Brumbies vs the BIL

Playing the Brumbies game at the same time as the State of Origin game must be one of the most stupid decisions by a sports administrator in the history of sport. Even diehard Brumbies fans would rather be watching the Origin game.

I believe the state of origin dates were announced after the match was announced ,

I can see both sides of the argument. I agree in principle with you, but on the flip side how are Australia meant to prepare if they are consistently missing players. The provincial games are literally every 3 days or so. Are Australia meant to just practise altogether in the final week before the test?

And on the flip side to the flip side the hosts, in this case, Aus are an established team who should only need a little bit of polishing in the run up to the tests. There's 10 days between this game and the first test which ought to be enough….seriously, just how much prep can you do for games against a scratch team? Plus, although there's an injury risk, isn't there more potential upside from some of their players getting direct experience of the Lions and getting a bit more battle hardened?

Put it this way, if I was flying out it would be for the tests only. Lions badge themselves as premium yet end up playing M Mouse. I think it’s pretty poor and TBH the Lions should be holding the whip hand here.

Not this Brumbies fan, and judging by the ticket sales, most seem ok with their decision.

It’s the NRL doing NRL things

Fascinating game this, there will be a lot of players there in the mindset that if they dont do anything stupid they are test squad men.

Freeman, Ringrose, Furlong, Chessum, and Curry probably all need big games, Furlong and Curry desperately.

The rest are probably nailed on squad men

Swap Freeman for Aki. Aki needs a big game to pass Tuipulotu, I'd say Freeman is pretty nailed on for the tests at the moment.

Yeah I agree with that Freeman is one of the first names on the sheet atm
Chessum just needs to be solid in the line out and work hard around the pitch I don't feel anyone has set a big bar for 6 currently

Agreed.

Like Chessum a lot. Definitely *looks* like he’s been spending a fair bit of time in the weights room over the last year or so. Which he probably had to if he was concentrating more on lock. Doesn’t look like he’s lost anything in terms of mobility or athleticism.

Freeman has been superb, hasn't really missed a beat, but he's limited in comparison to the competition around him, that are huge weapons.

We see it a lot that solid well rounded players are over looked for the X factor.

I personally have Freeman in my first team, but what VDM and Kinghorn offer is very exciting.

Don't think there's too many picks that people could throw there toys out over to be honest? For example, I'd probably go for the Scottish centers over then Irish but it's not like picking the Irish boys is a bad pick and I'd say that goes right across the squad. They're all good players at the end of the day. Not as good as me or Tipuric but still good.

I mean based off this tour Aki would definitely be a bad pick - he's been comfortably the worst centre so far, will need a big big game to convince me he should be in the test side
I'd much rather a less familiar Tuipolotu/Ringrose partnership over just putting the Irish ones together cause they're mates

Yeah that's fair but I think there has to be a certain amount of credit in the bank analysis as well given it's the lions and the whole fact it's a makeshift squad thrown together. I do agree though, form should still be the primary metric to look at when making selection decisions, I just think the reality is different when you’re a coach (something I know nothing about lol)

It's like Beirne. He's not been great but if I was coach he starts coz I know he's a baller and if he didn't sort it out and the lions lost I'd just hang him out to dry in public after the game and absolve myself of any responsibility. That's a proper coach.

So basically you'd say, "Even though you're playing ****, you've played not **** in the past so I'm going to pick you and hope you don't play **** and if you do play **** I'll blame it all on you for playing **** when I gave you the chance to be not **** even though I knew you'd being playing **** recently."

Correct?

That’s pretty much it. It’s called the Trump approach to coaching Rugby. Do what I want and not take any responsibility when things go tits up.

Beirne doesn’t make the test team for me. It doesn’t matter what he’s done in the past as every player on tour has ‘done something’ or ‘shown form’ in the past.

I’d also add he’s not playing averagely, he’s playing poorly which is even worse.

Freeman for me is nailed on, he’s playing poorly does the basics very well, high ball very well and has that xfactor about it that we’ve seen time and time again.

Chessum is an interesting one, for me he starts at 6 in the test but I do wonder if Farrell wants two open side and a really quick game. Not sure that has worked so far but also curry has been anonymous.

Maybe Morgan’s and VDF as a combo if you want that kind of tho g but it’s Chessum at 6 for me.

Personally I think anyone being picked on reputation makes a mockery of the whole tour. The whole idea is to pick the best players from the 4 nations and get them to play as a team. Every player has the opportunity to make their case and try to make the 23. That's the point, which players can come together and perform in unfamiliar settings.

Yes, there is more to selection than performances, but performances should definitely count for more than reputation.

As much as I love Duhan, he hasn't performed so far on this tour since coming back from injury and shouldn't be starting in the tests. I'd be surprised if Kinghorn is shunted to the wing to make way for Keenan at full back.
