trys already. And Masanga's super rugby scoring record is so good he must be worth about two trys every 3 games or so on average and at least one a game when he's in good form. His determination to get to the try line I think is 2nd to none in NZ. And Mills isn't just one of the best if not the best 15 in the world he's also the captian... There is also a question mark over Williams defence which will be being addressed by the coaches. Yes he will start games this year that is a sure thing with the rotation that is needed.

Was good to see Craig Clarke Back he's pretty important to the chiefs engine room and he's a good safe option taking the ball up to and over the advantage line and getting safe ball back.

Ben May also had a good game though this is the first game overall the chiefs maybe were the weaker scrum most of the game they did win some critical scrum turnovers that meant that even though the chiefs lost a couple more scrum battles overall I think they won the war.

Aled Was strong as allways but the lineout improved a bit too which was a good sign.

Messam had another good game, less ball in hand but made some big tackles which ended in turnovers and he threw one pinpoint wide pass to his right which setup a drive that ended in a try.

Donald & Leonard were good too, some of Donald's early kicks were punished but that had a lot to do with the fact that he was keeping the ball in to protect the weaker chiefs lineout and early on mills wasn't right, positional play wasn't up to scratch and Gerrard's kicking was superb. Directed play well and kept things organised in mid field which I think the chiefs have missed in the first two rounds. I believe play needs to be organised in the mid field so you can best take advantage of having a strong back 3. Donald popping short passes for hitups mid field to suck in the defence then spinning wide when space is created. Kicked 7/9 which was good.

Tana is damn good, he and donald make a defencive wall oposition teams may as well ignore as a avenue to attack early in the game Donald smashed Cipriani as he passed and tana Smashed the next guy as he took the pass and that really set the tone for the rest of the game. Often when reb's backs attacked that area it ended in a turnover or lost forward in the tackle. Tana also showed he has still got good speed as well when he set masanga to the line.

Getting the bonus point was critical for the chiefs after having nothing from the first two games, they also have a +ve points dif now too. chance to get off the bottom of the table next week.

Masaga's second try was a great effort but it was clearly double movement... He had his little chicken wing flapping to get himself over the line! Haha

There is no such thing as a "double movement" in Rugby Union.

A player who is tackled is entitled to reach out and score.

[textarea]Law 15.5 (g) If a player is tackled near the goal line, that player may immediately reach out and ground the ball on or over the goal line to score a try or make a touch down.[/textarea]

Also, his forward momentum had not ceased, so even if he was tackled several metres short, he is still entitled to hold on to the ball while sliding. The South Africa winger Stefan Terblanche is good at this, particularly in the wet.

yeah, as I understand it:

he always had momentum, was moving/sliding toward the goal line = no double movement.

if his momentum had stopped and he reached forward with his arms or chicken wing and planted the ball = no double movement

if his momentum had stopped and he had to then somehow propel his body forward again to score = double movement/no try

You have it right on the money, except that there is no such thing as a double movement, i.e. it is not a part of the Law.

Law 15 allows the tackled player to immediately "pass, place, push the ball".

[textarea]Law 15.5 THE TACKLED PLAYER
(b) A tackled player must immediately pass the ball or release it. That player must also get up or move away from it at once.

c) A tackled player may release the ball by putting it on the ground in any direction, provided this is done immediately.

(d) A tackled player may release the ball by pushing it along the ground in any direction except forward, provided this is done immediately.[/textarea]

Placing the the ball over the line is legitimate.

What people call a double movement is really "not releasing". If you cannot place, pass or push the ball, you must release. If you propel yourself forward, then you have not met one of the four requirements...... PING!!!

True that, surprise the brothers next time were watching a game and that pops up.

If you aren't held, but are knocked to the ground, are you allowed to crawl etc forwards?

So 7:00 is legal?

I've seen players pinged for that several times. My understanding was that you couldn't propell your momentum. So while sliding, you're not allowed pull along the ground till you score. Good try none the less.
