No articles in English so far but Rugbyrama are generally right. Botha signed a 3 years contract with Toulon this morning, to start after the WC.

Booooooooo!
After USAP Toulon were my favourite Top14 team

Now I hate them.

My parents live just outside Perpignan so I'm locked to them :p
However I'm not a "USAP and anyone playing Toulon" fan :p

So at the moment they could already field a team of

15 Palisson
14 Sackey
13 Henson
12 Giteau
11 Wolf
10 Wilkinson
9 Mignoni
8 Van Nierkerk
7 Smith
6 Fernandez Lobbe
5 Botha
4 Schofield
3 Hayman
2 Bruno
1 Emmanuelli

and it's safe to say that they're nowhere near finished with their acquistions, whoever said money can't buy you happiness was a berk.

Mignoni is retiring end of the season, think they have signed Sébastien Tillous-Borde who is a scrum half and replace him.

So the first choice XV would probably contain 3, max 4 French players. Somehow that doesn't feel right and I would feel shortchanged if I were a Toulon supporter to some extent. I appreciate that they want as good a team as possible but this seems like overkill and I am of the opinion that it is bad for French rugby in the long run.

It is very bad for french rugby in the long run, but it is unavoidable for structural reasons.

Put it this way, there is not enough high level french players to fill up 14 rosters. It's as simple as that. What do you do when you've got ambitions and French high profile players don't want to come to your club? You get foreigners...

I think we're not very far from a Top 12, 3 years max.

Fair enough and I guess it isn't such a problem if the most teams do have mostly French players. In SA we can only manage 4/5 competitive teams so I guess I can understand your point.

a few changes, some of those players (Smith, Mignoni, Wulf, Henson, Sackey have left and they pick Kubriashvili over Hayman)

this will be their team for 2011/12 (note they are still trying to sign Bastareaud)

*during World Cup period

in my opinion it's weaker than last season due to the departure of George Smith

If Toulon do get Bastareaud's signature it'll be interesting to see who out of him and Giteau will get the 12 shirt
I reckon it should go to Bastareaud, but after shelling out the big bucks on Giteau you wouldn't just want him on the bench (if that)

Has Bastareaud said he wants to play 12? In Paris and for France he has always played 13, but for the Baabaas he played 12, and in a "southern" style tem he should play 12 too... Perhaps Giteau at 9? Or he would refuse?

Ah, I thought Bastareaud was in inside, not outside for some reason
That settles it then :p

I doubt he would want to play 9. Not sure how he compares to Bastareaud, Toulon should probably give them both a few runs inside Wilkinson in the pre season to see who fits in better.
