I'm sorry. I'm a wishy wahy liberal. I read the observer. I value it for its balance and accurate reporting.

Why does it employ Eddie Butler ?

Today's attack on the England rugby team was a disgraceful piece of hatred. I suspect his articles say more about Mr Butler than about his subject. Could this desire to be in the vanguard of those attacking English rugby have anything to do with Mr Butler's lack of acceptance by the Welsh Rugby team when he was captain owing to his being, as a public school master, too English.

I like a good biased pundit. But spite and vitriol posing as respectable journalism is just pathetic.

When you start a thread discussing an article. Give us oversea's members a link to the article, we don't know where to look :D

Sorry mate

Here it is.

This is a straw/dromedary interface problem.

The Observer is meant to be an intelligent broadsheet, but week in week out, season in season out, Eddie Butler who is meant to be the paper'schief rugby correspondent gets away with peddling this rubbish. If it was, let's say Campo the pundit, you'd read it, have a laugh and move on. But for the chief rugby correspondent to be so one eyed and so consistently one eyed, well I'm afraid I just lost it with the guy.

It isn't a very good article. More of a substance-less rant. 'Johnny missed kicks so he is not good anymore' was about as in depth as the article got. But don't feel left out, this is the kind of crap we get from our "chief rugby journalists" as well.

With the exception of saying England will reach the final everything he was true

We were God awful, and will be lucky to make the semis let along the final

haha, yeah I read the Guardian/Observer online but their sport journalism isn't up too much. this excellent comment from ranger66 picks some good quotes:

"
This is probably the most vomit-inducing article I've read in quite an age. Really awful stuff!
It is what the beast does – takes the ball and drags it into a dark place.
The only Beast running around the RWC now wears the Green and Gold and ended Phil Vickery's career in 2009.
they will face France, so cuckoo in defeat to New Zealand and Tonga that they will make barely a mouthful for the beast that must be fed.
Hope that doesn't come back to bite you...
There is a price for the way they play the game. There are victims, and not just among those they eat.
Were you just watching a Batman movie or something before you wrote this?
The beast can look at those left and feel no fear.
I highly, HIGHLY doubt that."

More like he's watched Shrek on acid

Haha I found it quite a funny article, but it's not very intelligent indeed. The BEAST! :p

If you wan't a funny read sure, but doesn't go into depth and not what you expect.

I thought it was a decent article, even if it didn't really say all that much. At least he puts thought into what he writes and does so in an interesting and creative manner. There are too many journalists that just spew out the same drivell time and again, who don't appear to know that there is such a thing as a thesaurus, and can barely be bothered to proof read, or get their articles proof read before publishing them. I'm not a massive fan of Eddie Buttler, but it's sometimes nice to see a genuinely bright and knowlegable journalist, pundit and commentator do something a little different.

I understand that the contents of the article might not be to you taste, but I feel it's all rather true. England are not playing good rugby, yet they are slowly working their way through the tournament. Off the field they are not doing themselves any favours, and Buttlers description of them being some kind of beast is pretty apt. England and their style of play (for the most part) are unliked by most other nations, is this news to you?

Not my point. The truth is that a not very good England side, at best the 6th best so far in this tournamen,t have found a way to grind out a couple of victories. That's it. But Butler finds a way to turn them into the four horsemen of the apocalypse. I'm not even complaining that ythis in isolation is a bad article.

My main point is that I'm fed up with a broadsheet having as its chief rugby correspondent someone who consistently spews out biased bile. He gets away with it when commentating because he has Brian Moore by his side who is equally one-eyed so the two of them just about make a pair of eyes.

Truth hurts don't it.
