Ban the haka ?

Not open for further replies.
Leave the hakas alone, they're a cool part of the game. I would actually love to Australia embrace an Aboriginal war dance.

Seriously?

It would mean nothing to the team apart from a couple of players. Everyone would feel stupid dancing around without understanding why and even if they did understand, there would be no emotional or historical connection.

National indigenous teams - yes.

And then yoe has the audacity to call me an idiot??!!

This has to be the most idiotic thread not started by SigeSige00!!

I think yoe is the only rugby fan who would want this... and based on the responses, its clear that everyone else are in disagreement with the Frenchy...

I love the Haka! I get goosebumps everytime I watch it. It's not only part of NZ or Maori or even the Pacific Islanders' culture, its part of world rugby culture!! It's synonymous with the AIG All Blacks. Taking it away will be like taking away the Wallaby from Australia, or frogs legs from France or bad teeth from the Dutch or Wal-mart from the US. It's something we relate to.

I actually miss the days when guys like Kobus Wiese and Bakkies Botha walked up to the AIG's and had a stare-down contest... It's on!! It's on like Donkey Kong!!

There are some commentators and the like who get all precious when teams do not stay still and reverential for the Haka, and it is annoying, I think we can all agree with that.

But ban the idiots, not the Haka. Surely that's an obvious one?

I Second this motion!

If there's anything they should ban, it's when countries take it in turns to do their war dance. As if tribes at war used to go, "Jolly good, our turn now."

Much better when they face each other off, doing it at the same time, getting closer and closer, cameras cutting from one group to the other.

Still think England should introduce morris dancing as their equivalent. I nominate this:

A combination of that and the chimney sweep dance from Mary Poppins. Nobody better to represent what the rest of the world thinks of our culture than the quintessentially English Dick Van Dyke. Ahem.

Since when is this a thing? I thought the English were the ones with supposedly bad teeth?

A little bit off topic, but:

Morris dancing isn't actually a war dance/challenge, it's a regular dance.
And it's not specifically English.

I don't think we have an equivalent, it's too cold.

Lol... Have you seen any Dutchmen with good teeth?

It's actually a family joke. Whenever we have family from the Netherlands visiting, we always joke that all of them have teeth that could eat an apple through a tennis racquet!

My Brother was in Amsterdam a month ago and he says all of them look like that...

I actually find the Haka far more hair raisingly emotional than the dross that is 'God Save the Queen', it just has far more raw emotion to it. If we're talking about responses to the Haka then this is the best IMO:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/GMMlYeBfb7A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Gets me every time. Also, please note Hape's face while on the receiving end of a Haka.

That's mainly because "God Save The Queen" is a **** anthem, I don't quite understand why we haven't implemented an English anthem yet.
There is plenty of support for one.

Insulted gratuitously again...don't some of you question your online behavior ? Would you say these things to me face to face if I simply stated what I felt and asked for the way you felt ? :p cowards.

And yes, since you set me up for it heineken, you're a right idiot. It's just like that, I dunno, bad genes+environmental influences...you just didn't turn out too bright is all...

I find a lot of, to say the least, fairly unintelligent replies here but won't go insulting anyone.
Here are my arguments:
we both get the anthem, no question here. But then they get an extra anthem, far more of an advantage psychologically. They get to parade their pompom routine, while we all have to just stand there and be subjected to it. And if we respond, we ACTUALLY GET FINED FOR IT. That would remind me of someone legally being allowed to put his ck in your mouth and if you say anything you get hit in the head and asked to hold still. It's perfectly ridiculous, and I'm pretty *amazed* nobody else agrees - BUT PLEAAAASE !!! Remain calm, this is but a discussion, remember  go hit a punching bag...I'm sure you have one.

So it's a war dance we're talking about here; they're reproducing a war routine where they stare you down with eyes wide open and cutthroat motions going on and UTTER YELLING - and, again, you just HAVE TO take it.
It delays the match, (though it doesn't disrupt the game's rhythm) and you HAVE TO STAND THERE AND WATCH. There's no choice, and the other team doesn't get to do anything (unless it's other Pac Isl...). It's a bit of a pre-Madonna act: reminds me of going to jam with your band, and the lead guitarist just...HAPPENS TO JUST *have this routine*, where he plays solos for 5minutes, and the whole band just stands there.....because that's exactly what it is through one aspect. It is.

