Best national anthem?

No 'God save the Queen' :bana: Even the English i know dislike it.
[/b]

Did you know that the Portuguese national anthem, "A Portuugeza", was originally an anti-UK song?! :D Honest!

If you see the last part of the Portuguese anthem on the youtube links I posted, you cam read:

"
(...)
Ãs Armas, Ãs Armas
Sobre a terra e sobre o mar
Ãs Armas, Ãs Armas
Pela pátria a lutar

Contra os canhões, marchar, marchar!"

It is roughly thanslated as:

"To the guns, to the guns
over the land, over the sea,
To the guns, to the guns
to fight for Motherland

Against the cannons, we march, we mach"

(I know, it's a little war-ey :p )

But the original song, said: "Contra os bretões" instead of "Contra os canhões"

meaning: "Against the British," instead of "Against the Cannons"

This was because of the British invasions in Africa mande to the Portuguese territories, in the XIX century.

I think most national anthems have versus aimed at the English :D

"Flower of scotland" better with pipeband :) [/b]

aye, but the IRB wont allow it! (although credit to the french - they got a pipe band for us in the 6 Nations! :cheers: )

the frensch anthem (and because of the crowd at home) seems to be the most powerfol

"irelands call" is amazing in the stadium

Fiji's National Anthem has great lyrics.

Here is Fiji National Anthem Lyrics

Fiji
Anthem 1

Blessing grant, oh God of nations, on the isles of Fiji,

As we stand united under noble banner blue.

And we honour and defend the cause of freedom ever,

Onward march together,

God bless Fiji!

CHORUS

For Fiji, ever Fiji, let our voices ring with pride,

For Fiji, ever Fiji, her name hail far and wide,

A land of freedom, hope and glory to endure whate'er befall

May God bless Fiji, forevermore!

Blessing grant, oh God of nations, on the isles of Fiji,

Shores of golden sand and sunshine, happiness and song.

Stand united, we of Fiji, fame and glory ever,

Onward march together, God bless Fiji!

CHORUS

Anthem 2

God save our gracious Queen,

Long live our noble Queen,

God save the Queen!

Send her victorious,

Happy and Glorious,

Long to reign over us;

God save the Queen!

O Lord our God arise,

Scatter her enemies

And make them fall;

Confound their politics,

Frustrate their knavish tricks,

On Thee our hopes we fix,

Oh, save us all!

Thy choicest gifts in store

On her be pleased to pour;

Long may she reign;

May she defend our laws,

And ever give us cause

To sing with heart and voice,

God save the Queen!

argentinas anthem is the greatest......Oh juremos con gloria a morir, oh juremos con gloria a morir!!

Irelands Call is a great anthem...
but i love when i hear the Portuguese anthem by our rugby players, it is really unique.

When I listen to God Save The Queen I feel my brain slowly melting into a giant spectrum of death. Then I watch them play and I realise my death is a slow painful one lasting 80 minuites. (South Africa game) :vampire:

I like most EU anthems (England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Italy, Spain, France too) but "Flower of Scotland" is N°1 for me.
