Champions Cup - Pool 1, Round 2 (Clermont, Munster, Sale, Saracens)

Premiership is more important - we, realistically, never had a chance of getting out of the group. If we can put in good performances in Europe to build form going back into the Premiership then that's ideal, results aren't massively important.

pfffheh...just listen to you, you sound like us Top 14 fans making excuses for the awful results of French clubs in the Challenge Cup...tisk.

@Big Ewis he's right though... Sale don't have a realistic chance of winning the tournament for them is about spring boarding into the premiership.

Been fair they don't have much hope of being near premiership either.
Who said we're trying to win the Prem?
Our aim is to try and qualify for the Champions Cup next season - still a big ask considering the strength of the prem this season, but who knows.

True but why qualify just to not concentrate on it?

To get better?

There are lots of different reasons teams want to be on the competition.

Money, exposure to me teams, bench marking, profile of club and so on..... When one of the big Irish provinces drop out of the cup everything will become clear :)

Thing is Irish teams can't do that. Even when out we put best team out always trying to win. And you mention prize money for pools etc. you get that this year and that mentality was why competition was lowered to 20. But guess all teams to their own. In Ireland we just come with intention of winning every game regardless

@munstermuffin you misunderstand me.... No one is saying Sale don't go out to win. But their objectives for the season will be realistic not based on winning this cup... Whereas a team like Saracens or Munster well judge whether seasons on this cup.

Maybe like it just bugs me when teams don't put out best teams. And I not singling out Sale as French teams do it too it's just mentality though. In fairness most English teams put strongest teams out even when out

Munster and Leinster have both put out significantly weaker teams in the Pro12 the when it's suited them to rest players... Why is this different?

Every team everywhere plays with the intention of winning. However, there are some games where the management (with or without the intervention of international coaches/dictates) decide that they will not select their best team available as the non selected players are to be rested or protected for other matches/competitions.

So, yes, Munster go out to win every game but they do not necessarily pick their best team for every match thereby limiting the intention.........!!!

Munster and Leinster have both put out significantly weaker teams in the Pro12 the when it's site then to rest players... Why is this different?

Because that is what allows them to put out their best teams in this competition with the secondary intent of ensuring their international players have top game time before the Autumn or 6 Nations internationals!!!

very disappointing news..

So Sale Sharks aren't really trying to win anything at all. Their principle is just Saling about, they're not aggressive carnivorous sharks, they're Sale Sharks. *jumps into submarine cabin and charges down into deep sea for weeks*

Look I'm just asking.
In Pro12 it's different because when we rest guys we still expect win and it's over a longer scenario where majority of times we still achieve our goal of getting to playoffs hoping to win tournament. So difference is we still expect to win that match and tournament.

@Tony we rest players due to a scientific programme regards player welfare that the French are following now also to some sorts and English do too. And it's done in Pro12 as it's over 22 games to get to playoffs as opposed to 6.

@munstermuffin I can see that but you have to see that Munster can afford to do so in the Pro12 and still qualify for this competition.

The likes of Exeter, Sale, Bordeaux, even Montpellier cannot as there are more clubs able to take the top 5/6 positions in their leagues than there are in yours and fewer games they can take for granted.

Consequently, they tend to concentrate on the League to gain the highest possible place with qualification for this competition a secondary thought!

PS I believe that you have to do the whole thing...."@Tony Manx"!!!!
