I work at a radio station in South Africa, and I ran the exact same competition on air for a little while. People were innitially keen, and came in with their rands every week, but the numbers soon dwindeled and the concept just faded away. A few folks did win, but there were far too many roll overs due to the fact that on avg we'd only have about 25 ppl taking part per week out of the 49 openings.
Based on the above, I reckon that the best way to make this work would be to make it a lump sum, so that there is a guaranteed interest over a prolonged period. Also, we go the whole hog, with at least 40 ppl taking part, so that there is a large amount up for grabs every week - keeping everyone very keen. I know a rollover would eventually lead to that, but ppl want gratification now, not later.
In terms of number allocations - we must decide whether we're keen to keep a permanent number, or change it on a weekly/monthly basis. The latter option would mean a lot more work for the organisors, so I'm very happy to go permanent. However, I can guarantee that someone's gonna start *****ing after a few weeks about their number being a bad choice, owing to their favourite rugby player retiring, or something else absurd.
Also, how soon after a lotto can the winner expect to be payed his winnings, and will the transaction fee be deducted from the winnings? I'm not trying to sound like a know it all - I'm just trying to cover all the queries people are going to have.
Also, spare a thought for us Saffers - a pounds going at R14 at the moment!
I love the concept, just wanna warn you guys that it became a bit of a organisational headache for me after about 3 weeks - but then again, i was dealing with idiots.
Thoughts?
Cheers
