Champions Cup - Pool 3, Round 1 (Leicester, Toulon, Scarlets, Ulster)

He's well built - very muscular, I think he's probably somewhere around 90kg just going by eye... but even then that is tiny.
He is a great player though, and what he lacks in size he makes up for in pace and workrate.

It'll be interesting to see whether he can viably stay at hooker.

That's a nice enough Ulster team but am also a bit sick of seeing Payne at 13. Good to see McCloskey being rewarded a euro cap after his good form. Think call for Payne is definitely coming from above where they're trying to fast track some game time into him for the AIs. To think Ulster have a midfield of Olding and Cave on the BENCH.

Oh well, at least the blaming of Schmidt can now be turned into blaming of everyone. What I wouldn't give to see Payne playing 13 in training... we shoulda gave him to the Ladyboys.

In fairness Payne has been gradually looking better at 13 and had a decent game against Glasgow. I completely understand why Ulster fans would prefer Cave starting but it's not as if he's suddenly absolutely woeful.

Don't forget about Luke Marshall and Chris Farrell. (Who will most likely return from France so ive heard). :p

So has your opinion slightly changed then since we last spoke? Considering it clearly wasn't just a squad rotation for him at 13..

I'm not caught up at all on Tigers form so I have no idea how this'll go, we definitely still have the power to beat them regardless. It's a bit strange looking at our bench and seeing our midfield is stronger than what we have starting.. (In my opinion).
Glad to see form rewarded for McCloskey though.

So nervous for this game wish I could have gone.

Some young players on key positions big test for them.

Wish we had Allen.

Cant see this being anything but a ulster win.

Will be intersting to see Thacker and pas if they get on.

Ulster are getting ridden by Poite here, 14 point turnaround through wrong decisions.

Edit: Leicester have joined in now.

I turned on to see some rugby and there were two sides....Ulster and one in green!!

Imagine my shock to discover that this green side was a Leicester I had not seen before this season and one that even my old mate Tigs had given up on!!!!

33 minutes gone and 19-3.......................well done Tigers.............we will not worrry about concerns about the ref after all, that pesky winger who took out the Leicester player in the air, intentionally, did not even get a yellow card because he smiled at Poitey!!!

Tony you're going a big soft if you think that was a yellow! :p Bowe realised his mistake and got under Benjamin to take the impact, a perfect call in mine and every non Leicester fans opinion.

Only the wife is allowed to say that............................!!!

Please do not confuse me with a Tiger's fan although I do owe them my undying admiration for the way in which Biarritz were allowed to absolutely hammer them at Welfod Road when Tigers (and BO) were in their full pomp putting some 30 points on them in the first half of a H Cup match !!!!

Ahh those were the days!!!

What happened Ulster in the first half! Ulster have to get their lineouts sorted or they've no chance.

Tbh I hadn't spotted too much wrong with the decisions - but wasn't watching closely due to it being my father's birthday - seen enough to know we should be looking at ourselves before we look at the ref though, awful discipline and basic skills.

Happy Birthday Mr Peat Senior!!

Game on, keep Leicester to three tries and get within 7 wouldn't be bad for a trip to Welford road.

If one were to be pedantic about the reffing.........that try should not have been given as there is little doubt that an Ulsterman went in to the ruck on the try line at least from the side, if not from the Leicester side, but have to say it would have been wrong to not let Ulster have that try!!

Thank Fuk for Gibson's charge down took a bit of wind out of the sails. Talk about heart pounding stuff.

Thought Kitchener (must be 4th choice England lock ATM), Scully, Benjamin (At places), Gibson, Ayerza, Thorn, Balmain (in the loose).

were the stand outs for us

Well 1 thing I will say. Whoever is thinking of playing Payne 13 watch tonight. Useless at 13. Very good at 15. They either play him in his best spot or don't play him at all. It's not working and Ulster shouldn't sacrifice they're team in hope that Payne may play 13 for Ireland. Although form shows he's nowhere near Henshaw as 13.

After his performance against Clermont I would have Kruis in there to be honest. Like another back row with all his tackling and ruck work. Great at lineout time and a leader from what I've seen.
