All Black first five-eighth Dan Carter is set to announce his rugby future at a press conference in Christchurch today.

The New Zealand Rugby Union announced the press conference will take place at 12pm where Carter is expected to announce whether he will remain play rugby in New Zealand after the World Cup.

Last month the Herald on Sunday reported that Carter and All Black captain Richie McCaw have been offered four-year contracts by the NZRU to stay in New Zealand with unprecedented levels of flexibility and payment.

I think he might stay. But it could go either way really, and I wouldn't blame him for wanting to go overseas either.

Although there are other potential candidates beyond this year for the AB's 10 jersey, I still seriously doubt that Dan will play for the AB's for the last time at only 29. Maybe another sabbatical type deal is on the cards.

Good news for NZ. It's hard to imagine NZ rugby without Dan around. Though you have to wonder how all the wannabe all black first fives feel around NZ. I think being "dan's backup" must be the hardest job in rugby. Sit on the bench most of the time then the limited chances they do get they end up having to play at standards set by the best player in the world. It's a poisoned poisoned chalice.

850k a year isnt bad at all seeing as he can go get another lazy mill for playing 3 months for some french team whenever he wants too

haha basically your on the fence mate

Lol yeah pretty much. But I did mention the sabbatical thing too so I'll say I called it :p.

Also supposedly Richie is close to announcing his plans. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't resign too, given everything he's said about his future lately.

That gives him one year to play in Japan and earn 50,000,000 yen.

Great news for New Zealand. Not sure he'll be the same player in the next World Cup that he is today, but he'll certainly still be one of the best in New Zealand if ot the world. With Brett, Delany both signing over seas, and Donald looking like he will follow, I think Carter may have taken their saleries, but he's worth it. The good thing is, by the time Carter is ready to go overseas or retire (substantially the world record points holder), Cruden, Anscombe, Barrett, Lima and Robinson should all be more or less in their prime and with good match experience.

The biggest non-story of the day. He was never going to make a permanent move while there's no competition for the All Blacks jersey.

I wouldn't be surprised if Adidas pay him more then the figures quoted in sponsorship anyway.

I agree entirely. Another that I would add to the list of first-fives that could potentially take over from Carter is Tyler Blyeendaal, who in my opinion looks the most talented of the whole lot (though I do like the look of Barrett as well..).

That didn't stop Carl Hayman moving to Newcastle ;)

Not really sold on Bleyendaal.. He is by far the hardest working though so thats a huge plus in his favour. Everyone needs to bear in mind as well, there are going to be plenty more youngsters stepping up from school rugby between now and 2015. Not too many people had heard of Lima, Barrett and Anscombe before the ITM cup.

Good call, he'll be one to watch. I guess the thing he seems to offer more than he others is consistancy, but he doesn't look quite as flashy as Lima, Anscombe. Barrett and Cruden (not saying he is worse, as he seems to run a game a little better) which I could see him being limited in game time for it, especially in the Crusaders.

Sure, but I'm just talking about players ready to step up after Carter leaves in 2015. Obviously there will be a lot of talented players after Carter, but as has been mentioned before, throwing a young first 5/8th into top level rugby, especially international rugby, is usually a bad idea. I can't see too many fly halves that are younger than Anscombe being ready for the All Blacks by 2015.

Where will Delany head to? Curious to see who will be the 10 for the Blues next season as Brett and McCalister are leaving