So if you're fine with all that, because any of those reasons are sufficient:
it's a 'cultural thing' - it's not 'overwhelmingly reprehensible' - it's been going on forever and can't be banned now - is intense and adds to the folklore of the sport, esp. the mighty AB.
Good for you. Those aren't even close to sufficient for me, but since a vast, vast majority of ppl like the haka, obviously there's no reason to omit it. No problem.
I was just debating the theory behind it, not the applied reality of haka; i.e. how many ppl want it - I know there's a vast majority but that in itself isn't an argument, it's a stat.
I was looking for some intelligent arguments as to why we should keep it, and if it's all that obvious, I should've been inundated with good points, which I just simply haven't.

And please, at least *TRY* to keep it grown up, I understand it's hard for some of the kids on here, but this is a DISCUSSION, i.e. personal attacks just prove how low you are of a person. Attack my arguments, not me.

It's not that bad...

Funnily enough, the French anthem is the one I would play if I was about to go to war...

But Anthems are a different topic all together.

The Haka is a ritual of the AlG All Blacks, and of World Rugby.

LOL!!

Clearly you don't know the meaning of the Haka!!

It's an invitation to challenge the other team. To stand up to it, is to show you accept the challenge. MORON!!

you don't......................say.

True, I don't mean it's terrible generally, but it's not rousing at all.

Could you imagine if we used Zadok The Priest? lol

If you suggested to my face the Haka be banned I'd call you a moron to your face no problems at all.

Speaking of, I wonder to how many Maoris faces you have called the Haka a "pompom routine" and a "prima donna act". I bet its none, so don't get all high and mighty over that. The reason you haven't had many as you say intellegent replies is that its a subject that doesn't need debate, it doesn't need analyzing in any way. The Haka, as I said in my initial reply, is as key to rugby as the goddamn ball. Its part of the theater that comes with playing the All Blacks.

disagree with the whole thing...pretty much. I only apologize for spelling 'prima donna' wrong.
If we were kindly sitting down and I went like "you know, I just don't think the haka should be allowed" you'd stare at me meanly and go "YOU'RE A MORON !" ?? oh well...it's nice I don't know you. That's hardly a balanced state of mind you'd have there, friend ! ;)

Well I wouldn't say this to Maori ppl coz they'd probably hurt me physically, and I don't want that...but I still see it as just that. A pompom routine. Just like you wouldn't tell Manu Tuilagi you think he's an inarticulate, low intelligence character though you do think that, but that's neither here nor there and has nothing to do with the basic respect I'm asking for.

Do I come on an online forum for THIS ? Nope...I'm not 15 anymore.

Yeah. Jerusalem for me. Or the Imperial March. Ideally, the Imperial March for the UK, and Jerusalem for England.

I would reply more - but for all your huffing and puffing yoe and degrading all responses that don't fit with your own, there wouldn't seem much point. I will say you lack any knowledge of what the haka means and instead look at it through a primitivist scope more reminiscent to the colonial era. If teams didn't want to face the haka then they would not have to - it is an invitational practice.

Personally I could happily live with the All Blacks saving any and all haka's for special occasions as it has become a bit too routine for me, but I guess it would be an insult to say any test match wasn't important. If there was an overwhelming feeling the haka should be removed because players weren't sufficiently able to get excited (which looking at reactions to the haka from players certainly doesn't seem to be the case) - it should come from the players. Having played rugby for a school which had no haka, and never done the haka for my club, but facing the haka of others many times while standing still with my team mates - my own feelings are never resentment, its anticipation, excitement and wanting to tackle one of them harder than ever. I guess you should be on the recieving end of it before taking offense on behalf of others.

You always ask for respect and call others childish - but you can't seem to spot your own BS.
