Bastareaud assaulted in Wellington!

Damn these cowardly idiots! I honestly think they need to be put in a room and give the french 45 minutes beating them with french sticks, garlic cloves and allowing french roosters to peck where they may. All this whilst listening to Edith Piaf!

The remaing 15 mins would be for NZ tourism board officials to come in and attack them 5 on 1 with all manner of airport souvenirs!

It is a very sad incident. Hopefully he can move on from this as he is only 20 yrs old so to happen to someone this young can be damaging (not that older people are more/less vulnerable to it).

I glad they don't hold any grudges towards NZ as a whole because of the actions a some stupid idiots whom must have been molested as a child.

Hope he recovers quickly.

No, the Kiwi Burger isn't what you think it is. It's just a burger full of the things that New Zealanders love the most, I think. There's no actual kiwi bird in it.

The attack on Bastareaud is a disgrace, but to make out like those idiots are a fair representation on the New Zealand or Wellington public is ridiculous. That would be like me saying all Englishmen are football hooligans.[/b]

Ah, but here's the punchline; While 99% of football fans are decent people just out to watch the game, that 1% who cause trouble make the whole fraternity be branded. Personally I find the football fans attitude embarrassing (e.g. Songs like "10 german bombers"). I'm pleased that I can disassociate myself from it all.

Unless it's nipped in the bud, the same thing WILL happen to Kiwi rugby fans. After this alleged incident, the bottle throwing and the stories post-RWC 2007, the international media is already on a which hunt.

I don't think they beat him without any reason. He's a w*nker.

Yep sad news. But hey, **** happens. Not a big issue there I guess, he is a big boy. Reminds of me of the Chabal/Castrogiovanni altercation during the VI Nations.

Not a big issue? Clearly it was (well i'm guessing) some New Zealand fans. That kind of stuff does not have a place the the sport of rugby union, maybe in football, but definately not rugby.

I was merely pointing out that I'm not being 100% serious in my first post, but did state that I side with the French rugby team 100% on this issue. It is a serious subject yes, but in the thread which relates to the second test, I clearly outline my own outrage at these thugs and highlight the frustration other New Zealanders are experiencing at the disgusting behaviour of a minority of violent individuals.

I was more disappointed by the behaviour of some of the public during the first test than by this thuggery which can unfortunately happen in many different places and is not specific to NZ. After match parties can end like this especially with the alcohol consumed in a far from reasonable way.

Well said Don Billy. Great to see someone can put their point of view forward without exaggeration.

Yeah, as a Wellingtonian, I was really sadened by our behavior. Booing when the opposition kicks, throwing bottles after games and then beating a french player, makes NZ look pretty pathetic. I think it has to be emphasised that a majority of New Zealanders wern't properly represented on the two nights and I hope the french player recovers well.

The ironic thing is I think they thought they were doing the AB's a favour by this behavior, when in fact the AB's have stated they have a good relationship with most of the French players.

Bastareaud's conclusion (google translation):
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Returned this morning from New Zealand after the attack, Mathieu Bastareaud expressed his surprise at the extent of the fact. He said in the press release where he reassured about his condition and said would turn the page. "I come from New Zealand and I am surprised at the extent media following my incident. I was surprised to see so many journalists this morning at the airport. I have an incident that may occur anywhere and for anyone. Lack of chance for me. I do not want to complain because I want to move on quickly. Personally, I feel good. After radio and scanner, doctors have found nothing serious. I just put three stitches in the left cheekbone. Morale goes well, the page turns and now room for holidays! I was moved messages support I received and I thank all those people. "[/b]

And next time beaker instead of bottled beer...

Scene of Bastareaud bashing questioned

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
The attack on French rugby player Mathieu Bastareaud â€" which has caused much soul searching by politicians and rugby administrators â€" may not have happened on Wellington streets as claimed. The attack on Bastareaud had been reported as happening early on Sunday morning, when he was returning to his team's hotel after a night on the town after his side's loss to the All Blacks.

Bastareaud told police he was attacked from behind by five men, leaving him with a serious eye injury, but his recollection was patchy.

However, police had been given CCTV footage showing an uninjured Bastareaud walking into his hotel with two other players and two women, TV One reported.

Police planned to comment on the inquiry on Friday afternoon, Inspector Pete Cowan said.

Yesterday, police said they had identified two women who had accompanied three members of the French team back to the Holiday Inn hotel.

Holiday Inn general manager Heather Idoine-Riley said that the hotel was co-operating with police and would not comment further.

Bastareaud has returned to France to recover from his injuries.

Because Bastareaud could not identify his attackers, the French team had not made an official complaint.

Meanwhile, police have spoken to several women who were with French rugby players last weekend but have yet to speak to the two women they believe hold the key to the alleged assault case.

Inspector Pete Cowan, of Wellington Police, said several women had come forward following a police appeal for information earlier in the week.

They had been with players Saturday night and Sunday morning, in the wake of French team's 14-10 loss to the All Blacks at Westpac Stadium.

However, the two women who accompanied three members of the French team back to the Holiday Inn early Sunday morning have not been identified.

Police still want to hear from them.

''Several women have come forward and we've spoken to them which is great,'' said Mr Cowan.

''But the two women that we were trying to identify have not come forward.''

Mr Cowan again refused to say who the three French players were, or if Bastareaud, 20, was among them.
